During the morning hours of Wednesday, July 11th, a strong cold front swept across northern New Jersey. As this front clashed with moist and unstable air already in place, a line of strong to severe thunderstorms rapidly moved east-southeast across portions of northeast New Jersey. The line attained a "bow-echo" structure, which produced a swath of damaging winds and small hail across portions of Passaic and Bergen Counties in New Jersey. What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);

  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
