Strong winds and rough seas caused cancellation of Alcatraz Cruises and all Golden Gate Transit ferry services https://abc7news.com/weather/epic-winds-cause-fallen-trees-power-lines-in-bay-area-/5915604/.
SFFD has been responding to downed trees and power lines. Over 20 power outages spread across San Francisco. Largest outage in Lower Haight. Also reporting localized flooding in multiple locations throughout the city.
The heat wave across the region triggered power outages knocking out service to 26,400 people across 9 counties on Monday followed by an additional 30,400 on Tuesday https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2019/06/11/pge-transformers-in-bay-area-cant-always-cope-with-heat-waves/?utm_campaign=socialflow&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_content=tw-EastBayTimes.
The storm system produced high waves that coincided with Thursday morning high tides causing flooding on the Embarcadero where one lane was shut down https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2019/01/17/atmospheric-river-bay-area-storm-aftermath-deaths-flooding-power-outages/.
News report states roughly 1200 customers around the Bay Area are without power.
Tree down in Bernal Heights of San Francisco that took down some power lines.
Downed trees and power lines in San Francisco resulted in outages impacting up to 95,000 customers.
Gusty winds toppled a few trees in the Presidio of San Francisco and brought down powerlines. A large cypress tree fell and brought down adjacent power lines. Fallen live wires forced the closure of Infantry Terrace and Moraga Avenue.
During the event, power outages impacted up to 2000 customers in the San Francisco Metro area.
Strong winds in San Francisco knocked over two stories of scaffolding at a building under renovation at 20th and Deharo Streets. The scaffolding fell into a set of power lines.
High winds which gusted over 60 MPH across San Francisco and the surrounding areas produced thousands of power outages. Newspaper accounts show at least 17,000 customers out of power in various locations around the Bay Area on April 8. This included nearly 5,000 customers in the city of San Francisco itself.
Dozens of trees were knocked down in Sonoma County as strong wind combined with saturated soil. In particular, a man was injured and his vehicle severely damaged when a large tree and power lines fell onto his car shortly after 7:00 a.m. PST.
Strong winds across San Francisco brought numerous trees down and caused thousands of buildings to lose power. On Hyde Street near Green Street a parked car was crushed as a three-story high eucalyptus tree fell onto it while a truck just pulling away received a cracked windshield. At the San Francisco State University campus a few trees were uprooted near Mary Park and Mary Ward halls. Elsewhere in the city a tree fell across the entire span of Broadway between Powell and Stockton Streets. Over 125 calls to the Department of Public Works regarding tree issues occurred.
About 47,000 residents lost power around San Francisco as thunderstorms rolled through the city/county. The largest outage affected 36,000 customers in parts of Sunset, Glen Park and Park Merced neighborhoods. One lightning strike hit a power transformer causing it to explode. Besides the total destruction of the power transformer, two vehicles were damaged at the intersection of Broderick and Sacramento Roads.
Episodes
A rapidly intensifying cyclone brought high winds to the region. A High Wind Warning was issued for the San Mateo Peninsula Coast, the Santa Cruz Mountains, and the Central Coast. In addition, a couple of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued in light of the expected extreme winds for the Monterey and Santa Cruz areas. Over 110,000 customers lost power throughout the Bay Area and Santa Cruz County as a result of the cyclone.
An atmospheric river brought widespread high winds and rain, leading to significant damage, power outages, and injuries. High Wind Warnings were issued for the entire region, and over 180,000 customers lost electricity during the event. Impacts were compounded by an earlier system that resulted in widespread damage, some areas of the Monterey Peninsula lost power again after having lost power for days from the previous system.
Strong northwest winds developed around the San Francisco Bay Area and Central Coast on the afternoon of April 11 after a cold front passed through the region earlier in the day. A wind advisory was issued for the entire CWA Sunday evening through 9 P.M. The region experienced widespread wind gusts of 30 to 50 mph, with localized gusts over 60 mph along the coast. The winds downed trees and powerlines across the area, leading to road closures, traffic snarls, and damage to houses and cars. Winds began to settle down later in the evening.
A rare winter time offshore wind event affected the Greater Bay Area in mid to late January. It was unusual given the long duration and wide areal coverage as well as the time of year. An upper level disturbance passed over the region the 17th-18th leading to a tightening offshore pressure gradient before a second and stronger disturbance the 18th-19th tightened it further. This lead to two bursts of strong offshore winds. Higher elevations across the region reported gusts between 60 and 80 mph with two sites reaching 90. Lower elevations also were notably in excess of 40 mph. These winds resulted in tree damage, downed trees, and downed powerlines causing power outages. This all led to a rare January Red Flag Warning for Monterey and San Benito counties where fuels remained dry from lack of rainfall. Roughly a dozen small fires broke out in the Santa Cruz Mountains, with two becoming relatively large for January. Full storm summary https://www.weather.gov/mtr/Wind_1_17-19_2021.
An offshore wind event impacted the region from February 8th through the 9th when an upper trough moved through the Great Basin. Widespread wind gusts of 45 to 60 mph were observed with gusts of 87 mph recorded on Mt St. Helena. Trees and power lines were knocked down causing scattered power outages and property damage. Around 80,000 customers were without power across the Bay Area according to PG&E.
A cold front swept through the region on the 7th bringing gusty southerly winds, heavy rain, and flooding. Winds brought down trees and power lines across the greater Bay Area resulting in injuries to two people in San Francisco. Downed power lines also left over 1,000 people without power in the Santa Cruz Mountains as well as causing several additional power outages across San Francisco. A line of strong showers moved over San Francisco bringing urbanized flooding to the city and strong winds. Roads as well as municipal stations were underwater.
A low pressure system moving in from the Gulf of Alaska and drawing in moisture from the tropics combined to bring the first atmospheric river event of the winter season to the Greater Bay Area. This system brought widespread heavy rainfall, roadway flooding, and strong winds to the region. Rare Storm Warnings were issued over the coastal waters where buoys reported wind gusts in excess of 50 mph. Bay Area peaks recorded wind gusts between 60 to 70 mph with gusts along the Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur Coast at 50 to 60 mph. These winds caused downed trees and power outages across the area.
A series of offshore wind events plagued much of California towards the end of October. Cut off lows (also known as insider sliders) moved into the Great Basin as an upper ridge sat over the eastern Pacific. Strong surface high pressure also building over the Great Basin and a trough along the California coast provided the set up for one of the strongest dry offshore winds over the greater Bay Area since the 2017 North Bay Fires. Winds remained elevated for at least 24 hours with gusts in the hills 60 to 80 mph. A peak gust of 102 mph was recorded near the Kincade Fire. These winds promoted rapid growth of the Kincade Fire and along with very dry conditions allowed for multiple new wildfires to spark in the greater Bay Area. A large amount of the community in Sonoma County was evacuated downwind of the Kincade Fire in response. Prior to the event PG&E shut off power to over 2 million people across the state of California.
The combination of high pressure and strong offshore flow resulted in an early season heat wave across the Bay Area from June 9th to the 11th. Multiple daily records were broken across the region and multiple power outages were reported due to the heat. Approximately 26,000 people across the region lost power on Monday followed by an additional 30,000 on Tuesday. Three fatalities were reported during the heat event. One man died as a direct result of heat related illness while two others drowned while attempting to cool down during the heat wave. Hot temperatures and dry grass resulted in a vegetation fire that spread to a residence.
On the night of November 26th an upper level low along with a cold front just out ahead dumped widespread rainfall across the region along with gusty winds up to 50 mph. This system caused minor roadway flooding along with downed trees and power lines.
A strong wind storm struck the Bay Area on December 30 during the afternoon and evening hours. Strong winds brought down numerous trees and power lines across the area. The combination of recent heavy rains earlier in the month brought weakened ground conditions and then there were numerous dead trees across the area from years of ongoing drought. Major disruptions to the evening commute due to downed trees and the accidents they caused were observed. Wind gusts of 40-55 MPH were widespread across the area. Despite most areas not reaching 60 MPH, there was widespread wind damage and impacts due to the reasons above.
Strong and gusty west-northwest winds impacted much of the Bay Area resulting in downed trees, downed power lines, toppled scaffolding, and blown over tractor trailers. An unseasonably cold and rapidly developing low pressure system moved through the Bay Area during the afternoon hours of October 27 and the early morning hours of October 28th. As the surface low rapdily deepened a tight pressure gradient developed across the Bay Area, most notably the East Bay. The dropping surface pressures and rather strong onshore pressure gradient helped to produce widespread wind gusts in excess of 35 mph with a few locations over 60 mph. As the strong onshore winds were squeezed through the East Bay hills winds were enhanced knocking over tractor trailers on Altamont Pass.
Strong winds moved through the area during the early morning hours of Friday, October 4. Winds gusted high enoguh to down trees and powerlines, causing several wildfires to ignite and spread quickly.
Strong and gusty northwest winds impacted much of the Bay Area resulting in downed trees, downed power lines, rough seas and even broken windows. A weak cold front moved through the Bay Area during the overnight hours of April 8th. As the cold front exited quickly to the south and east of the Bay Area high pressure began to build over the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. As a result, the northerly pressure gradient increased rapidly during the early morning hours of April 8th. ||The rather strong northerly pressure gradient helped to produce widespread wind gusts in excess of 35 mph with a few locations over 60 mph. Numerous reports of downed trees and power lines were received as a result of the strong winds. The strong winds also impacted KSFO airport and a Airport Weather Warning (AWW) was issued for gusts up to 40 kts. The last major wind event to impact the Bay Area was January 4th, 2008 where 100 mph gusts were reported.||Over the coastal waters the strong winds helped to produce hazardous conditions with steep wind waves and confused seas. Gale Warnings were in effect for much of the coastal waters including San Francisco Bay. Buoy observations indicated many locations were near storm force conditions with several gusts up to 47 kts. Buoy 26, east of the Farallon Islands, reported one hour of storm force conditions with a gust up to 49 kts. The strong winds and fresh swell also resulted in combined seas up to 20 feet, as noted by the Half Moon Bay Buoy (Buoy 12).
A strong trough moved along the northern California coast bringing heavy rain and strong wind to the San Francisco Bay Area and central coast. Localized flooding, damaging wind, downed trees and power lines, and minor debris flows all occurred during this last week of the year. More than 77,000 households and businesses lost power during this storm.
The second in a series of significant storms brought strong winds and heavy rain to the San Francisco and Monterey Bay area. This storm developed over the Pacific Ocean with a strong parent low pressure based in the Gulf of Alaska. Around 137,000 customers lost power across the San Francisco Bay area. Numerous power lines and trees were knocked down when strong wind combined with saturated soil.
A low pressure system tapped into sub-tropical moisture causing hundreds of lightning strikes in thunderstorms around the San Francisco Bay Area, California. Nearly 50,000 Bay Area residents lost power and dozens of small fires were started.
High pressure aloft centered over Reno, NV along with weak offshore flow at the surface caused temperatures to rise to near 100 degrees in the inland valleys of north-central California. Heat exhausted individuals, blown electric transformers and power outages accompanied the heat.
A mainly dry Pacific storm produced damaging wind to the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas. Widespread power outages, downed power lines and trees, boats broken loose from there moorings, and even a big-rig forced onto its side were casualties of this powerful system. Over 55,000 customers lost power during this storm.
A very strong cyclone slammed into the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas bringing flooding rains, high winds, record high surf and coastal flooding. Hundreds of thousands of residences and businesses were without power, some for several days due to high winds toppling power lines. Property damage in the millions was reported due to falling trees hitting cars and structures as well as damage to roads due to heavy rain. Preliminary totals indicate over $1.5 million in damage in the City of Oakland, nearly $1 million in Monterey County and about $150,000 in Santa Cruz County.
A strong storm system swept across the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas, knocking out power to thousands of homes and businesses. One person died when gusty winds knocked a tree into a home in Lagunitas, in Marin County. Numerous roadways were closed after the blustery winds swept debris onto them. Property damage is estimated at over $1 million including both commercial and residential structures.
One very strong weather system affected central California during November. For a three-day period starting on the 7th of the month, rainfall totaling 2-5 inches fell across the North Bay counties, 2-4 inches fell across the San Francisco Peninsula, 1-3 inches fell across the East Bay, 1-4 inches fell across the South Bay and 1-2 inches fell across Monterey and San Benito Counties. The most rain fell across Santa Cruz County during this period where rainfall totals ranged from 2 inches to as much as 8 inches in the higher elevations of the coastal hills. Since this was the first appreciable rain of the season, no major flooding occurred with the ground absorbing most of the rain. Only urban and small stream advisories were needed. Stronmg winds at SFO blew the Roof off a large aircraft hangar. Many trees and branches were down blocking riads and interuptting power. winds also blew down power poles and lines. as many as 1 million homes were with out pawer at one time.A number of trees fell onhomes and automobiles. Total damae to the area has been estimated at 2.5 million dollars from this stormSummary of Thursday (November 7, 2002) Bay Area winds:Strongest: 96 mph gust at Kregor Peak, Contra Costa County @ 8 PMOther Peak Winds of note:Pt. Power Outage FAQs
What is Power Outage?
Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.
What Causes Power Outages?
- Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.
What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
- Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
- Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
- Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
