A weather system crossed Wyoming on July 24th, encouraging thunderstorm development. Severe thunderstorm winds occurred in multiple locations across northern and central Wyoming. At the Lander airport, a maximum wind gust of 74 mph was recorded. In Park County, wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph were reported. In Cody, 400 customers lost power when trees were downed by the wind and fell on power lines.
A shortwave and Pacific moisture combined to produce severe weather across portions of western and central Wyoming. The worst damage was in Afton, Wyoming, where a microburst occurred. A wind gust of 60 mph was reported at the Afton, Wyoming airport. Numerous trees were blown down in the Star Valley, and there were numerous reports of power outages in the Star Valley. Further northeast, golf ball size hail was reported at Buffalo, Wyoming and nickel sized hail at Riverton, Wyoming.
Thunderstorm winds estimated at 58 mph downed two power poles in Riverton.
Thunderstorm wind gust to near 60 mph reported at the National Weather Service Office. Downed power line caused power outages in parts of Riverton for about 2 hours.
