Low pressure tracked from the Lower Mississippi Valley on the morning of the 3rd towards the northeast U.S. coast on the morning of the 4th. Although the best potential for damaging wind gusts was in southwest Pennsylvania, some strong wind gusts and damage were noted in northern West Virginia, particularly Preston and Tucker Counties, due to a strong pressure gradient. Wind gusts of up to 69 MPH were measured on the peaks of eastern Tucker during the early morning hours of the 4th, and areas of widespread tree and power line damage were received from both counties. More isolated incidents were noted in other West Virginia counties.

July 23, 2022

A more widespread wind damage event finally occurred on July 23rd. A quasi-linear mesoscale convective system, originating over Illinois and Indiana, continued into a warm, moist, and unstable air mass over the Upper Ohio Valley. The line of storms crossed northern West Virginia during the early to middle afternoon hours. Although damage was more widespread to the north, several instances of wind damage to trees and power lines resulted from the storms.

High winds blew down trees and power lines in Newell, Dallas, Moundsville, Hundred, Worthington, and Kingwood.

December 14, 2001

December 12, 2000

A strengthening area of low pressure and associated cold front swept across the area during the overnight hours, bringing high winds across portions of northern West Virginia. The control tower at the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport recorded a 76 MPH wind gust. In general, damage across the area was confined to downed trees and power lines.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);

  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
