A powerful upper level storm system along with a rapidly deepening surface low over Kentucky produced a QLCS over Mississippi that entered west Alabama during the morning hours on March 3rd. A warm layer aloft hindered the strength of updrafts along the convective line, but a strong pressure gradient resulted in numerous uprooted trees due to non-thunderstorm wind gusts.

January 10, 2013

A weakening cold front pushed into west Central Alabama during the late afternoon on Thursday, January 10. Even though showers and isolated thunderstorms organized into a quasi linear convective system (QLCS), mid and upper level dynamics were weakening and severe weather was not expected. A wake low developed along the back edge of the rain area across west Central Alabama, resulting 40-55 mph winds and significant wind damage in this area. Trees and power lines were downed, with minor structural damage, across numerous locations in Sumter, Greene, Tuscaloosa, Pickens, Lamar, Hale and Jefferson counties.

November 30, 2010

A powerful late fall storm system, and associated cold frontal passage through Alabama, brought widespread thunderstorms to the state. Some of the storms in Central Alabama produced damaging winds and tornadoes.

September 25, 2005

The parent thunderstorm that produced the tornado on the west side of Lake Lurleen re-organized and developed another tornado on the east side of the lake. The tornado touched down just west of Lake Lurleen Road near the southern end of the lake at approximately 419 PM CDT. The tornado produced light tree damage near the east side of the lake. The tornado continued northeast where it strengthened as it neared State Highway 171. Numerous trees and power lines were knocked down in this area and the highway was temporarily closed. The tornado lifted shortly after it crossed the highway around 426 PM CDT. A few structures along the path suffered minor damage. The tornado damage path was 5.8 miles long and 100 yards wide at its widest point. This tornado was produced by the remnants of Hurricane Rita. Begin: 33 17.05/87 40.76 End: 33 21.74/87 38.86

July 25, 2004

Penny size hail was observed in the City of Northport. Several trees were reported down along SR 171 and along SR 69. Thousands of customers were temporarily without power following the storm.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
