Power Outage in Troy, NY

Several trees and power lines were downed on the lower end of the City of Rensselaer.

A tree was downed and laying on a power line on Babcock Lake Road in the Town of Petersburg.

Powerlines were downed along Columbia Turnpike near East Greenbush.

Powerlines, a power pole, and large tree limbs were reported down.

Route 20 was closed at Madison Avenue due to a downed power pole.

A tree and power lines were downed as a result of thunderstorm winds in the town of Stephentown.

Trees were downed onto power lines.

The roof to a residence hall at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute in Troy was reported to be damaged due to thunderstorm winds. Trees and power lines in Troy were also reported to be down as a result of thunderstorm winds.

Trees were reported down on Cooksboro Road in Pittstown due to strong thunderstorm winds. Power outages were also reported.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms developed across the region as a frontal system pushed through. A few of these storms became severe downing trees and power lines. A localized area of widespread straight-line wind damage occurred near Earlton in Greene County downing trees and wires as well as damaging structures.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms developed during the afternoon hours on August 17, 2022 in association with a disturbance off the Northeast US coast. These storms tracked from northeast to southwest. Damage was mainly confined to the Capital Region where a severe thunderstorm downed some trees and power lines across the region. In addition, sub-severe wind gusts led to some flying debris at the New York State Food Festival which was being held in Albany. Event managers cancelled the remainder of the event following the storm.

Amid a hot and humid air mass, showers and thunderstorms developed during the afternoon hours on August 4, 2022. Some thunderstorms became severe producing downed trees and power lines as well as heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding. Flash flooding was mainly confined to the Town of Bethlehem as training thunderstorms produced upwards of 4 inches of rain in just a couple of hours.

Severe thunderstorms developed within a hot and humid air mass across portions of eastern New York, especially for areas south of Interstate 90, during the afternoon and evening hours on July 24, 2022. Widespread wind damage occurred across these areas.||More than 20,000 customers lost power across Ulster and Dutchess counties including in Esopus, Rosendale, Kingston, Saugerties, Wawarsing, Hyde Park, Pleasant Valley and Poughkeepsie. Sporadic pockets of outages also occurred across the Capital Region and into portions of Rensselaer and Columbia counties.

A line of severe thunderstorms with damaging winds pushed through eastern New York during the evening hours of March 7, 2022 resulting in numerous reports of downed trees and power lines. Behind the storms, high winds continued during the late evening of the 7th into the early morning hours of the 8th. Some gusts of 50 to 55 miles per hour were recorded, which resulted in additional downed trees and power lines. Around 13,000 customers lost power in the Albany area, 700 in the Mohawk Valley, 3,000 in the Glens Falls area, and 21,000 in the Mid-Hudson Valley and Catskills. Two schools in the Catskills were closed the following day due to power outages.

The final hot and humid day resulted in another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms, some severe, during the afternoon and early evening hours ahead of an approaching cold front across eastern New York. The main areas impacted from these storms stretched from the Mohawk Valley eastward to the Capital District. Another severe thunderstorm impacted portions of Ulster County. Damaging winds downing trees and power lines were the primary impact, though some large hail was also observed. In addition, locally heavy rainfall from these thunderstorms produced incidents of flash flooding and road closures near Voorheesville and the City of Albany in Albany County.

The continuation of a hot and humid air mass caused the development of another batch of showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon hours across eastern New York, mainly impacting the Capital District. Damaging wind gusts knocked down trees and power lines as a result. Lightning also struck a house on Old Loudonville Road in the Hamlet of Loudonville, causing a fire.

Bands of moderate to heavy rainfall set up across areas north of Interstate 90 during the afternoon and evening hours on Thursday, July 29, 2021 north of a warm front and area of low pressure. Between 2 and 4 inches of rain fell which resulted in several reports of flash flooding. In addition, a few stronger thunderstorms produced some damaging winds, downing trees and power lines. The areas hardest hit from these storms were across Saratoga and Washington counties including the towns of Argyle and Fort Edward. In this corridor, many roads were impassable or washed out from the flooding. Some roads remained closed on Friday, July 30, 2021 and beyond.

Scattered severe thunderstorms moved across eastern New York resulting in trees and powerlines down during the afternoon and evening of the 29th. As a result of the storms, there were 15,000 homes without power in Greene and Columbia counties.

A strengthening low pressure system moving from Ohio to Lake Ontario drew anomalous warmth and moisture northward on Halloween, with temperatures surging into the 60s and 70s over eastern New York and western New England. Showers across the southern Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley became steadier and heavier during the evening ahead of a strong cold front as the low continued to strengthen. Strong winds aloft mixed down to the surface as an intense line of showers developed along the front, resulting in sporadic wind damage and scattered power outages over eastern New York.||A large swath of rainfall totaling 2-5 inches, with isolated areas as high as 7 inches, occurred over the Mohawk Valley and southern Adirondacks, resulting in reports of flash flooding. The runoff caused rapid rises on area creeks and streams, with river gauges reaching record levels along the Mohawk River at Little Falls, the West Canada Creek at Hinckley and Kast Bridge, and the Sacandaga River at Hope. Moderate flooding also occurred on the Hudson River at Fort Edward, Hadley, and North Creek; the Schroon River at Riverbank; and the Mohawk River at Delta Dam. Although river rises and some impacts occurred prior to midnight, the crests occurred on 1 November, and impacts persisted into the first week of November in some areas (see also November StormData). The flooding was extensive over portions of the area, damaging and destroying numerous roads and structures and resulting in water rescues. Between 150 and 200 people were evacuated in Herkimer County. The number of dwellings damaged by the flooding was 344, of which 135 sustained major damage, and 18 were destroyed. There was one fatality as a result of the flooding as a man was swept away by flood waters when he exited his vehicle. ||As a result of the flooding, a major disaster for the state of New York was requested by Governor Cuomo and approved by the President. The monetary damages for public infrastructure requested for the Mohawk Valley and southern Adirondacks totaled around $17 million ($1.2 million for Fulton County, $3.0 million for Hamilton County, $8.8 million for Herkimer County, $0.5 million for Montgomery, $1.6 million for Saratoga, and $1.9 million for Warren). Actual damage amounts were estimated to be even higher by county emergency managers. A state of emergency was declared for Dutchess, Herkimer, Hamilton, Saratoga, and Warren Counties, and boil water notices were issued in Herkimer, Hamilton, and Warren Counties due to floodwater inundation of private and public water systems. The American Red Cross opened shelters to house those displaced by flood damage. ||Other impacts from the flooding and high winds included the cancellation of Amtrak service between Syracuse and Albany due to high water encroaching on train tracks, and portions of the Adirondack Park backcountry becoming impassable due to bridge washouts, high water at stream crossings, and downed trees and debris on trails and at trailheads.

Multiple severe weather hazards occurred during the afternoon and evening hours of Wednesday, August 21st, 2019, due to a strong upper level shortwave moving into a humid and unstable airmass. This set up resulted in multiple severe thunderstorms, flooding and two confirmed tornadoes with damage across much of the region. Over 10,000 people lost power and the Washington County Fair closed for the day.

An upper level disturbance sparked strong to severe thunderstorms, mainly in the Capital District, during the afternoon hours of Friday, August 16th, 2019. These storms resulted in multiple reports of trees and wires down across Albany and Renssselaer counties, with over 12,000 homes and businesses without power. There was also three confirmed microbursts in the Pine Hills neighborhood of Albany, Menands, and North Greenbush.

Scattered thunderstorms developed ahead of a slow-moving cold front during the afternoon and evening of July 27th. The first cluster of storms that developed in the early afternoon produced fairly extensive wind damage over portions of the Capital District in addition to hail up to golf ball size. The wind brought down several large trees onto houses in and around Albany and Troy and damaged an outdoor stage set up on a golf course. Several gravestones were shattered in Albany Rural Cemetery when trees fell on them. More than 5,000 households lost power in Albany County and some were without power for up to 36 hours.||Additional strong to severe storms affected portions of the Catskills, Schoharie and Mohawk Valleys, and Mid Hudson Valley during the afternoon and evening with isolated wind damage.

A hot and humid airmass was in place across the region with temperatures in the 90s and dew points in the 60s and 70s. This resulted in heat index values reaching 100 to 110 degrees during the afternoon hours in valley areas. ||This hot and humid air mass also provided an unstable environment for strong to severe thunderstorms to form ahead of a cold front passage during the afternoon and evening hours of June 18th. The storms caused numerous trees and power lines to be knocked down, resulting in over 10,000 customers without power. A vacant historic building in Poughkeepsie, New York partially collapsed onto an occupied building, trapping and injuring one woman.

After widespread rain moved through overnight associated with a warm front, early clouds gave way to breaks of sun ahead of an approaching cold front and upper level disturbance on Saturday, August 12th. Dewpoints were in the mid to upper 60s throughout the region with strong wind shear in place aloft. The upper level disturbance and an approaching cold front served as main focus for severe weather. ||A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued shortly before 3 PM that afternoon for much of eastern New York. Strong to severe thunderstorms developed and moved through the area during the afternoon and early evening hours. These storms results in multiple reports of trees and power lines down as well as hail.

A fast moving upper level shortwave passed through the area during the afternoon hours on Friday, June 30th, 2017. With a warm and muggy air mass in place, this shortwave sparked off numerous strong to severe thunderstorms, especially across the Mohawk Valley, Saratoga Region and Capital Region. The severe storms produced two EF-1 tornadoes in Fulton and Herkimer counties, as well as knocked down numerous trees and power lines across the region. There was also one report of large hail in Saratoga county. One of the storms also caused four injuries in Schodack, where a fireworks display tent collapsed due to thunderstorm winds. At least 1500 people lost power as a result of the thunderstorms.

A cold front tracked east across eastern New York during the afternoon hours of Monday, June 19th, 2017. With a warm and unstable air mass in place, the frontal passage sparked numerous showers and thunderstorms across the area. Some of these thunderstorm were severe, knocking down trees and power lines. At its peak, there were over 12,000 customers without power across eastern New York, with the bulk of these across Dutchess and Washington Counties.

A warm and unstable air mass was in place over eastern New York ahead of an advancing cold front on Monday, July 18th. Short lines of thunderstorms developed during the early afternoon hours and moved eastward across the region. Some of these thunderstorms became severe, producing damaging wind gusts to trees and power lines. Thunderstorms ended with the passage of the cold front during the evening hours.

A strong area of low pressure was situated over the Great Lakes region on Sunday, July 27th. An upper level shortwave, combined with an approaching warm front, allowed for strong to severe thunderstorms to break out during the afternoon hours on July 27th over the Capital Region. Hail up to half-dollar size was reported, as well as damage to trees and power lines due to gusty thunderstorm winds. ||Some additional thunderstorms occurred during the overnight period on Sunday night, as the storm's warm front lifted across the region. In addition to many cloud to ground lightning strikes and a period of heavy rainfall, strong winds caused damage to trees across parts of Saratoga County. ||As the strong area of low pressure moved across upstate New York on Monday, July 28th, some additional thunderstorms occurred during the afternoon hours. Trees were downed due to thunderstorms winds across parts of Columbia and Dutchess Counties, as the storm's cold front moved through the area. Cooler and less humid air worked into the area behind the front for Monday night, ending the threat for severe weather.

The combination of an approaching cold front and potent upper level jet allowed for some thunderstorms to develop in the late afternoon and early evening hours on Friday, May 30th. A few of these thunderstorms became severe, producing hail to the size of quarters and wind damage to trees and power lines. Thunderstorm activity waned by later in the evening, as the front moved to the east of the region.

Ahead of a strong cold front, a southerly flow allowed for a warm and humid air mass to move into the region. Temperatures were quite warm for early October, with temperatures reaching well into the 60s and 70s. As a cold front moved across the region during the late morning and afternoon hours on October 7th, a line of showers and thunderstorms moved from west to east. Strong winds accompanied these showers and thunderstorms, with widespread reports of trees and power lines downed as a result of the thunderstorm winds leading to power outages. With the passage of the cold front late in the afternoon, the winds switched to a westerly direction as cooler air moved into the region, and the severe threat ended as storms moved eastward and away from the area.||There were around 9,000 power outages across east central New York as a result of the thunderstorms. The hardest hit counties were Columbia, Dutchess and Ulster which accounted for around 6,700 of the outages. Power was restored but to a few hundered by 8 am EDT Friday, October 8th.

A very warm and humid air mass was in place across eastern New York on Tuesday, May 21st. A slow moving frontal boundary was situated just north of the area across the Saint Lawrence River Valley along the United States-Canadian border. During the day, a wave of low pressure moved along this boundary, allowing the boundary to slowly push southward towards the area. With strong wind shear aloft and plenty of low level moisture in place, thunderstorms developed during the early afternoon hours. ||Thunderstorms initially formed as single cells and supercells, but eventually organized into several broken lines, which moved from west to east across the area. Many of these storms produced wind damage to trees and power lines. In addition, some thunderstorms produced hail, with hailstones as large as 2.50 inches in diameter across Columbia County. ||As the surface wave of low pressure moved away and with the loss of daytime heating, thunderstorms eventually ended during the late evening hours.

A significant severe weather event occurred across east central New York on Thursday June 9th. A very warm and humid air mass was in place across the region on the morning of June 9th. A cold front was positioned well to the north and west of the region, toward the Upper Great Lakes. However, a well-defined pre-frontal trough marched across Upstate New York during the morning and afternoon hours. This pre-frontal trough showed up well in observational data, with an abrupt wind shift to the northwest and a sharp drop in dew points. The pre-frontal trough triggered convection, first as a series of discrete storms developing into a broken line, which eventually evolved into an organized line of severe storms known as a severe quasi-linear-convective-system, QLCS. Initially, when the storms were discrete, hail was the main threat. Once the QLCS developed, damaging winds were the main threat. The severe storms resulted in numerous power outages with the large hail denting vehicles.

On September 15, a cold front stretched from low pressure over north central Quebec Province to the Eastern Southern Tier Region of eastern New York. The front drifted slowly southeastward. During the early afternoon, severe thunderstorms in Saratoga and Rensselaer counties knocked down trees and power lines. The Saratoga County thunderstorms produced nickle-sized hail, as noted by a trained spotter.

A strong low pressure system moved out of the Ohio Valley and into the Northeast during the morning of November 25th. Along its associated cold front, thunderstorms brought strong gusty winds, heavy rain and penny-sized hail to much of the area. Damage sustained with the cold front passage included minor traffic accidents, numerous trees down, and widespread power outages to an estimated 4,000 Niagara Mohawk customers.

A line of thunderstorms over western New York formed ahead of a fast-moving cold front on the evening of April 19. These storms raced eastward and held together long enough to produce wind damage as they moved into Herkimer, Saratoga, Washington and Rensselaer Counties of eastern New York. A large tree toppled some wires in the town of Mohawk, Herkimer County. Winds, estimated to have gusted to between 60 and 70 mph, blew a roof off of a mobile home in Greenfield, Saratoga County. Also in Saratoga County, were numerous reports of trees and scattered power lines down in the towns of Clifton Park, Gansevoort, Victory Mills, Vischer Ferry,Miton and Wilton. The line of storms then moved into Washington County and knocked down trees in the town of Greenwhich. The line of storms also moved across portions of Rensselaer County where strong wind gusts blew down wires in towns of Schodack and North Greenbush.

A strong cold front moved across eastern New York during the afternoon of August 22. Scattered thunderstorms developed ahead of the front. A few of these became severe. A severe thunderstorm produced wind gusts that brought down powerlines in the city of Troy in Rensselaer County, which resulted in sporadic power losses. Another storm became severe in Columbia County as winds from it knocked down trees in Copake. More trees and power lines fell on the train tracks in Germantown. Lightning from the same storm struck a cross on top of the church in Hudson, partially destroying it.

Scattered thunderstorms developed on the afternoon of August 1 in the upper Hudson Valley and quickly moved southward. Two of the storms became briefly severe. A wind gust was clocked at 61 mph at the Warren County Airport in Glens Falls, Warren County. The same storm in Queensbury, near Lake George, Warren County, drove a large oak tree into power lines, toppling them as well as hitting two cars nearby. Another tree in the same town, fell onto exit 20 of the Adirondack Northway causing traffic to come to a complete halt. Later that afternoon, a seperate storm produced wind damage as a 20x40 section of a roof was blown off a boat club facility in the town of Castleton on Hudson in Rensselaer County. Winds with that storm were estimated up to 70 mph. Lightning from a thunderstorm also hit the Hudson Area Library, in Columbia County, causing minor damage to the chimney of the over 200 year old structure.

A cold front, working southeast across the Empire State, triggered a broken line of thunderstorms across eastern New York during the midday hours of July 23. Since the air mass ahead of the front was hot and humid, and winds aloft rather strong, some of the storms became severe. Thunderstorm winds produced tree damage in at least one place in Montgomery, Albany, Saratoga and Ulster Counties. In Coxsackie, Green County, in addition to small trees being blown down, thunderstorm winds blew a roof off a trailer. In the town of Hillsdale, Columbia County, several trees and some wires were blown down. One tree fell on a car. In Ulster Heights, Ulster County, a large tree fell on a tree house, destroying it. In Dutchess County, a microburst up to 50 yards wide knocked down many trees in the town of Millerton. One large tree fell on a house. Also in Dutchess County, more trees and wires were blown down in the town of Poughkeepsie. One of the trees blown down was a 120-foot high tree, planted by Samuel Morse in 1860. The storms knocked out power to 13,500 customers in eastern New York, with 12,000 of those in Dutchess County alone.

A cold front, plowing into an unstable airmass, triggered widespread thunderstorms across eastern New York on the evening of Independence Day. Some of the storms became strong to locally severe. Thunderstorm winds brought trees and wires down at both Malta and Schuylerville, Saratoga County. One tree was blown onto a Schuylerville house. Dime size hail also fell in Schuylerville. In Washington County, thunderstorm winds knocked down trees in Middle Falls and Salem. Also in Washington County, trees were blown down along Route 372 between Greenwich and Cambridge. Large tree limbs fell on two cars in the city of Albany. In Rensselaer County, large tree limbs and power lines were brought down in the towns of Speigletown, Schaghticoke and Eagle Mills. Lightning struck a house in Schaghticoke producing minor damage and and at least one injury. Torrential thunderstorm rains triggered a mudslide on Route 9P near Brown Road, in the town of Stillwater, closing Route 9P near Saratoga Lake between Brown Road and Cedar Bluff Road.

A strong upper level disturbance and a surface front, combined to produce numerous thunderstorms across eastern New York during the morning hours of June 3. A few of thunderstorms became severe as they worked across the Mid Hudson Valley and east into the Taconics. Golf ball size hail was reported in Kingston, Ulster County, producing damage to numerous cars. Golf ball size hail was also reported at Glenerie Falls in Columbia County. Thunderstorm winds brought trees down in Tivoli, Dutchess County . A microburst in Clermont, Columbia County, with winds estimated to be between 60 and 70 mph, destroyed a 4,200 square-foot-shed and ripped two roofs off barns of a farm. Storms produced scattered downed trees between Schodack and Sand Lake in Rensselaer County. There were also scattered reports of downed trees in Southern Washington County around Greenwhich. Pea-sized hail produced damage to at least four fruit farms in northwestern Dutchess County, specifically in the Tivoli - Red Hook area. The storms also temporarily knocked out power to around 2,400 customers in the Mid Hudson Valley, with most of them located in northern Dutchess and southeastern Ulster counties. Lightning from the storms set an apartment roof on fire in Kingston. Damage from the fire was limited to the roof and a hallway of the building. Lightning also brought down a high voltage wire onto the Adirondack Northway near Exit 20 in the town of Queensbury, Warren County. This downed wire caused a trench to be burnt into the road which resulted in the highway completly closing for a couple of hours between exit 19 and exit 20. 300 more customers lost power for a while in the Queensbury, Glens Falls area. Heavy rains from the thunderstorms caused the Green River to reach or slightly exceed bankful. One resident had to evacuate his home. Some flooding was also reported on Tory Hill and Old Town roads in Hillsdale.

Thunderstorms developed along a stalled boundary across eastern New York late on August 9. Aided by a very humid, unstable airmass and a strong disturbance aloft, some of these became severe. A lone thunderstorm produced dime-sized hail at Summit, Schoharie county. Thunderstorms produced dime-size hail in Stephentown, Rensselaer county. Then about an hour later, the same spotter in Stephentown reported another thunderstorm with nickle-size hail, followed by quarter-size hail, as well as trees and powerlines blown down. Also in Rensselaer county, large limbs and wires were blown down at Schodack Center. Many trees were knocked down at Coeymans Hollow in Albany county. The wind moved a calf shelter a quarter of a mile. Hail of undetermined size destroyed 70 acres of corn. The brunt of the damage came from a line of storms moving across Ulster and especially Dutchess counties. These storms produced a series of downbursts, which began in eastern Ulster county, then migrated to western Dutchess county. A microburst downed a large swath of trees and wires in both Plattenkill and the Wallkill section of Shawangunk. Supervisors of both towns declared States of Emergency. More trees were reported down in the town of Marlboro. Another microburst, about half a mile long and a mile wide, destroyed many trees in the Red Oaks Mill community, as well as Vassar and Spackenkill Roads, all located in the town of Poughkeepsie, Dutchess county . This area is collectively called the 2nd Ward and was considered devastated. Trees as large as 18 inches in diameter were snapped. Large trees crushed portions of several houses. Bits of leaves were embedded in the vinyl siding of houses. Trees fell through roofs of several houses and destroyed numerous cars. Many roads, including Vassar Road, were completely blocked and thus closed. A National Weather Service storm survey team, estimated the winds gusted as high as 120 miles an hour in the 2nd Ward. A weather spotter reported dime-size hail with the storms, and a person interviewed by the Survey Team, reported half -dollar-size hail. Planes were tossed around at the Dutchess County Airport. Further east in Dutchess county, another larger downburst downed many more trees in the Town of Lagrange near State Highway Route 376. Three houses were reported destroyed in the town itself with many trees down. Broader, less continous tree damage was observed up to four miles east, to the Taconic Parkway, where trees fell down onto the highway itself, forcing a temporary closing of the highway. Both Lagrange and the Town of Poughkeepsie were declared States of Emergency for several days. Up to twenty homes in Dutchess county were reported destroyed, while an additional 123 reported some damage due to the storms. Electrical power was knocked out to 20,000 residents in Ulster and Dutchess counties.

Slow-moving thunderstorms erupted within a very tropical airmass over southern Saratoga county during the afternoon of August 2. Storms not only moved slowly, but redeveloped over the same region and produced very heavy amounts of rainfall in a short period of time. 3.60 inches of rain was reported by an off-duty meteorologist in Clifton Park. Doppler radar estimated up to 6 inches falling in the vicinity. The axis of heaviest rain fell across Mechanicville, the town of Clifton Park and Half Moon. The result was flash flooding in these areas. Toller Road in Clifton Park was under 7 feet of water. Tallmadge Park was under water, forcing a concert scheduled to be played later that evening to be cancelled. The parking lot at the Clifton Country Mall, also in Clifton Park, was completely flooded with several feet of water. Flooding closed roads in Mechnicville and basements were flooded. A twenty-foot-wide section of rail bedding was washed away near U.S. Highway Route 4. In Halfmoon, Route 4 was closed due to flooding. A portion of Pryun Hill Road, which leads to Mechanicville High School, was washed away and the black-top buckled. The water rushed across the road so hard and fast, that trees even became uprooted. Water on the Adirondack Northway (Interstate-87) closed up to two out of the three lanes in both directions, snarling traffic in the town of Clifton Park. The heavy rainfall caused about 500 customers to be without power for around an hour. Nassua Lake overflowed in Rensselaer county, causing rapid flooding in a nearby basement. This flooding led to the explosion of an oil burner, resulting in an oil spill. Lightning from a thunderstorm struck a tree on the SUNY-Albany Campus. Five University at Albany police officers were close enough to feel the effects of the indirect strike. All were very mildly shocked but escaped serious injuries.

A stalled frontal boundary across eastern New York interacted with a strong upper level disturbance on July 15. The result was a slow-moving low pressure area that formed over Virginia. This low pumped a deep layer of tropical air into the region and resulted in the second widespread heavy rainstorm of the summer. The 3.23 inch rainfall on July 15 at Albany International Airport surpassed the old rainfall record of 1.41 inches set in 1945. Even heavier rain fell across the Mohawk Valley and Catskills. 4.43 inches of rain fell at East Chatham, Columbia County and 5.72 inches at Berlin in Rensselaer County. Exceptional 24-hour rainfall totals included 9.85 inches at Boiceville and 11.97 inches at West Shokan, both located in Ulster County. However, these totals included the heavy rain which fell the previous night. The excessive rains resulted in flooding and flash flooding across Albany, Ulster, Rensselaer and, especially ,Columbia Counties. In Albany County, U.S. Route 9 was closed in Latham, State Route 5 (Central Avenue) was closed in Albany, and Sand Creek Road was closed in Colonie. Many other roads were flooded. In the village of Menands, as well as other areas of eastern Colonie, the rains forced authorities to evacuate several homes with waterlogged basements. The heavy rains also caused futher deterioration along the banks of the Normans Kill near State County Route 443 (Delaware Avenue) on the Delmar-Albany line. In Rensselaer County a state of emergency was declared in the city of Rensselaer. The worst hit area in that city was The Hollow where many places were flooded. A man had to be evacuated by boat from his house. Meanwhile, the city's pumping equipment was damaged. Rapid movement of water uprooted trees. Severe flood damage resulted in the loss of power, natural gas, and water to many streets in Rensselaer. Roads also flooded in Schodack and were closed in Nassau. Six roads were impassable in East Greenbush and several homes were endangered by rising water. Areas of Ulster County, not fully recovered from Friday's flood, had additional flooding Saturday. County Route 101 was made impassable due to water in Olivebridge. All of Columbia County was declared in a state of emergency late Saturday through the mid-morning hours of Wednesday. Small streams overflowed at Red Rock, Austerlitz and Ancram. Residents became trapped in a home on Clark Road in Red Rock as firemen had to give up attempting to rescue them due to quick rising water. The residents were not hurt. In Kinderhook, the Kinderhook Creek overflowed its banks early Sunday morning onto U.S. Route 9. The water flooded the nearby Kinderhook Animal Hospital as well as McCagg Road. In Copake, floods closed Lackawanna, Trout Brook and Twin Bridges Roads. Chatham was by far, the hardest hit community in Columbia County. Forty roads had to be closed along with two bridges due to flooding waters. Ninety percent of the roads in that town were damaged from the floods. One commercial building was completely washed away. A farm foundation on Clark Road was also washed away. An estimated 5.5 miles of roadways were completely destroyed. In the Town of Ghent, The Kline Kill rose rapidly, picking up a nearby house on County Route 9, then setting it back down off kilter on its pilings. The house was seriously damaged. A house in Austerliz was flooded by the Punsit Creek by as much as four feet. The owner's car was completely submerged. A farm was also inundated by the Kline Kill, ruining much of its produce. At least four roads were washed out in Hillsdale. The heavy rains resulted in a significant rise of the Mohawk River. The river went a little more than a foot above flood stage at Tribes Hill for about twenty four hours. There was no river flood damage reported to the National Weather Service.

A cold front interacted with a very warm humid air mass to produce a round of strong to locally severe storms across portions of eastern New York. Thunderstorm winds blew down trees in Brunswick, Berlin, Tomhannock and especially Grafton Lake in Rensselaer county. In Tomhannock, 10 trees were uprooted near the reservoir with two trees falling on houses. Wind gusts were estimated to be in the 60 to 100 mph range at Grafton State Park, which not only resulted uprooted many trees but damaged camps and year-round houses. Power lines were downed as well. Thunderstorms produced damage at Livingston, Columbia county with trees down. Wind damage was noted at Tivoli in Dutchess county. Trees fell on an automobile there. Trees were downed by thunderstorm winds in Kingston. Lightning struck a house, setting the roof and attic on fire on West O'Reilly Street, Kingston. The damage to the house was minimal. Trees fell on wires in the city of Poughkeepsie. Thunderstorms knocked out power to 3,000 customers in the Mid Hudson Valley.

A broken line of showers and thunderstorms developed ahead of a cold front late on May 24. A couple of the thunderstorm cells became strong to locally severe. Dime-size hail fell in Delmar, Albany county. A few trees and power lines were blown down in East Greenbush, Rensselaer county.

On May 10, eastern New York was sandwiched between two frontal boundaries during much of the day. The air mass was very unstable which resulted in numerous single and multi-cell thunderstorms throughout much of the day. Due to cold air aloft, and cool air near the surface, many of the thunderstorms produced hail ranging from dime to walnut size. The largest hail was reported in Tivoli, Dutchess county. The dime size hail near Saugerties, Ulster county, produced small dents on some cars. Lightning struck two separate individuals during the morning hours. A female located at the intersection of State Route 5 and Old Karner road, was struck in her car in Colonie, Albany county. Another female, carrying an umbrella, was struck at a local bus depot, also in the town of Colonie. Both of the women suffered only minor injuries. Lightning strikes also produced fires in homes in Connelly and West Hurley in Ulster county, as well as a garage in Germantown, Columbia county. A tree initially caught fire. The fire spread to the home in Connelly which was badly damaged. Lightning started a shed on fire in West Hurley , that spread to an adjacent house, producing significant damage. Only the roof on the shed was damaged. Lightning briefly knocked out power to as many as 20,000 customers in the Mid Hudson Valley area. Thunderstorms trained over Herkimer county, producing rainfall amounts up to 4 inches during the course of the day. The torrential rain swelled the drainage facilities in Middleville and produced flash flooding. A culvert under Park Street near Reservoir Road became clogged with debris, and resulted in the runoff flooding the road and cellars nearby. A few residents were forced to evacuate their homes.
