Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Yoakum County
High Wind. Severe winds developed over portions of southern Yoakum County as pressure gradients increased dramatically in the wake of a departing convective complex around 22:00 CST on the 17th. The Texas Tech University West Texas Mesonet site near Denver City recorded 64 mph and 70 mph gusts between 21:50 CST and 22:00 CST. Local newspaper reports indicated that an old oak tree at Yoakum County Park was split by the winds, and that at least six power lines were downed. A local utility company reported power outages to twelve households. No injuries were reported.

Thunderstorm Wind. A swath of extreme winds accompanied a bowing line-shaped convective complex as it moved southward over portions of Yoakum and Terry Counties during the late evening hours of the 26th. Severe winds initiated over central Yoakum County as measured by the Texas Tech University West Texas Mesonet site near Plains where a 62 mph gust was recorded at 20:45 CST. A cattle feed lot located on the New Mexico and Texas state line in western Yoakum County measured a peak gust of 81 mph according to newspaper accounts.||Damage to utility poles, lines, and trees was widespread. Numerous power poles were snapped along Farm to Market Road 213. Some minor crop damage occurred due to sandblasting. No significant structural damage was reported.||Law enforcement officials reported damage in and near Denver City when the winds spread south across southern Yoakum County. Winds estimated up to 70 mph reportedly occurred in the city between 21:10 and 21:15 CST. A number of power poles were snapped by the winds.

High Wind. The Texas Tech West Texas Mesonet recorded a total of seven severe wind gusts across the South Plains region during the daytime hours on the 12th. The high westerly winds, with gusts up to 62 MPH, blew dust and smoke from ongoing wildfires over much of the region. The visibilities were dramatically reduced during much of the afternoon. Minor roof damage to several homes was reported in Lubbock and a few power lines were additionally blown down by the winds.
