An upper atmospheric ridge was dominating much of the United States, with mid-level disturbances traveling along the periphery. During the early morning hours of the 3rd, one of these disturbances created a thunderstorm complex across Quebec, which traveled into Franklin county Vermont. This complex resulted in severe thunderstorms that produced damaging winds in the form of trees knocked down in Bakersfield as well as several large branches knocked onto power lines in Enosburg Falls (Franklin county).
A relatively strong westerly low-level flow interacted with a moderately unstable airmass across northern New York and northern Vermont on the afternoon of the 7th. The end result was scattered thunderstorms across the region, including a supercell structure that originated in Clinton county New York, moved into Grand Isle county, before it knocked a few trees and powerlines down on Murray Street in St. Albans (Franklin county).
A mid-level atmospheric disturbance moved into a extremely warm, humid and unstable airmass across northwest Vermont during the early morning hours of the 2nd. Thunderstorms that developed in southern Quebec, moved into Franklin county and produced localized damaging winds that knocked down trees, large branches and disrupted power in Swanton.
A MCS (Mesoscale Convective System) developed in an extremely warm, humid and unstable airmass across southern Quebec, during the late evening of the 1st, and moved southeast into New Hampshire and Maine by midnight. However, the western edge clipped extreme northern Vermont with severe thunderstorms. A severe thunderstorm moved into Highgate Springs and knocked down dozens of trees, destroyed a gazebo, damaged a barn roof and knocked out power. Witnesses say the damage path was just slightly over a mile. Also, a tree was knocked down on Route 78 in Swanton.
A cold front across southern Quebec the morning of Wednesday, August 10th moved southeast into northern portions of New York and Vermont during the late Afternoon. This front was preceded and accompanied by thunderstorms. A few of the storms were severe, with numerous trees blown down on Rte 78 in and around the Swanton, Vt area. Power outages were reported.
