Episodes
A powerful storm system tracked through the central Plains and Upper Midwest January 22 bringing both severe thunderstorm and blizzard conditions to portions of the central US. A line of thunderstorms crossed through central Kentucky during the evening hours and brought wind gusts of 40 to 55 mph along with numerous hail reports. Some of the hail reached quarter size in diameter, with a few gusts estimated to have exceeded 60 mph.
A stalled frontal boundary draped across south central Kentucky interacted with a passing upper level disturbance to spark a long lived round of severe thunderstorms. Storms initiated in portions of southwest Kentucky and then grew into an organized cluster that tracked all the way into portions of West Virginia. These storms were responsible for a narrow path of damaging winds, mostly downed trees and power lines.
A powerful cyclone began to deepen over Illinois during the afternoon hours on October 31st. Toward midnight, as low pressure moved across southern Lake Michigan, it deepened to well below 990mb. A powerful low level jet developed over the Lower Ohio Valley by mid-afternoon, as winds at 925mb increased to around 55kt by evening. These winds translated to surface winds of around 30 mph with frequent gusts up to 50 mph across southern Indiana and the Commonwealth. In addition to strong gradient winds, several convective lines developed across central Kentucky during the evening. Despite a lack of thunder, these lines of showers brought additional wind damage across the eastern Bluegrass and Lake Cumberland Regions during the early morning hours of November 1st.
A warm front coupled with an upper level system set off severe thunderstorms over parts of central Kentucky. A tree was blown on to a mobile home north of Richmond in Madison County. A barn was blown down in Larue County. Most other damage reported was in the form of downed trees and power lines.
An approaching cold front set off isolated severe thunderstorms over east central and south central Kentucky. Observed damage was in the form of downed trees and power lines. Some large hail was also reported.
