Stephenville Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Extreme cold gripped the county for several days. Overnight lows were near or below 20 degrees Fahrenheit almost all week. The period of February 15-16th was the coldest with low temperatures in the single digits and slightly below zero degrees Fahrenheit. The maximum temperature on the 15th was only in the teens. Wind chill values during the 14th-16th were between 0 to -10 degrees Fahrenheit most of the time. The cold temperatures resulted in an extreme amount of damage to pipes, infrastructure, and power.
Erath County Sheriff's Department reported that tree branches and power lines were down across northern parts of the county.
A tornado caused EF-1 damage to several businesses and homes in the city limits of Stephenville. The tornado began near a business on U.S. Highway 377 on the south side of town, damaging a metal building structure. The tornado moved north and northeast, heavily damaging an apartment building, and causing tree and power line damage on the campus of Tarleton State University. As the tornado dissipated, homes and garages were damaged at the Foster's home for children, on the north side of Stephenville.
Numerous large trees and tree branches were knocked down across Stephenville by thunderstorm winds. The newspaper reported that the northwest parts of the city appeared to be hit the hardest by the winds. Power lines were also down in parts of the city.
A limb fell on a car, and a power pole was blown down.
