Power Outage in West Point, NE

Emergency manager reported power lines blown down.

A tornado developed in a field near 3rd road south of C road and quickly moved northeast to cause roof damage to large animal barns where a substantial amount of roofing tin were removed. The tornado proceeded across open fields before severely impacting a farm near 4th and E road. The farm place had a small shed blown approximately 100 yards. A second brand new larger shed was completely destroyed and a very large shed with equipment inside was also completely destroyed. There was minor roof and siding damage to the home and to another large shed, as well as some fences. The tornado proceeded northeast to another hog farm where it removed large sections of roof from two large barns. The debris were deposited well into a field downstream. The track was then intermittent for 1.5 miles as there were few if any available damage indicators in ag fields before it caused additional damage to 5 power poles and another animal barn where much of the barn was removed and blown into the nearby trees. The tornado appeared to dissipate at that point.

Numerous trees and tree limbs were downed in town, some onto power lines. Law enforcement estimated wind gusts to near 70 mph.

Thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at over 60 mph knocked power lines down causing loss of power to parts of town.

Freezing rain accumulated between 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch over much of the county. Although winds weren't particularly strong, the weight of the ice caused scattered tree damage and downed power lines and broke power poles. Cuming County Public Power District stated that the damage to power lines and power poles was major. An estimated 1,500 customers lost power, some of which remained without power until the 25th. Some schools also closed.

Rain changed briefly to a period of freezing rain then to a heavy wet snow in the late evening of April 4th with snow continuing into the mid morning hours of the 5th. The precipitation was accompanied by north winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Although snowfall ended during the late morning of the 5th, the strong winds caused continued drifting snow in open areas into the afternoon hours. Snowfall amounts were between 2 and 6 inches across the county based on reports from surrounding counties and satellite pictures taken the next day. The ice and heavy wet snow and strong winds snapped power poles south of the county but some lines were downed causing power outages in the West Point, Wisner and Bancroft areas. Travel was also very difficult.

Thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at between 70 and 75 mph downed trees and power lines in numerous locations across the county. West Point was especially hard hit with numerous trees downed causing damage to fences, vehicles and some buildings in town.
