Episodes
A very moist, tropical air mass was in place over Oklahoma for several days of early July. Late on the 4th, a weak trough entered parts of southwest Oklahoma, with widespread precipitation developing along and just ahead of it. Intense rainfall developed over southwest Oklahoma, especially over Hobart early, and then east toward Caddo county later in the morning. Flash flooding quickly became a concern, as several roadways became flooded. Later in the afternoon, a stronger upper level disturbance moved across the central plains, with a weak cold front entering northwest Oklahoma. Thunderstorms developed along this boundary by mid afternoon and moved east into north-central Oklahoma. Slightly better instability allowed for some of these thunderstorms to become severe, as strong winds north of Woodward caused some minor power pole damage. The thunderstorms moved into south-central Kansas by late afternoon.
A dry line set up over the eastern panhandles during the afternoon, with dew point temperatures in the middle to upper 60s east of the boundary. Afternoon heating and lift from an upper level disturbance allowed for thunderstorms to develop east of the dry line. The thunderstorms moved into western and northwestern Oklahoma by the afternoon, mainly north of Interstate 40. Supercell thunderstorms dropped very large hail as they moved northeast toward the Kansas border. Another cluster of thunderstorms moved northeast toward parts of central and northern Oklahoma. Large hail up to golf ball size, damaging winds near 70 mph, and very heavy rainfall were reported with the complex. Damage to trees and power lines was reported as the thunderstorms passed. The thunderstorms finally moved into Kansas during the late night hours. Monetary damages were estimated.
A powerful storm system developed over the lee of the Rockies and moved northeast into the Midwestern United States. A trailing dry line moved into western Oklahoma, with thunderstorms developing along it during the late afternoon hours. The severe thunderstorms continued into the late evening hours, producing large hail up to golf ball size and severe wind gusts. The 3 counties that were affected were Greer, Woodward, and Ellis counties.

What Causes Power Outages?
- Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.
What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
- Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
- Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
- Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
