Power Outage in Patrick Springs, VA

Wind gusts downed trees and power lines throughout the county. Some secondary roads, including Pleasant View Road, were blocked by trees for a period of time. Periodic wind gusts to over 35 mph were reported into the early morning hours of April 2. Damage values are estimated.

Skywarn-trained weather spotters and members of the general public observed ice accumulations ranging from 0.25 to 0.34 inches in thickness across portions of Patrick County, including around the communities of Buffalo Ridge and Sanville. Modest sleet accumulations of up to 0.1 inches were also observed in spots across the county. The icing resulted in over 1,343 power outages. Numerous trees and tree limbs were also brought down by the weight of the icing. Key impacts: power outages; hazardous to impossible travel conditions; widespread tree damage.

One tree and a large limb were blown down by thunderstorm winds along Moorefield Store Road. The fallen tree severed a nearby power line.

Snowfall amounts across the county include 4.0 inches four miles south-southwest of Critz and four miles east-southeast of Buffalo Ridge, 5.0 inches four miles southeast of Stuart, 6.0 inches three miles north of Collinstown, 7.0 inches four miles northwest of Sanville, and 8.0 inches one mile south of Charity and four miles northwest of Ararat. Approximately 1900 electric customers lost power.

Snowfall amounts between 7 to 6 inches were observed across several locations in the county. The highest accumulation was in the Meadows of Dan area where 5.5 inches was measured. Significant freezing rain reports of a quarter inch of ice or greater were also received with the highest amount being four tenths of an inch of ice near Buffalo Ridge. Moderate post frontal winds caused multiple ice covered power lines to fall. Appalachian Power reported as of 10:45 Tuesday morning that 1,500 customers were without power in the county.

Strong northwest winds behind a strengthening coastal low brought down multiple trees across the county and left around 800 people without power.

Moderate to heavy snow moved into the county during the early morning hours on the 5th. The snow turned to a mixture of rain, freezing rain, and sleet during the afternoon, before ending as snow late at night into the day on the 6th. Snowfall accumulations of 7 to 12 inches were reported across the county. Ice accumulations of 0.25 inches also occurred in Stuart. Roadways became slick, with many reports of vehicles sliding off roads across the state. Approximately 7500 people were without power across the county for a period of time over the weekend.

Heavy icing and substantial tree damage was reported near Meadows of Dan with up to 3/4 inch on trees and power lines. There were scattered power outages.

Numerous trees were blown down countywide, along with many powerlines being down as a result of either the wind or trees falling on them. Some of these downed lines started brush fires. In Patrick Springs, one-third of a roof was blown off a home, a carport was blown 500 yards, and a downed tree fell and destroyed a parked car. In Stuart, a marquis sign fell on a car of a car dealership. At one point, 6500 electric customers were without power.
