Tunica Power Outages Caused by Weather

Straight-line winds snapped trees in a swath from near the Mississippi River at Mhoon Landing Parkway across Highway 61 to Kirby Road. The tops of two power poles were removed or tilted.
A tornado formed just northeast of the Tunica airport and tracked northeast through rural Tunica and Desoto counties. A large number of homes and a church a few miles northeast of the airport suffered roof damage. Several sheds were displaced and destroyed. There was consistent damage for over 20 miles before lifting in DeSoto County, mainly snapped and uprooted trees. A few homes and mobile homes along Highway 3 south of Arkabutla Dam Road had shingles removed or portions of the metal roofing lifted. There were a number of trees snapped and uprooted along Highway 3 and in a wooded area along Woffolk Road. Several power poles were snapped and numerous trees along Arkabutla Dam Road near the Desoto County line. The roof was removed from a garage/carport. A couple of other nearby homes received roof damage. The tornado then moved into DeSoto County. Peak winds in Tunica County were estimated at 110 mph.

An arctic cold front pushed into the Mid-South during the day on March 2nd, 2014. Arctic air funneled into the Mississippi Delta. Overrunning precipitation fell through the shallow arctic airmass which produced freezing rain, sleet and snow. Thunder occurred with the precipitation as well. As a result, major ice accumulations of a quarter to a half inch of ice fell across extreme Northwest Mississippi. Up to a half inch of sleet with up to an inch of snow also fell. The winter precipitation tapered off during the early morning hours of March 3rd. The ice, sleet, and snow accumulations produced hazardous roads resulting in numerous accidents. Power lines and trees fell due to heavy ice accumulations as well resulting in major power outages.
An arctic cold front plunged into the Mid-South on February 2nd, 2014. The front stalled out as an area of low pressure developed along the front. As a result...precipitation changed over to freezing rain across portions of Tunica County as arctic air plunged into the Mississippi Delta. Trace amounts of ice fell across Northwest Tunica County covering trees and power lines.
Precipitation ahead of a warm front fell in the form of freezing rain and sleet during the evening hours of January 5th, 2009 into the early morning hours of January 6th, 2009. Ice accumulations were around a tenth of an inch in portions of Northwest Mississippi. Trees and power lines were covered and some power outages occurred. Roads were slick and several accidents were reported.
