Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Franklin County
A powerful low pressure system intensified rapidly as it moved northeast from Texas through Arkansas, southeast Missouri into western Kentucky. In doing so, windy conditions developed across the Tennessee Valley ahead of an associated cold front and squall line. South winds increased to 25-35 mph, with gusts of 40-55 mph at times. An intense squall line moved in from Mississippi, northwest Alabama and southwest Tennessee during the mid morning hours, sweeping east across the rest of southern middle Tennessee through the midday hours. The line of thunderstorms produced a brief period of high wind gusts, which knocked down a few trees and power lines. Behind the line of thunderstorms, the sky cleared out rapidly, but southwest winds continued at 25-35 mph, with gusts of 40-50 mph. The winds finally subsided quickly near sunset, but not until after additional damage occurred.

A powerful upper level low pressure system moved northeast through southern Alabama into central Georgia during the morning hours of the 12th. Widespread rainfall changed to wet snow for a brief period, mainly in the higher elevations above 1000 ft AGL elevation atop the Cumberland Plateau in Franklin County. This resulted in minor snow accumulations of an inch or less, mainly in grassy areas.

Ice Storm. Freezing rain produced significant ice accumulations of over 1/2 inch. Liquid equivalents of 1.0-1.1 inches were reported, thus, ice accumulations may have approached 1 inch, especially on elevated objects and surfaces. At least 10,000 residential power outages were reported in Franklin County via broadcast media reports.

Thunderstorm Wind. A strong gust front and associated thunderstorms knocked down trees and powerlines producing power outages. The most widespread damage was in northern Franklin County. Roof damage was reported at a residence on Highway 121 near Winchester.
