Thunderstorm Wind. A strong thunderstorm produced wind gusts strong enough to down several trees, with several photos from the public showing trees snapped at the trunks, powerlines either toppled or snapped at the base, and damage to residential fencing from a snapped tree. Another public report also indicated that a tree had fallen onto a home in the area.

A major severe weather event by Pacific Northwest standards occurred over central and northeast Oregon and southeast Washington on May 30th. A powerful upper level storm system moved across the area during the afternoon and evening helping to trigger severe thunderstorms. The airmass was unusually unstable for this area of the country with surface dewpoints well into the 60s. With strong upper level winds in place the stage was set for numerous fast moving intense storms through the afternoon and early evening. Numerous reports of large hail and damaging winds were received with most of the hail falling in central Oregon. There were multiple reports of significant hail (2 inch in diameter) and winds in excess of 75 mph. Winds were estimated as high as 115 mph in Wasco County, OR.

A powerful upper storm system combined with modest low and mid level moisture to yield scattered strong to severe storms and flash flooding. Storms developed first across the higher terrain of central Oregon nearer the Cascades and adjacent Ochoco mountains. Storms then built northward with hail and damaging winds along the way.

Lightning. Lightning hit a main electrical transmission line at the Pilot Butte substation and knocked out power to 31,500 people until power was restored at 6:08 PM PST.

Dust Devil. A strong dust devil blew a piece of metal roofing into power lines at a local furniture store. The dust devil tore through Umatilla Park and Sports Complex, destroying five baseball dugouts. Sagebrush and papers were reported to the height of power poles, and power was locally lost for three hours.
