Power Outage in Sweetwater, TX

A trained spotter reported part of a roof blown off a house and power lines were blown down in Sweetwater.

About a 1/4 to 1/2 inches of ice accumulation was estimated on trees, power lines and objects. This resulted in a few power outages across Nolan County. Schools were closed on October 27, with a 2 hour delay on October 28.

An EF-2 tornado touched down in southeast Nolan County and continued into Taylor County. About 14.5 miles southeast of Sweetwater, drone footage provided by AES Wind Generation Plant showed the EF-2 tornado damaged a large windmill turbine and tore off other windmill blades. The twister also caused roof damage to a residence and knocked down some high powered transmission poles and power lines.

A residence lost its metal roof on a section of the home. Power poles were knocked down. In addition, several branches were snapped due to the wind and leaves stripped due to hail. The hail was at least 6 inches deep on the nearby road.

A West Texas Mesonet located 11 mile southwest of Sweetwater measured a non- thunderstorm wind gust of 64 mph. The strongest winds of 40 to 50 mph with higher gusts blew from around 930 PM to around 1110 PM. According to Taylor Electric Cooperative, 60 power poles were knocked down by the high winds.

A power pole was blown down at Interstate 20 and Mile Marker 239.

Law enforcement reported trees and power lines were down in Sweetwater.

At 135 PM CST, the Sweetwater AWOS measured the highest wind gust from the west southwest at 46 mph. These strong winds went above 44 mph at around noon and continued through at least 135 PM when the strongest wind gust was measured. This strong wind blew down a power pole just north of Interstate 20 near Robert Lee Street.

A trained storm spotter reported strong downburst winds from a thunderstorm that resulted in downed power lines, roof and canopy damage of a gas station, and downed tree limbs about a mile south of Sweetwater at the intersection of Highway 70 and Interstate 20. The trained spotter also reported numerous trees were down, power poles and considerable damage to billboards for about 1.5 miles west of this intersection or gas station. Power was lost to the water plant from one of the downed power poles. Most of the damage was located south of the interstate.

High winds developed with a wake low behind a thunderstorm complex over Nolan County. Mainly western Nolan county was affected with the High winds, especially hard hit was the community of Roscoe where a communications tower was blown down and several power poles were blown down.

An NWS survey team found evidence of tornado damage that extended from near Champion to about 3 miles east of Champion. Several power poles were snapped and a barn was totally destroyed. Irrigation equipment was also thrown about and twisted.

Strong thunderstorms knocked down trees and power lines in Sweetwater. There were numerous windows blown out of homes and businesses.

An eastward surging dryline combined with a strong upper level storm system triggered a line of thunderstorms that moved east into portions of the Big Country. Severe thunderstorm winds knocked over several power poles just south of Rochester, blew down trees and damaged a gymnasium in Rotan, and blew over 4 semis along I-20 in Nolan county.
