Salmon Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Road crews, the public, and the county emergency manager all had reports of damage from the strong winds during the late evening. Power companies reported outages to approximately 600 customers due to trees on power lines. A storm spotter in the area reported losing a few shingles, while another resident lost a stove pipe off the roof on the west side of Salmon, ID. Road crews reported downed Cottonwood trees on US-93.
The Salmon RAWS located 3 miles southwest of the city of Salmon at 5,100 feet reported a strong wind gust to 69 mph that occurred sometime between 5:36 and 6:00 pm MDT. Weather spotters reported trees down and a power outage in Salmon. A television news station reported on Facebook that over 5,000 people were affected. A person from the public in Salmon commented on this post that power was still out in parts of Salmon at 9 am MDT on September 6th.
A trained spotter in Salmon, Idaho reported trees down over roadways, power lines down in three different areas with power outages and a roof over a patio blew off.

Strong rising air associated with the nose of a 50 knot mid-level south-southwest jet combined with near record high moisture levels and an unstable atmosphere triggered wet multicellular thunderstorms over Lemhi County by late afternoon on September 5th. Flash flooding and power outages were the main impacts. To get an understanding how moist the air mass associated with this southwest surge was, the Boise weather balloon sounding recorded the 2nd highest moisture level (precipitable water values) on record on the evening of the 5th.
Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds moved through eastern Lemhi County during the evening hours. Wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph were reported by Sheriff Dispatch and trained spotters. Sheriff reported one house with a roof blown off and numerous power lines down.
Strong thunderstorm winds caused damage in and around the Salmon, ID area. Wind gusts to 62 MPH, downed trees and powerlines.
Downburst winds from thunderstorms caused damage in and around the Salmon, Idaho area, with scattered reports of damage near North Fork and Gibbonsville. Numerous trees and power lines were reported down with damage to roofs on homes. Windows were blown out in two homes in Salmon. Some reported wind values recorded during the storm were:Ezra Creek Raws 69 MPH at 813 PM MST, Salmon 61 MPH at 835 PM MST, Salmon Raws 76 MPH at 852 PM MST, and Kriley Creek 82 MPH at 928 PM MST.
