Episodes

September 30, 2022

Remnants of Hurricane Ian moved north-northwest from the South Carolina coast into the Virginia Piedmont and Southside counties. Ian was classified as a post-tropical system by the time it reached central and southwest Virginia during the late hours of September 30th, 2022. Strong low level shear and abundant tropical moisture brought strong winds to much of the area, resulting in thousands of power outages and many downed trees. The remnants of Ian continued to impact the area overnight through the morning hours of October 1, 2022.

March 31, 2022

Winds increased significantly both in advance and behind a potent cold front that crossed the area the evening of the 30th into the morning of the 31st. High winds downed a large amount of trees over portions of Tazewell and Smyth Counties. Power lines also came down as a result of the wind, or of the falling trees, in Tazewell County. A roof was blown off a roof in Tazewell county, and shingles were blown off a house in Carroll County.

August 17, 2021

Remnants of Tropical Storm Fred moved north from the Gulf Coast states into the Central Appalachians. Strong low level shear, and abundant tropical moisture sparked a few low topped severe thunderstorms in southwest Virginia. These thunderstorms produced damaging winds during the late evening hours of the 17th into the early morning hours of the 18th. Nearly 5,000 people lost power in southwest Virginia due to these winds. In addition, a south to southeast flow of high tropical moisture allowed for several inches of rain to fall over portions of our area, with over five inches of rain measured in Carroll and Patrick counties.

October 31, 2019

An approaching cold front brought a squall line across southwest Virginia during the afternoon and evening hours. Severe thunderstorms within this line combined with high winds aloft to produce damaging winds that blew down trees and power lines.

April 22, 2015

Strong winds gusted between roughly 30 and 50 mph across parts of southwest Virginia during the late morning and afternoon hours. While these winds were not in the typical range that would prompt trees to be blown down, recent rains on April 20th helped yield a moist ground that allowed trees to come down more easily. In Lynchburg, a fallen tree landed on a parked car. In Carroll County, a large oak tree came down on Riverhill Road near Riverhill Church. The greatest abundance of trees fell in Franklin County. Trees came down in or near the communities of Hardy, Rocky Mount, Ferrum, and Henry. Some of these trees blocked roads, and one tree, as it fell, brought down a power line.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);

  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
