Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Potter County

Winter Storm. A mix of snow and freezing rain resulted in significant winter weather impacts during the pre-Thanksgiving holiday travel. These included multiple vehicle accidents, road closures, downed trees/wires and power outages. Snow started around 1000 EST with accumulations by late afternoon on the 26th between 2 and 4 inches. Snow continued into the early evening before changing to a period of freezing rain for several hours prior to midnight. The freezing rain eventually changed back to snow with additional lake effect snows into the 27th.

November 26, 2013

High Wind. High winds knocked down numerous trees and utility wires, causing thousands of power outages county-wide. Numerous roads were also closed due to falling trees and wires.

October 29, 2012

Thunderstorm Wind. Thunderstorm winds estimated near 60 mph knocked down trees and utility wires in Shinglehouse. The downed trees and wires knocked out power.

November 14, 2011

Tornado. NWS meteorologists confirmed an EF1 tornado approximately 2 miles west-southwest of Galeton, PA in Potter County. The tornado was on the ground for about 2 minutes and had a path length of just over 1 mile. The estimated maximum wind speed was 90 mph based on tree and utility pole damage indicators. The damage occurred in a very rural area with only minor structural damage to a few cabins. The tornado path was slightly curved and extended from a small tributary on the West Branch of Pine Creek across SR 2002. The EF1 tornado destroyed over 1000 trees and up to 10 utility poles along SR 2002. A pump-house that supplies the town of Galeton with water was impacted by power outages resulting from the downed utility poles.

July 24, 2010

Winter Storm. Three to six inches of heavy wet snow caused extensive damage countywide related to leaf-laden trees and limbs falling on power lines. Upwards of six to eight inches of snow fell across the highest elevations.
