Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Collingsworth County

Tornado. The tornado touched down just southside Dodson and moved across|the south side of town before moving across open fields to the|Oklahoma border. The tornado was relatively wide and exhibited|some signs of being multi vortex on storm chaser video, but|estimated wind speeds were only high end EF0. Along the path,|there were numerous large tree limbs snapped and a few uprooted|trees. There was damage to roofs and porches of several homes and|some weak out buildings were destroyed. One unanchored travel|trailer was rolled 40 feet and destroyed as well. There were a|few isolated power poles broken, but most remained standing along|the tornado path. The tornado did cross the county line and continued into Harmon County Oklahoma for a short distance.

Winter Storm. A combination sleet and freezing rain led to light ice accumulations which caused hazardous driving conditions the morning of Monday, October 26th. Additional precipitation events led to overall sleet and snow pellet accumulations of one inch by Tuesday morning, October 27th. This was reported by law enforcement with very poor driving conditions. Later on in the day on the 27th, another round of precipitation in the form of freezing rain caused havoc on roads and powerlines. Several areas lost power with 0.5 to 0.75 inches of ice on surfaces to include trees and powerlines.

Thunderstorm Wind. Local officials reported a roof blown off of a building as well as several power poles down.

The Mill Iron Wildfire began about five miles northeast of Wellington Texas in Collingsworth County around 1200CST. The wildfire consumed twenty-six thousand nine hundred and seventy-nine acres and was caused by downed power lines. There were three homes and three other structures threatened, but there were no reports of any homes or other structures damaged or destroyed. There were also no reports of any injuries or fatalities. The wildfire was contained around 0300CST on April 14. The Texas A&M Forest Service responded to the wildfire.
