Power Outage in Weatherford, OK

Freezing rain prevailed through the event with widespread 1/3 to 1/2 inch ice accumulations on trees, power lines and other elevated surfaces.

The damage began a few miles south and west of Weatherford. Numerous power poles were blown down as the wind approached Weatherford. Two semi-tractor trailers and two automobiles were blown off of I-40 near mile mark 80. A little south of Weatherford, 30 to 40 power poles were downed, transformers were blown, and larger tree branches were snapped. Some minor damage was also reported to the wind farm near Weatherford. Monetary damage estimates were not available.

Seven high voltage transmission structures were destroyed, with an additional 30 large wooden power poles were destroyed. Several hundred residents were without power for several hours. Large trees, some of which were 15 to 20 foot tall and a foot-and-a-half wide were uprooted or snapped. A two-story house was also partially blown off of its foundation. Monetary damage estimates were not available.

Sustained severe winds caused widespread damage over parts of Weatherford. Four well constructed roofs were heavily damaged. Four windows were broken out. Three signs sustained damage, with the Best Western sign completely destroyed. Numerous other trees, power lines, and fences were downed. The winds were accompanied by torrential rainfall and penny size hail. Monetary damages were estimated.

Three semis were overturned on Interstate 40, and one of the drivers was injured. Five thousand square feet of the roof at Walmart was blown off. Numerous homes and businesses had windows broken. A porch was destroyed, and a local fire department recorded a wind gusts of 88 mph, resulting in a broken glass door and roof damage. On the southeast side of Weatherford, road signs and power poles were downed, while on the east side of Weatherford, a trailer was overturned.
