An early-season heavy snowfall adversely affected the higher elevations of east-central and northeastern Pennsylvania, causing road closures, power outages and early dismissals from local school districts. Snowfall amounts ranged from seven inches in Sullivan County to over a foot further north and east in the Pocono mountains. However, the snowfall was very elevation dependent with little to no accumulation in the valleys. ||Numerous motor vehicle accidents were reported in Sullivan County, although none were serious according to state police in Laporte. Sections of U.S. Route 220 were temporarily closed due to a jackknifed tractor trailer and other trucks that were stuck in the snow. Other roads in the Lopez area were also briefly shut down. ||The accumulation of the heavy, wet snow on power lines and trees resulted in approximately 1,200 Penelec customers to be without power at the height of the storm. Schools were dismissed early due to the loss of power and deteriorating road conditions.
