Parsons Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Tri City Airport near Parsons measured a wind gust of 67 mph. Power poles and trees were down across Highway 59 near Altamont. They have had both cars and tractor-trailers blown off the road.
Dispatch reports US Highway 59 was closed due to zero visibility from dust and smoke between Altamont and Parsons. Winds were in excess of 70 mph. Dirt from a recently plowed field was picked up and lofted with these strong winds. Additional debris was blown across the road with trees down and a power pole also down across the road. They have had both cars and tractor-trailers blown off the road. No injuries were reported.
A few reports of power lines being blown down.
Freezing rain began to accumulate on trees and power lines.

Episodes
A line of thunderstorms moved across far southeastern KS producing damaging high winds. Most of the damage was limited to trees and power lines.
An arctic high pressure was moving south into the Midwest the morning of December 9th which undercut warm moist conditions aloft. This setup resulted in in a prolonged period, roughly 24 hours, of freezing rain and sleet. The hardest hit areas were Montgomery and Labette Counties where at least half an inch to one inch of ice accumulated. This resulted in numerous locations losing power.
A powerful upper level disturbance and associated cold front approaching from the northwest spawned strong to severe thunderstorms in the form of a squall line across portions of Southeast Kansas during the afternoon and early evening hours of September 30th.
