Orangeburg Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
A strong, long-track tornado began just south of the town of Elko in Barnwell Co SC where it was rated as EF-1, then moved in a general northeast direction through Orangeburg Co SC, where it reached EF-3 intensity and caused 2 fatalities and 7 injuries. The tornado dissipated shortly after crossing into Calhoun Co SC southwest of St. Matthews before reaching I-26. ||The tornado downed numerous trees along its path. It crossed Norway Rd where it snapped multiple power poles. As the tornado reached Fire Tower Rd west of Neeses, it intensified further, destroying 3 anchored manufactured homes on Preserver Rd near Ninety Six Rd. It was in this area that the 2 known fatalities occurred to residents in a double-wide manufactured home. ||The tornado then turned more eastward, crossing Savannah Hwy (US Hwy 321) and Dragstrip Rd north of Livingston. There were several homes or manufactured homes that were heavily damaged or destroyed in this area. The tornado gradually weakened as it crossed North Rd (US Hwy 178) and crossed into Calhoun Co.
Approximately 25 trees were downed across the county, including in the areas of Santee, Bowman, and Eutawville, and vicinity. Two structures were damaged. A pine tree fell on a roof in Holly Hill causing minor damage and a roof was blown off a single-wide trailer in Eutawville. Around 1500 power outages were reported.
A thunderstorm downburst with straight-line winds occurred just northeast to east of the Town of Cordova. Strong winds uprooted and snapped several trees. Multiple trees were down on Cordova Rd between Cherry Hill Rd and Rivelon Rd. On Cannon Bridge Road, a canopy and sign at a convenience store were snapped from their mounts, blown a short distance and completely demolished. Roof damage to several structures was also observed. Power poles were leaning and power lines carried down by wind in the area.
A thunderstorm downburst with straight-line winds produced extensive damage on the north side of the city of Orangeburg. Tree damage was first observed near Lake Edisto Rd, continuing in a wide path east to east-southeast across North Rd, across |Columbia Rd and ending east of US Hwy 601 south of the Regional Medical Center. Numerous uprooted, snapped and toppled trees were evident, with many structures exhibiting structural and roof damage caused by high wind, downed trees and large downed tree limbs. Several power lines were also down from falling trees|and tree limbs.
Episodes
An upper level shortwave combined with a surface cold front and moderate instability produced multicellular thunderstorm clusters in eastern SC which led to damaging winds and large hail. An NWS survey team concluded that a macroburst occurred in central and eastern Orangeburg County which lead to widespread downed trees and powerlines and included significant damage to Lake Marion High School in Santee, SC.
An isolated severe storm took down some trees and powerlines causing some power outages.
Isolated storms produced some wind damage over portions of the lower and southeast Midlands taking down some trees and powerlines. Hail up to nickel size was also reported.
