Events
Top wind gust reports included 55 MPH at Allegheny County Airport, 53 MPH at a PADOT sensor on I-79 at Steubenville, and 52 MPH at Pittsburgh International Airport. One person was hospitalized when a tree fell on a car on the 800 block of North Lincoln Avenue in North Shore. Another car was damaged by a tree on 5th Avenue in East Mckeesport, with no injuries. Roof damage occurred to an apartment complex at Mount Lebanon, and siding was damaged on homes in Bon Meade. Several other reports of downed trees were received, including a report of one to two dozen downed in Stoop Ferry, which caught fire when a power pole was also involved.
High wind gusts accompanied a strong low pressure system on December 23rd and continue into December 24th. Measured wind gusts across western PA ranged between 40 to 50mph, sustain winds exceed 30mph. Isolated power outages occurred. A 59mph wind gust was measured near Bellefield, PA in Allegheny County. Episodes
Low pressure tracked from the Lower Mississippi Valley on the morning of the 3rd towards the northeast U.S. coast on the morning of the 4th. Ahead of the low, ideal conditions for enhanced downslope wind existed along west-facing slopes of Indiana, Westmoreland and Fayette Counties, as strong southeast flow underneath an inversion at ridgetop accelerated as it progressed downslope, creating many measured wind gusts of 50 to 60 MPH on the 3rd. Localized 70 MPH wind, although not measured, likely occurred as well. Damage was most concentrated along the west-facing slopes of Fayette and Westmoreland, with many reports of tree and structural damage. Power outages were also widespread, with over 28% of Fayette County out at one point during the event. A Declaration of Disaster Emergency was issued for the county in the wake of the wind at noon on the 4th, with the city of Connellsville also issuing a local declaration.||Incidents of wind damage were more isolated in other portions of southwest Pennsylvania, as wind gusts were slightly less severe, generally topping out at around 50 MPH.
A low pressure system rapidly intensified December 22nd to December 23rd as the center of the low moved from the Midwest across the Great Lakes. A flash freeze, strong wind gusts, and dangerously cold temperatures were recorded across the region. Record low maximum temperatures were broken at several climate sites. Widespread power outages were noted by utility companies, isolated areas experienced internal damage from frozen pipes, and hazardous travel was noted due to a flash freeze (rain quickly changed to snow) with rapidly dropping temperatures.
A few rounds of thunderstorms on July 24th and 25th preceded a cold frontal passage. High levels of instability, ample shear, and pre-frontal disturbances provided thunderstorm clusters producing widespread damaging wind gusts. Many instances of tree and power line damage were noted, along with isolated instances of structural damage. One of those instances of structural damage, a tree falling on to two trailers in Venango County, unfortunately led to the death of a 28 year old woman. Flash flooding of urbanized areas of Allegheny County also occurred.
A more widespread wind damage event finally occurred on July 23rd. A quasi-linear mesoscale convective system, originating over Illinois and Indiana, continued into a warm, moist, and unstable air mass over the Upper Ohio Valley. The line of storms crossed western Pennsylvania during the early to middle afternoon hours, with widespread wind damage to trees and power lines resulting. Several reports of large hail, up to half-dollar size, were received as well.
Two waves of severe storms entered the Ohio River Valley on July 13th. The first, was in the early morning hours. Despite the lack of day time heating, instability was available due to warm, moist advection under southwest flow. Vertical wind shear was also available as a trough approached an area of high pressure and a created a pressure gradient.||During the afternoon, warm and unstable conditions prevailed; dew points stayed in the lower 70s. Mean-layer CAPE of 1500-2000 J/kg was able to develop. Due to a gradient between upper high pressure off the east coast and a shortwave trough moving northeast through the Ohio Valley, moderate mid-level flow characterized by 30-40 knots of 0-6km shear prevailed. This allowed storms to organize into multicellular storm clusters and short line segments. Many wind damage reports were received, mainly to trees and power lines, although a few reports of structural damage were also noted.

What Causes Power Outages?
- Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.
What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
- Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
- Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
- Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
