A trough of low pressure ahead of a cold front led to the development of several clusters of showers and thunderstorms. Some of these thunderstorms became severe producing damaging winds and even a tornado in Warren County. A 53 mph wind gust was measured at the Morristown Municipal Airport. Several thousand were left without power, mainly in Morris and Warren Counties.

December 9, 2014

A wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain occurred at the onset of precipitation associated with a strong nor'easter during the morning of the 9th. Ice accumulations averaged one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch with the highest amounts over the higher terrain. Untreated roadways and walkways were hazardous. Icy conditions were reported throughout most of Sussex and Warren Counties as well as parts of western Morris County and northern Hunterdon County. Schools in Hackettstown (Warren County) had delayed openings. Isolated power outages were reported in Sussex County.||In northwest New Jersey, precipitation started briefly as sleet from south to north between 3 a.m. EST and 5 a.m. EST on the 9th. Precipitation then changed to freezing rain quickly within the hour of onset and then changed to plain rain between 6 a.m. EST and 8 a.m. EST on the 9th.||Ice accumulations included .25 inches in Milford (Hunterdon County) and Allamuchy (Warren County), .15 inches in Hopatcong (Sussex County) and Mount Olive (Morris County) and .10 inch in Andover (Sussex County) and Fredon (Sussex County). ||The cold air, especially near the surface, was supplied by a high pressure system that moved across the southern tier of Canada and reached the Canadian Maritimes overnight on the 8th. Meanwhile, a low pressure system formed off the Carolina coastal waters on the 8th. It tracked northward and deepened as it reached the Delmarva coastal waters at 7 a.m. EST on the 9th. The low pressure system deepened 12 millibars in six hours and was off the New Jersey coastal waters at 1 p.m. EST on the 9th. The track and rapid intensification helped bring warmer air near the surface into northwest New Jersey and changed precipitation to plain rain. The low pressure system stopped intensifying and drifted off to the northeast reaching the Rhode Island coastal waters during the evening of the 9th and eastern Massachusetts around Midnight EST on the 10th.

Approximately 5,500 customers in Mine Hill Township, Roxbury Township, and nearby areas lost power as a result of the thunderstorms during the evening of the 7th. What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
