Stuarts Draft Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Trained spotters reported significant ice accretion resulting in numerous accidents, downed trees and power lines, and power outages throughout the county.
Multiple trees and power lines blew down near the intersection of VA-610 Howardsville Turnpike and VA-634 China Clay Road.
Numerous trees and power lines were blown down in the Mount Solon area, especially along VA-731 Moscow Loop/Natural Chimney Road between VA-42 Scenic Highway and VA-747 Mossy Creek Road.
Several trees blew down, some bringing down wires and power poles near Mount Sidney.
A tree blew down onto power lines near the intersection of US-11 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway and Cedar Lane.
Episodes
An area of low pressure moved through North Carolina before tracking northeast off the coast of Virginia. North of the area of low pressure, a mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain developed. Ice accumulations totaled a few hundredths to two tenths of an inch and snow accumulations totaled a coating to four inches. The greatest impacts were above 2,000 ft AGL, where numerous trees were downed due to the ice. Several accidents and isolated power outages were reported.
An area of low pressure passed by to the west with another area of low pressure developing near the Chesapeake Bay. This resulted in southeasterly winds to overrun colder air near the surface and a prolonged wintry mix/freezing rain event across the Allegheny and Potomac Highlands where temperatures were just below freezing. Ice accumulations totaled one quarter to three quarters for most, with upwards of one inch across the higher terrain of the Blue Ridge. Sleet accumulations totaled upwards of 1 as well. This led to numerous accidents, downed trees and power lines which resulted in isolated power outages.
An area of low pressure brought freezing rain and sleet to Northern Virginia as it moved northeast. One third to one half inch of ice accumulated and formed a glaze on the roads and power lines. This led to school closures, some automobile accidents, and scattered power outages. 15 thousand customers lost power across portions of Virginia.
