Episodes
A cluster of thunderstorms that initiated during the night of June 28th across the Central Plains entered west-central Illinois by the late morning of June 29th. Aided by an increasingly unstable airmass characterized by CAPE values of 3000-4000J/kg and a 30-40kt mid-level jet streak, the storms became linear in nature and began racing east-southeastward across central Illinois. Widespread wind gusts of 60-80mph were observed along the line, with localized corridors of even higher gusts. The highest measured gust of 101 mph came from a personal weather station near Taylorville that took a direct hit from a tornado. A total of seven tornadoes were embedded within the line of storms, including an EF-2 tornado near Curran in Sangamon County. The high winds caused extensive tree and power line damage, leading to power loss for over 200,000 customers. Some people in the Springfield area were without power for nearly a week before all lines were restored. The winds impacted all of central and southeast Illinois, but were most concentrated between the I-74 and I-70 corridors. Once the line of storms dropped into the Ohio River Valley, additional severe cells fired along the trailing outflow boundary south of I-70 during the late afternoon. These storms produced hail as large as 2 inches in diameter across parts of Clay, Richland, and Lawrence counties.
As a vigorous upper-level wave tracked eastward out of the southern Rockies, surface low pressure formed over Texas then lifted northeastward into the Ohio River Valley on March 3rd. Analysis from the evening of March 2nd showed a 991mb low over central Texas...with the low rapidly deepening to 976mb as it tracked into southern Indiana by the afternoon of March 3rd. Surface pressures of these magnitudes are rare across the Midwest and are in fact more comparable to a tropical storm or hurricane. To the north of the low track, central Illinois got battered with very strong gradient winds. Northeasterly gusts frequently topped 50 mph...with the highest gusts in excess of 60 mph focused in a corridor from Decatur and Mattoon northeastward to Champaign. The highest gust recorded was 72 mph at the Mattoon Airport. Given the high wind gusts from an unusual direction (northeast), several trees, tree branches, and power lines were downed across the area.
An Arctic cold front pushed through central Illinois on December 22nd, causing temperatures to plummet from early morning highs in the 30s to evening lows from zero to ten below zero. As weak waves of low pressure tracked along the front, light snow developed across the area...with accumulations ranging from 1 to 3 inches. Despite the overall light snowfall, strong winds gusting in excess of 40mph created considerable blowing and drifting snow which led to near zero visibility at times...particularly in open, rural locations. The combination of falling snow, blowing snow, low visibility, and extremely cold temperatures caused major disruption to commerce and travel across central Illinois. Numerous schools and businesses closed due to the inclement weather and several traffic accidents occurred as roads became snow-covered and slick. In addition, scattered power outages were reported.
A cold front interacting with a warm and humid airmass triggered several clusters of strong to severe thunderstorms across parts of central Illinois during the evening of September 18th into the early morning of September 19th. The storms were concentrated along and north of I-74 and along and southwest of a Rushville to Springfield line. Many of the storms produced wind damage and large hail, with the largest 2.5 inch-diameter hailstones being observed in Mahomet in Champaign County. In addition, an EF-0 tornado touched down near LeRoy in McLean County causing minor roof damage and knocking down several trees and power poles.
A strong nocturnal low-level jet interacting with a nearly stationary frontal boundary triggered a Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) over northern Missouri during the pre-dawn hours of June 17th. The large thunderstorm cluster tracked east-southeastward along the boundary, producing significant wind damage and flash flooding. The storms were focused along and southeast of a Rushville...to Springfield...to Shelbyville...to Robinson line. Numerous trees and power lines were blown down. In addition, very heavy rainfall of 3 to 5 inches along and south of a Jacksonville to Effingham line created pockets of flash flooding.

Power Outage FAQs
What is Power Outage?
Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.
What Causes Power Outages?
- Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.
What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
- Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
- Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
- Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
