Scottsbluff Power Outages Caused by Weather

RAWS mesonet station Scotts Bluff (SBFN1) measured maximum wind gust 2 mile west of Gering at 7:52 PM MDT on the 22nd. Scottsbluff Airport ASOS station (KBFF) also reported high winds with gusts to 70 mph. Multiple reports of damage in Scottsbluff including the roof being blown off the Scottsbluff Airport, structural damage to multiple schools in the county, and large trees completely blown over. Numerous power lines were blown down resulting in multiple fire starts. Approximately 3,350 people were left without power.
Nebraska Public Power District reports 3,361 customers without power in the Scottsbluff area due to wind.
Reports of power poles broken along a 3 to 4 mile stretch of road 1 mile west of McGrew.

Episodes
Dissipating thunderstorms moving northeast out of northern Colorado produced destructive outflow winds over portions of the southern Nebraska Panhandle. Measured wind gusts around 60 mph were observed while trained spotters estimated higher speeds. Damage south of Scottsbluff included four snapped wooden power poles and an overturned farm pivot.
A powerful low pressure system tracked into the central Great Plains producing a tight pressure gradient and trowal winter precipitation that produced blizzard or near-blizzard conditions and high winds throughout the Panhandle. Peak wind gusts were measured into the upper 60 mph range with several drifts exceeding two feet across Sioux, Dawes, and Box Butte Counties.
A rapid strengthening Colorado Low in the lee of the Rockies coupled with a deepening shortwave trough and jet support gave the ingredients to again produce widespread snow across the Nebraska Panhandle. Much of Interstate 80 was closed due to adverse winter weather conditions. Power outages from heavy snow and strong winds were felt across portions of Dawes County.
Strong winds and large hail were produced by passing thunderstorms over Scotts Bluff and Morrill Counties. Some power flashes were associated with downed power lines by these strong winds.
On May 24th a strong cold front was moving eastward through the area. During the late morning warnings were already being issued for the NE Panhandle. By mid-afternoon the cold front had pushed far enough eastward to move the activity out of our area. After the dust had settled, 3 tornado warnings and 14 severe t-storm warnings had been issued. Wind gusts of over 70 mph, and hailstones of up to four inches were reported. Highway 30 from mile marker 87 to 95 was briefly closed due to downed power lines. According to the Kimball County Sheriff, the storm caused an estimated five million dollars damage to the Kimball area.

A tornado tracked approximately 1 to 3 miles ENE of Gering, causing significant damage to a structure with debris scattered up to 1/2 mile to the west, including hazardous material. Vehicles on the property were thrown 50 feet. A small wooden trailer was thrown 1/4 mile away. Additionally, irrigation pivots were rolled numerous times and power lines were broken along Highway 26. Damage was consistent with an EF-2 tornado. Confirmed by official NWS Storm Survey.
