Wytheville Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Several trees and powerlines were downed by thunderstorm winds through the county.
Skywarn-trained weather spotters and members of the general public observed ice accumulations from freezing rain ranging from 0.25 to 0.3 inches in thickness across portions of Wythe County, including around the communities of Wytheville and Coleman Store. Sleet accumulations of 1 inch were also observed near the community of Rural Retreat. The icing resulted in at least 1,125 known power outages within the county. Key impacts: power outages; hazardous travel conditions; tree damage; schools closed.
Skywarn-trained weather spotters and members of the general public observed ice accumulations ranging from 0.15 to 0.2 inches in thickness across portions of Wythe County, as well as modest sleet accumulations of up to 0.2 inches. The icing resulted in at least 828 power outages. Multiple trees and tree limbs were also brought down by the weight of the icing. Virginia State Police responded to calls for 12 disabled vehicles and at least 25 traffic crashes caused by the hazardous road conditions in Wythe County and the surrounding region. No fatalities were reported. Key impacts: power outages; hazardous travel conditions; automobile accidents.
Ice accretion totals across the county ranged from 0.20 inches one mile north of Wytheville to 0.25 inches four miles west-southwest of Coleman Store. Power was out for 1,791 customers in Wythe County early in the afternoon of November 15th.
Episodes
A squall line along and ahead of a cold front moved across Southwest Virginia during the evening of February 11th. Some of the showers and storms along this line produced damaging winds which downed trees and power lines.
