Rensselaer Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Widespread tree and power line damage was reported throughout Rensselaer with numerous large trees blown down. Many trees were snapped several feet above ground. At least one car was damaged by a fallen tree limb. A 25 foot tall tree was uprooted at the courthouse. Roofing material was blown off buildings in downtown.
Several grain bins were knocked down. Trees and power lines were blown down on the east side of Rensselaer. Roof damage occurred to several businesses and outbuildings.

A tornado touched down along Sparling Road halfway between Schuster and Mt. Calvary Roads. The tornado moved northeast across southeastern portions of Rensselaer. A truck was overturned near Route 231 and and Drexel. Power lines, tree limbs and shingles were blown down. The tornado lifted near Highway 114, just east of the high school.
Widespread tree and power line damage was reported across Jasper County.

A powerful line of thunderstorms moved across northwest Indiana during the early morning hours of May 23rd producing widespread wind damage.
On the morning of July 22, a cold front extended from central Great Lakes region, southwestward through southern Wisconsin and into central Iowa. Ahead of the frontal boundary, Northern Illinois and Indiana were very moist, humid and unstable. In the late morning hours, a line of thunderstorms crossed the Mississippi River into western Illinois. This line continued to develop eastward and by around 1:00PM began to enter Grundy and Will Counties in northeastern Illinois. The storms had intensified with their eastward progression and continued into northwestern Indiana and over southern Lake Michigan. Storms produced up to penny sized hail and wind gusts up to 55 kts in northeastern Illinois. The line of storms tracked over southern Lake Michigan and into northwestern Indiana where they produced wind gusts up to 50 kts and widespread tree and power line damage in Jasper County.
An intense winter storm, which developed in the Texas Panhandle, moved northeast across southern Illinois and northeast Indiana on December 11 and 12, causing heavy snow and ice over northwest Indiana. Significant ice accumulations occurred due to sleet and freezing rain in southern Newton, southern Jasper and Benton counties before changing to snow. The ice storm knocked out power. Mainly snow fell in northern Newton and northern Jasper Counties. Snow totals included 6.8 inches at Wheatfield and 5.5 inches at Lake Village. Winds gusted to 25 to near 35 mph during the late afternoon and evening causing considerable blowing and drifting of snow. No deaths were directly related to this storm system.
Thunderstorm winds downed trees and power lines in Rennselaer. Trees and power lines were downed in Kentland, blocking roads.
