Stafford Springs Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
In Tolland, the Fire Dept. reported a tree and wires down at Old Stafford Road and Curtis Drive. Also, a tree was down on power lines on Slater Road.
In Coventry, a short-lived tornado touched down near the intersection of South Street and Pucker Street, downing several large trees in a field. It had a discontinuous path as it traveled to the east-northeast across a wooded area, where it created pockets of tree damage. It then touched down again just north of the intersection of Flanders Road and Nathan Hale Drive, where it damaged power lines and then moved through another wooded area. At least 50 trees were damaged in this area, with many having their tops sheared off. More than a dozen trees were blown down. It appears that the tornado dissipated quickly after that, since no other significant damage was observed farther to the northeast. No homes in the area had any damage. Two residents reported hearing the tornado warning, moving to safety in their basement, and then about 15 minutes later hearing a loud wind that lasted just moments. The tornado is estimated to have been on the ground no more than 90 seconds.
In Coventry at 817 AM EST, a tree was down on State Street and at 1228 PM EST, power lines were down on Main Street at Hemlock Point. In Andover at 1112 AM EST, a tree was down on wires on Hutchinson Road.
Winds generally were gusting to around 50 mph. To the west, at Windsor Locks, the ASOS at the Bradley International Airport (KBDL) recorded a wind gust to 47 mph at 130 AM EST on March 13th. In Mansfield at 942 PM EST on March 12th, a tree and power lines were down on West Street.
At 7:08 AM EST a trained spotter in Somers reported ice accumulation of one-eighth inch. There were no reports of damage, but these amounts normally indicate some transportation issues and possible power outages.

Power Outage FAQs
What is Power Outage?
Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.
What Causes Power Outages?
- Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.
What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
- Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
- Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
- Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
