Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Clay County

Ice Storm. Ice accumulated to a quarter to half inch across the northern portions of Clay County. Irene reported a half inch of ice accumulation, and as winds increased during the overnight and early day on April 11, scattered power outages resulted as stress from ice accumulation took down power lines. Snowfall toward the end of the storm produced accumulations of 1 to 4 inches, with 1.0 inches at Vermillion and 1.2 inches 5 miles south southeast of Centerville.

April 10, 2019

Winter Weather. Freezing rain of one to two tenths of an inch caused icy roads, and accumulated on trees, power lines, and other surfaces. Vermillion reported 0.20 inch of rain during a time when temperatures were at or below freezing. Law enforcement agencies reported a few vehicles accidents on the ice, but no known injuries, with traffic being light because of the holiday, business closings, and activity cancellations. Light winds prevented significant damage to trees and power lines.

January 17, 2017

High Wind. High winds from a westerly direction followed a low pressure system which had brought Christmas Day rain and thunderstorms. There were several reports of power lines and branches down and resulting power outages, and traffic lights and signs were damaged. The winds included a measured peak gust of 66 mph at Vermillion Airport.

High Wind. Westerly winds behind a cold front reach sustained speed of 40 to 45 mph for a few hours. The high winds caused spotty power line and traffic light damage.

Thunderstorm Wind. Thunderstorm winds caused tree damage, including at least one large limb blown down. The falling limb damaged the corner of a house. A power outage was reported.
