February 12, 2014

An area of low pressure tracked from the Gulf of Mexico to off the southeast coast, producing widespread precipitation across southeast Georgia. A wedge of high pressure provided shallow, cold air, supporting the development of freezing rain at many locations away from the immediate coast. Across many inland areas, a major ice storm occurred with one to three quarters of an inch of ice accumulation and even a few one inch accumulation amounts reported. Widespread trees, large tree limbs, and power lines were reported down due to ice. Many trees were down and blocking area roadways. Widespread, long duration power outages also occurred especially across inland areas of Jenkins, Bulloch, and Screven counties.

November 21, 2005

High winds between departing low pressure and high pressure building into the area caused wind damage across Southeast Georgia. Numerous trees and power lines were knocked down in and around Ellabell, Pembroke, Darien, Isle of Hope, Statesboro, Wilmington Island, Hinesville, Savannah, Tybee Island, and Ludowici. Some of the trees and power lines fell across roads.

February 27, 2005

A deep low pressure system moved along the southeast coast during the overnight hours on the 27th into the 28th. As heavy rainfall exited the area, strong pressure rises brought winds aloft to the surface. Numerous trees and power lines were knocked down across Southeast Georgia, some which were blocking highways.

September 27, 2004

Tropical Storm Jeanne tracked well inland across Georgia but the strongest winds at the time were along the coast. The maximum wind gust associated with the storm was 44 mph at the Savannah airport. Non-tornadic damage in southeast Georgia was limited to isolated trees and limbs down on power lines.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
