Strong low pressure moving from the southern plains through eastern Wisconsin brought copious amounts of precipitation to northeastern Minnesota December 30th and 31st. A warm surge of deep tropical moisture preceded the storm, and brought rainfall totals that exceeded 1 inch in places. Freezing rain accumulated to a quarter to a half inch in some places in the interior Arrowhead region. The Babbitt area had up to a half inch of ice accumulation, which downed trees and power lines. The rain changed over to snow during the evening of the 31st as cold air wrapped around the backside of the system. The heaviest snow occured in a 20 to 30 mile wide band from northwestern Pine County, northeast to east central St Louis County around the Babbitt area. Over 6 inches of snow occured in these areas. Specific snowfall amounts include 10 inches in Babbitt, 8.5 inches near Tamarack, and 7 to 7.5 inches at Embarrass, Floodwood, and Bruno.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
