A newspaper reported that thunderstorm winds downed a large tree limb and power wires onto a car on Route 199 in the town of Milan. The driver of the vehicle, who was uninjured, was trapped in the car for over an hour. As a result of the fallen wires, 1200 people lost power.

A 1500-2000 foot section of damage occurred along State Route 44 in the Town of Pleasant Valley between the Taconic State Parkway and Route 82 due to thunderstorm winds. In addition to numerous trees, wires and utility poles knocked over, thunderstorm winds also damaged a flat roof to a gas station convenience store. The Dutchess County 911 Center reached 175 calls about damage from this area. Local dispatchers made calls notifying highway departments, power companies, utility companies, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (due to a transformer oil spill) and building inspectors.

Several trees and power lines were reported down in Fishkill due to strong thunderstorm winds.

A cluster of showers and thunderstorms resulted in downed trees and powerlines, a couple of hail reports, and a flood report over eastern New York during the afternoon hours on September 19, 2022.

A supercell thunderstorm resulted in multiple severe wind damage reports over Ulster and Dutchess Counties during the evening of Wednesday July 13, 2022. Additionally, the supercell resulted in a tornado and macroburst in Ulster County near Kingston, NY. The Mayor announced a Local State of Emergency (restricting all un-necessary travel in and around Kingston) after thunderstorms produced extensive tree damage in the area. At one point, over 6,000 residents were without power in the city of Kingston.

A line of showers and embedded thunderstorms progressed across eastern New York ahead of a cold front during the late-afternoon and evening hours on Thursday, December 2, 2021. Gusty winds accompanied the front and showers with widespread gusts of 30 to 45 mph. A few stronger wind gusts to around 50 mph occurred across Ulster and Dutchess counties which resulted in some downed trees/tree limbs as well as a few power lines, resulting in a few road closures. ||There were also widespread reports of pea-sized hail with this event across much of eastern New York. ||Winds continued to gust 30 to 45 mph throughout the night which resulted in additional damage in Ulster County. Around 4500 customers in Ulster County lost power at some point.

The remnants of Tropical Cyclone Ida resulted in widespread flash flooding over Ulster and Dutchess Counties during the late evening of September 1 where 3 to 7 inches of rain fell. The southern half of Dutchess County was hit hardest, where 35 roads were damaged or closed and at least one bridge washed out. The County Executive declared a state of emergency and restricted non-essential travel for several towns in southern Dutchess. Metro North rail service was shut down due to the flooding, and up to 2,000 customers lost power. A federal major disaster was declared for Dutchess County, which reported $2.5 million in damages to public assets and municipal facilities, along with an estimated $1 million in damages to private homes, apartments, and businesses.

Amid a hot and humid air mass, scattered showers and thunderstorms passed across portions of eastern New York, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. The strongest thunderstorms occurred across Ulster and Dutchess counties where some damaging wind gusts resulted in downed trees and power lines.

Strong to severe thunderstorms developed during the afternoon hours of Tuesday, July 6th, 2021, as an upper level disturbance tracked through the region. Several downed trees and wires resulted from the strongest storms. More than 35,000 customers lost power.||Additionally, heat indices across the Mid-Hudson valley and southern Taconics exceeded 95 degrees during the afternoon hours.

A couple of rounds of thunderstorms occurred during the afternoon and evening of the 30th across eastern New York. Scattered reports of wind damage occurred with the strongest storms. Microbursts were confirmed in Wappingers Falls and Canaan, where estimated winds of 75 to 85 miles per hour downed numerous trees in a localized area. The storms knocked out power to more than 4,000 customers in the Mid-Hudson Valley, and also delayed travel on the Metro North's Hudson line due to trees falling on the tracks.

A dynamic storm system brought a variety of weather to eastern New York on Wednesday, April 21st, 2021, including a tornado, severe thunderstorms and high elevation snow. An EF-1 tornado briefly touched down in Amenia, NY (Dutchess County), causing damage to several houses and ripping off the roof of a restaurant. Additional reports of downed trees and power lines were reported south of the Capital District. North of the Capital District, there was light accumulations of snowfall, ranging from a tenth of an inch up to 4 inches in Hamilton County.||Key Impacts: damage to trees and power lines, power outages, structural damage, road closures.

Severe thunderstorms developed along a warm front during the afternoon of the 27th. Two of these storms became quite intense as they tracked from the northern Catskills through the Mid-Hudson Valley and into the Taconics. These storms spawned a brief tornado in a forested area in Greene County, and produced more widespread wind damage in the Amenia, Dover Plains, and Millbrook regions of Dutchess County with numerous downed trees. One fatality occurred in East Fishkill as a tree was downed onto a moving vehicle. More than 4,000 people in Dutchess County and 2,000 people in Ulster County lost power as a result of the storms. The storms also produced a couple of reports of hail up to half dollar size.

Two separate broken lines of strong to severe thunderstorms developed during the afternoon of July 6th over eastern New York ahead of a cold front and prefrontal trough. The storms resulted in isolated reports of wind damage. The damage was mainly to trees, but there was also a metal shed destroyed. Nearly 6,000 customers lost power in Ulster and Dutchess Counties.

A cold front crossed eastern New York on the 6th, bringing and end to a four-day heat wave. This front sparked a broken line of thunderstorms as it interacted with the hot and humid airmass. Some of these storms became severe, resulting in scattered reports of wind damage. Around 5500 customers lost power in Columbia and Dutchess Counties due to the storms.

A cold front moved into a warm and humid airmass on August 18th, sparking a line of showers and thunderstorms. These storms produced heavy rainfall, resulting in a report of flash flooding. Gusty winds with a thunderstorm resulted in a report of tree and powerline damage as well.

Severe thunderstorms impacted portions of the eastern Catskills, Mid-Hudson Valley, and Taconics during the afternoon of May 15th. Several supercell thunderstorms developed, with the lead storm resulting in a EF1 tornado near Saugerties and a swath of hail of two inches diameter and greater. Later in the afternoon, an intense thunderstorm with winds up to 105 mph resulted in a widespread area of wind damage along the I-84 corridor in southern Dutchess County. ||Over 35,000 customers in Dutchess and Ulster Counties lost power as a result of the storms. Travel restrictions were issued for southern Dutchess County due to downed trees and malfunctioning traffic lights, and Amtrak and Metro North rail service was suspended in the county. The governor deployed 125 members of the National Guard to aid storm recovery efforts.

A cold front crossed through the area during the afternoon and evening hours on Tuesday, June 13th. With a warm and humid air mass ahead of the front, some showers and thunderstorms developed across the area. A few of the storms became severe in Dutchess and Columbia counties, mainly producing damage to trees and power lines.

A very warm and humid air mass was in place over eastern New York on Friday, August 12th. Daytime temperatures were well into the 90s and dewpoints reached into the low to mid 70s. As a result, heat index values reached 100 to 105 degrees for valley areas. Some cooling centers were opened across parts of the region as a result of the excessive heat.||With the warm and humid air mass in place, scattered thunderstorms developed during the afternoon hours. Although these thunderstorms had little upper level support, a few of the storms became severe, producing damaging wind gusts to trees and power lines. In addition, one of the thunderstorms produced a cloud to ground lightning strike, which struck a group of five people under a tree in a park in Poughkeepsie. Two of the people died as a result of their injuries.

A warm and muggy air mass was in place over eastern New York on Monday, July 25th. Ahead of an approaching cold front, a line of thunderstorms developed across central New York and moved towards eastern New York during the early afternoon hours. Some of these thunderstorms became severe, producing damaging winds across parts of southern Dutchess County. Around 800 customers lost power in Dutchess County as a result of the thunderstorms. ||The thunderstorms headed eastward into Connecticut by the mid-afternoon. Some additional thunderstorms occurred during the late afternoon and early evening hours as the cold front crossed the area, but no more severe storms occurred for the remainder of the day.

A strong area of low pressure was located over the Ohio Valley on Wednesday, February 24th and the storm headed northeast towards the region. A warm front extended out of this storm, allowing for periods of rainfall during the day Wednesday, February 24th and into the evening hours. As the warm front passed through the region during the overnight hours, temperatures became quite mild for late February reaching into the 50s and 60s, despite it being in the middle of the night. In addition, thunderstorms ahead of the storm's cold front moved from the mid-Atlantic states up towards eastern upstate New York.||The thunderstorms produced a period of very heavy rainfall during the late evening and into the overnight hours. Rainfall fell at rates exceeding one inch per hour at times. This rainfall, combined with a frozen ground in places and some snow melt in mountainous areas, allowed for widespread flooding of urban, poor drainage and low lying areas. Some streams and rivers exceeded flood stages as well, but most flooding was only minor.||In addition, one of the thunderstorm became severe over the mid-Hudson Valley, producing damaging wind gusts. Wind gusts damaged a shed in a store parking lot and produced scattered power outages across parts of Dutchess County. Around 3,000 customers in Dutchess County were without power at one point during the overnight hours.||The passage of the storm's cold front during the early morning hours of Thursday, February 25th ended the threat for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Some additional rainfall during the day on Thursday, February 25th allowed the receding of water of flooded areas to be slow to occur.

A very warm and humid air mass was in place over the region on Tuesday, July 8th. The region was ahead of a strong cold front that was moving eastward from the Great Lakes Region. Aided by a strong jet streak aloft and a potent upper level shortwave trough, the cold front triggered a line of thunderstorms that produced damaging winds across western and central New York.||The line of thunderstorms reached eastern New York during the evening hours. It continued to produce strong winds, which caused damage across the Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley and eventually into the Saratoga area, Capital Region and Hudson Valley as well. Many trees and power lines were downed across Herkimer County. In addition, a weak, brief tornado also occurred in the southeastern Adirondacks in North Creek. The line of thunderstorms moved eastward and weakened as they reached the border with New England by the late evening hours. As a result, the threat for severe weather ended.

A powerful storm system moved from the Great Lakes region towards southern Canada on the early morning of Friday, November 1st. As the storm's cold front moved across the region during the morning hours, a line of convective heavy rain showers and embedded thunderstorms and gusty winds accompained the boundary. Although the extent of thunder was rather limited, the line produced damaging winds to trees and power lines across portions of Dutchess County. Utility compaines reported over 2600 power outages across Dutchess County as a result of the line of showers and embedded thunderstorms.

A warm and humid air mass was in place across eastern New York on Monday, September 2nd, Labor Day. A southerly flow ahead of an approaching cold front brought plenty of moisture into the region from the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. This persistent southerly flow caused some showers and thunderstorms to develop over the region during the afternoon hours. Some of these thunderstorms tracked over the same area, resulting in heavy rainfall in a short period of time across Dutchess County. This caused flash flooding to occur in the Hyde Park area.||As the cold front approached by the late afternoon hours, the showers and thunderstorms organized into a squall line across the western Mohawk Valley. Hail and damaging winds occurred across several locations in southern Herkimer County. At one point, up to 2,000 customers were without power in Herkimer County as a result of thunderstorms. As the line of thunderstorms tracked eastward into the evening hours, they began to weaken, and the threat for severe weather ended.

An upper level disturbance was approaching the region from the Midwest. At the same time, a stalled surface boundary remained just to the south of the region across the northern Mid-Atlantic states. Dewpoints were quite high across the area, with ample low-level moisture. Despite limited wind shear and instability aloft, one thunderstorm became severe, with damaging wind gusts. In addition, cloud to ground lightning and heavy rainfall impacted portions of the Mid-Hudson Valley. Local media reported about 3,560 people without power across Ulster and Dutchess Counties as a result of the thunderstorms.

A storm system moved from the Great Lakes and into the Northeastern United States. The storm's warm front was draped across the region. As skies cleared out in the late morning hours, the atmosphere became increasingly unstable. Warm and moist air set the stage for the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms. With lots of wind shear present, there was the potential for damaging wind gusts and even tornadoes as well. ||A strong squall line develop across western New York and western Pennsylvania and moved eastward, producing significant damage along its path. As the line of storms reached eastern New York, it clipped portions of Ulster and Dutchess counties, producing widespread wind damage during the evening hours. Media reported that 8,400 customers lost power in Dutchess County alone. The line quickly advanced eastward into New England, ending the threat for severe weather.

On June 6, A stationary front was oriented north to south through central New York and curved eastward south of Long Island. An unstable air mass was over eastern New York.An upper-level short wave trough approached from the Great Lakes. Thunderstorms developed in lineoriented north to south across eastern New York around noon. Several severe thunderstorms weresevere and widespread wind damage occurred, and a few reports of hail up to an inch were received.Thirty-four thousand people were without power in the northern Saratoga and southern Warren County region.

On June 9th, a cold front passed through New York State, touching off another series of strong to locally severe thunderstorms that brought some damage to 14 of the 19 counties in Albany's area of responsibility, including interior New York and adjacent western New England. The damage was namely to trees and power lines being knocked down, which disrupted electrical service to several thousands of people for brief periods of time. In addition, homes in Fulton and Saratoga Counties sustained structural damage when wind gusts estimated to be in excess of 60 miles per hour blew off a roof and a chimney, respectively. Greene County also saw one injury on the evening of the 9th, when a tree fell on a mobile home. The most concentrated damage took place in Columbia County as a downburst produced widespread tree damage in the town of Ghent. Several other towns in that county reported scattered damage from the wind.

A strong cold front produced a line of showers and thunderstorms across eastern New York on the morning of September 23. One of the cells became severe as it moved into Dutchess County. Strong winds from the storm knocked trees and powerlines down at the intersection of Route 55 and Route 82 in the town of Billings. A funnel cloud was reported by a Law Enforcement Officer in the town of La Grange. Heavy rains resulted in flash flooding in the town of New Paltz in Ulster County. Route 32 flooded in that town submerging a taxi at the intersection of Route 32 and Sunset Ridge Road. The driver was not injured. By 4 pm, city firefighters in New Paltz had assisted in pumping 18 flooded basements out. The storms resulted in scattered power outages.

A cold front, slipping south from eastern Canada, touched off scattered thunderstorms across the Mid Hudson Valley during the afternoon of August 16. One of the storms became briefly severe as it migrated across southern Columbia County and northern Dutchess County. In Columbia County, winds from this storm knocked down trees in the towns of Ghent, Germantown and Clermont. The Town of Tivoli in Dutchess County reported large branches down as well as small hail. Lightning from another storm in Ulster County struck a power line in the town of Ulster. The result of this strike was a fire in nearby bushes. Police had to close U.S. Route 9W near Grant Avenue for about two hours to gain control of the fire. No one was injured by this lightning strike or resultant fire.

Isolated thunderstorms developed during the evening hours of August 10 over Dutchess and Ulster counties. These storms were slow moving and prolific rainmakers. Flash flooding took place in the towns of Hyde Park and Pleasant Valley as well as the city of Poughkeepsie, all in Dutchess County. In Hyde Park, Dorsett Road flooded. Quaker road flooded in Pleasant Valley. In Poughkeepsie, U.S. Route 44 and State Highway 55 were flooded as was US Route 9 near Marist College. Heavy rains flooded Route 299 in Libertyville near New Paltz in Ulster County. Both roads were closed. Numerous basements were also flooded in that town. Lightning strikes also brought down power lines between Hyde Park and Poughkeepsie. At one point, the entire city of Poughkeepsie was reported to have no power.

A line of thunderstorms developed in an unstable, humid air mass, during the afternoon of June 26 across southeastern New York. Two of the cells became briefly severe. Thunderstorm winds knocked down trees in many locations of Ulster County. Trees and powerlines were also blown down in the towns of Tivoli and Wappingers Falls, Dutchess County. As many as 2,000 lightning strikes were reported in one hour and resulted in as many as 16,500 customers without power in the Mid Hudson Valley.

A line of showers and thunderstorms developed ahead of a cold front, during the midday hours on April 19th. This line became better organized as it moved into the Mid Hudson Valley, where a few thunderstorms became strong to locally severe. Strong winds from thunderstorms downed trees and powerlines in the following places - Athens, Greene County , Saugerties, Ulster County. In Dutchess County, several large trees and some powerlines down were reported in the towns of Northeast and Millerton.

A strong back door cold front worked across the Mid Hudson Valley during the afternoon hours of June 11. The air mass ahead of this boundary was hot, humid and unstable. A strong upper level disturbance propagated along the front and set the stage for the second severe weather event to hit this area in two weeks. Numerous thunderstorm cells, some of which became severe, erupted in the Mid Hudson Valley. A thunderstorm deposited dime size hail at Pine Plains in Dutchess county and produced wind damage at Stanfordville. Another storm produced wind gusts to 82 mph at the Dutchess County Airport where there was a balloon festival going on at the time. The wind blew tables, tents, chairs and balloons across the fields. Tents were blown down, and some people were briefly trapped in one of them. Airplanes parked nearby from the airport sustatined damage from an airborne tent. Many vendors also suffered damage to their tents. Later in the afternoon, another round of thunderstorms deposited two inch diameter hail at Stockport in Columbia county. Thunderstorms produced local wind damage at Plattekill, New Paltz and Gardiner in Ulster County. The damage consisted of mainly downed trees and large tree limbs. The storms left as many as 7,500 customers without power throughout the Mid Hudson Valley.

A strong cold front crossed eastern New York late on May 18. At the same time, very strong winds aloft moved over the area. The combination of the instability, and lift ahead of the front, spawned a line of thunderstorms. These storm tapped into the strong wind aloft, to produce the largest outbreak of severe weather across eastern New York in nearly two years. While the vast majority of damage was from thunderstorm winds, there was also some hail damage reported, along with two confirmed tornadoes. It was the first time since June 1998 that a tornado was officially confirmed in eastern New York. Thunderstorm winds knocked down large trees a powerlines at several locations in Albany, Columbia, Greene, Montgomery, Saratoga, Schoharie and Ulster counties. Dutchess county was especially hard hit. A line of strong to locally severe thunderstorms first moved into Montgomery County during the mid afternoon. Strong winds blew down large trees in Fort Plain. Then a microburst produced a swath of damage, 8 miles long, from west to east in the town of Canajoharie. The swath began at the intersection of Nestle and Clinton roads where a large barn lost its roof and two sides. Debris was blown over the adjoining house, landing inside a garage on the other side of the intersection, as well as up the roadabout 40 feet . A wooden silo located adjacent to the garage lost one entire side, thus collapsing inward inside the silo. The rest of the damage was mainly from snapped power poles and trees, as the path ended just west of Knauderack Creek, adjacent to Bower road. Trees and powerlines came down in Selkirk, Albany county, as well as Gilboa and Jefferson in Schoharie county. At Ballston Lake, in Saratoga county, a microburst sheared off 8 forty-foot trees at the 10 to 20 foot level. One tree damaged a house. More trees and limbs fell in Clifton Park. Another series of microbursts began in Ulster county about a mile northwest of the center of Esopus. They knocked down several clusters of trees as they neared State HIghway Route 9W, while moving in an easterly direction. Embedded within the microburst, an F1 tornado, touched down briefly to the east of Black Creek and 9W, less than a tenth of a mile south of the center of Esopus. The track of the tornado was about a quarter mile long and 25 to 50 yards wide with numerous trees pushed about 70 degrees to the left of the storm track. There was little property damage due to the tornado, but it was sighted by nearby residents. Meanwhile the series of microbursts continued across the Hudson river, into Dutchess county, blowing over over the estreme southern portion of Hydeo Park as well as the Poughkeepsie Yacht club in northern Poughkeepsie. Winds were clocked at 126 mph at the Poughkeepsie Yacht club. Several boats were overturned and damaged. A trailer was overturned. The roof was removed from the Yacht club. Damage from this microburst fanned out to a width of approximately one hundred yards, and a path length of up to a quarter of a mile. The wind overturned a car. The roof was removed from the Yacht club. Damage from this microburst fanned out to a width of approximatley 100 yards, and a path length of up to a quarter of a mile. A car was damaged by a falling tree in Hyde Park. A weaker F0 tornado, touched down in the Fairview section of the town of Poughkeepsie, about one quarter mile east of the Fairview Fire Station, on the leading edge of another microburst. The width was 25 yards, the length less than one hundred yards. Damage from the tornado was marginal, confined to downed trees and some minor structural damage to seven homes. Thunderstorm winds produced damage in many other portions of Dutchess county. Another microburst produced damage between County Route 83, just north of U.S. Highway Route 44, east to the village of Leedsville. Damage included destruction to a barn on the Bel Air farm. Many trees were down in a huge swath with this microburst. There were unconfirmed sightings of funnel clouds in this area. Many trees fell in Millbrook, which was described as a war zone. Large trees were uprooted in Clinton Corners and falling trees knocked powerlines down in Rhinebeck. In Pawling, a large tree fell on power lines, then crashed onto a car, causing extensive damage. Trees were blown across a power line, which then fell on Allyn's restaurant in the Town of Washington. Trees and poles were also blown down in the village of Fishkill. Winds were clocked to 70 mph in Stone Ridge, and 60 mph at New Paltz, both in Ulster county. Many windows were smashed or blown out of buildings at the New Paltz S.U.N.Y. campus. Trees were blown over in Ellenville. A tree fell on the mayor's car in that town, destroying it. Another tree damaged a historical home. A 60 mph wind gust was also recoreded at Kinderhook, Columbia county. Two 50-foot concrete silos of a coach barn in Gallatin, Columbia county were obliterated. A door was blown off a nearby house. In the promixity of Gallatin, a car was destroyed by a fallen tree. Huge trees fell on Schneider road in Columbia county. Many trees were snapped off their bases in East Taghkanic. Shingles from a roof were blown off in Cairo, Greene county and large trees fell on a house in and around the town of Phoenicia. A microburst uprooted many 22 to 24 inch diameter trees and snapped utility lines in the vicinity of Route 23, a few hundred yards north of the intersection of County Route 23A. Dime size hail fell at Kerhonkson, Ulster county. Pea-size hail was noted at Tivoli and Clinton corners, both located in Dutchess county. While property damage with the hail was minimized, hail took a toll on apple orchards. Many apples were partially damaged by small hail in Ulster and Dutchess counties that produced permanent indentations on the apples, making them unusable for sale. Total crop damage could easily exceed a million dollars. Lightning took the life of two horses at a farm in Ballston Lake. At the height of the storms, up to 52,000 customers, mainly in the Mid Hudson Valley region, were without power. A funnel cloud was noted by two on-duty meteorologists at the National Weather Service office at Albany. There were no human injuries or casualties, reported to the National Weather Service, in association with this large severe outbreak.
