Power Outage in Smithville, TN

Several hours of severe non-thunderstorm winds resulted in numerous reports of downed trees and limbs, powerlines, and roof and property damage across all of DeKalb County. Damages are estimated.

A tree and power line were blown down along Highway 70 at Dunn Lane.

Freezing rain brought ice accumulations up to 1/2 inch across De Kalb County, resulting in dozens of downed trees, power lines, and power poles. Some trees, power lines, and power poles fell onto homes and blocked numerous roads. Damage estimates from the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency reached 379,000 dollars.

Part of the sheet metal roof of a gas station was blown off and across Highway 56 into a home at Old Blue Springs Road. The gas station sign was also damaged and a power pole was snapped.

Precipitation totals across De Kalb County ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 of combined ice and sleet. A CoCoRaHS observer 5.8 miles NE of Dowelltown measured 1.5 of combined ice and sleet, while a CoCoRaHS observer 3.0 miles SSE of Silver Point measured 0.5 of ice and 0.3 of sleet. Numerous trees and power lines were knocked down across the county, and many roads and schools were closed.

An EF1 tornado with maximum wind speeds around 95 mph touched down about 1 mile northwest of Smithville along Highway 83, then tracked rapidly east-northeast across Center Hill Lake before ending in western White County about 7 miles northwest of Sparta. A barn was damaged near the beginning of the path, with sheet metal blown across fields and into power lines. Scattered trees were snapped or uprooted and some minor damage to homes occurred on the north side of Smithville as the tornado traveled generally along and just south of Highway 83 and Smithville Highway. A small warehouse-type building was destroyed at Smithville Highway and Pine Grove Road with debris thrown northward into fields. The roof of a barn was blown off and a few homes suffered minor roof damage at Holiday Haven Road and Scott Acres Road. The tornado increased in intensity as it moved along Alpine Drive, with hundreds of trees snapped or uprooted. One home on stilts was knocked down a hillside and destroyed, resulting in one fatality.||The tornado then crossed Center Hill Lake, blowing down hundreds of more trees along the south shore of the lake on Allen Ferry Road, Timber Lane, Back Bone Lane, and Falling Water Road. Several trees fell on homes in this area, resulting in minor to moderate roof damage. Passing just north of the Johnson Chapel Recreation Area, the tornado then continued eastward into White County.

One quarter to one half of an inch of ice accumulations on trees, power lines, and other exposed surfaces caused scattered to widespread power outages across the county.

Only a few trees were reported down with the storm as it moved through DeKalb County. However, one tree which fell across power lines on West Broad Street caused a large power outage throughout many areas of the city.

Numerous trees and power lines were blown down around the county. Newspaper account mentioned large trees were down from Goose Creek Road in Alexandria to Johnson's Chapel Road in the eastern part of the county. Trees were blown down in the Four Seasons area as well.

Newspaper related story of many trees blown down, trees on homes and cars and trees blocking roads. A half dozen or more homes were damaged. There were downed trees and power lines as well. The hardest hit area was the eastern part of the county at Ragland Bottom and Hillcrest Hills. 38 homes were damaged in Dekalb County.

Newspaper story reported that southern DeKalb county got hit with very heavy rains, some areas with over 5 inches of rain in one hour. Several local motorists found themselves stranded in their vehicles as they waited for swollen streams and creeks to recede in their banks. A school bus was trapped on Bright Hill Road between rapidly moving waters across the roadway and a downed tree and power lines. Emergency personnel had to rescue occupants of a car on Bright Hill Road and push the small car out of the swift moving water. There were no injuries.
