Episodes
Warming temperatures and periods of sunshine on the afternoon of May 3rd aided in shower and thunderstorm development ahead of a cold front. Strong to severe storms passed through northern West Virginia that evening, with damaging wind gusts causing numerous downed trees and power lines across the area.
In the wake of a strong cold front, associated with a strengthening low pressure system, wind gusts of 45 to 60 mph were widespread. A gust to 55 mph was measured at the airport near Buckhannon in Upshur County. Damage was mostly from fallen tree branches, such as power outages and houses struck. In Marlinton of Pocahontas County, the wind did blow a portion of the elementary school roof off. Yet, there were no injuries. A business in Cowen of Webster County also had some roof damage.
A large cluster of thunderstorms formed along a strong east to west frontal boundary in Ohio. The storms then dropped southeast into West Virginia during this Friday evening. Fallen trees and large branches caused widespread power outages.
