Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Fredericksburg County

A cold front approached the Mid Atlantic during the evening of June 3. Warm, moist and unstable air developed ahead of the front, allowing scattered strong to severe thunderstorms to develop. Several reports of downed trees and power lines were received. A roof was also blown off a house in Warrenton. One thunderstorm produced heavy rainfall that resulted in flash flooding in Mitchells in Culpeper County.

A strong upper level disturbance moved across the Mid Atlantic during the afternoon and evening hours of June 1st. This system along with high dew points and an unstable atmosphere sparked scattered strong to severe thunderstorms. A few thunderstorms resulted in downed trees and power lines. One thunderstorm also produced penny sized hail in Culpeper County.

A strong cold front move through the region on the 7th. Numerous showers and very strong thunderstormsaccompanied the front. The thunderstorms produced widespread damage in the Piedmont region of Northern Virginia. Significant damage was reported in northwest King George, east Stafford, and northeast Spotsylvania Counties. In King George County, an F1 tornado touched down near Shiloh. At least a dozen dwelling, and 10 boats were damaged. The boats were stored in dry dock in the Waugh Marina. Several trees were also uprooted or topped out along the storms three mile path. In Stafford County, 80 to 90 mph winds destroyed two homes caused major damage to twenty others. The Japazawas Subdivision Eastern Stafford County had about 40 felled trees. Three Amtrak trains were stalled between the Chatham area of Stafford and Fredericksburg due to downed trees and power lines. Finally, in the City of Spotsylvania, Spotsylvania County, the main stage at the re-enactment of the Battle of Spotsylvania collapsed due to strong winds. A number of tents and a couple of portable toilets were also blown over.

Scattered thunderstorms with frequent lightning and high winds moved through Spotsylvania and King George counties between 3:30 and 5 PM EDT. In Spotsylvania County, trees and power lines were downed, mainly in and around Fredericksburg. On tree fell onto a home on Parker Street. A spotter in Fredericksburg estimated 55 MPH winds with the storm. Several Spotsylvania County structure fires were attributed to the frequent lightning that accompanied the storm. In King George County, a few trees were downed and a few power outages were reported in King George.
