Youngstown Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Two large trees downed and power poles snapped in Poland, about a half mile north of the center of town.
An Arctic cold front swept through the area around 4 AM December 23rd. Low pressure along this front tracked over Lake Erie early in the morning on December 23rd and rapidly intensified through the day while slowly lifting northeast across Ontario. With the frontal passage rain changed to snow with temperatures dropping from the upper 30s and lower 40s to sub-zero in about 8 hours. A period of light to moderate snow occurred behind the front early December 23rd before becoming lighter by midday. The period of snow and rapidly falling temperatures led to a flash freeze and icy conditions on area roadways. While the falling snow became lighter through the daytime hours of December 23rd, winds began increasing during the pre-dawn hours and gusted over 35 MPH through the day. A peak wind gust of 51 MPH was clocked at 2:32 PM December 23rd at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport. Sporadic tree damage and a few power outages resulted. Wind gusts very gradually subsided into December 24th, though gusts didnt drop below 30 MPH until that evening. This led to a prolonged period of widespread blowing and drifting snow beginning early in the morning December 23rd and continuing through the afternoon and evening, with some patchy blowing and drifting snow continuing all the way through Christmas Eve. The greatest impact from this storm was to travel due to the flash freeze and extensive blowing and drifting snow, to go along with low visibility. Numerous minor accidents, slide-offs and disabled vehicles were reported throughout the area on December 23rd and 24th. Over a dozen of these accidents resulted in at least minor injury. Wind chills plunged below 0 by 7 AM December 23rd and did not warm back above 0 until the morning of December 26th. A minimum wind chill of -31 degrees was reported at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport at 5:51 PM December 23rd. A number of burst pipes were reported across northern Ohio due to this cold, with temperatures remaining in the single digits until Christmas morning. Weather observers at Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport measured 4.3 of snow with the storm. Trained spotters measured 2.6 of snow in Austintown and 2.5 in Canfield.
Downburst blew down about 20 trees and 10 power polls in the same direction in Roosevelt Park in Campbell. Time estimated via radar.
Hitchcock Road closed between Squirrel Hill and Deer Run due to downed tree and power lines in Boardman.
Several trees and power lines were blown down on the east side of Canfield between Canfield Road and Shields Road.
Episodes
An area of low pressure moved from the Gulf Coast up the west side of the Appalachians and across western Pennsylvania on February 15th and 16th bringing the first heavy synoptic snow of the season to northeastern Ohio. The snow spread into southern Mahoning County during the early evening hours and by midnight had reached Ashtabula County. The snow intensified overnight as the low approached Pittsburgh with wet heavy snow falling over the eastern end of Ohio. Visibilities from late evening on the 15th through daybreak on the 16th were less than a mile and at times less than one half mile. The snow quickly ended from west to east during the late morning hours. More than six inches of snow fell east of a line from Portage County to central Ashtabula County. The highest totals were over eastern Mahoning County where 12 inches of snow was reported at Struthers and 10.5 inches reported at Poland. Other peak totals included 8 inches at Diamond in Portage County, 8.5 inches at Warren in Trumbull County with 8 inches at Dorset in Ashtabula County. Officially, 7.5 inches of snow was measured at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Trumbull Airport. Numerous accidents were reported during this event along with a few power outages. Many schools were closed on the 16th.
An area of low pressure moved north across western Ohio on March 18th. A warm front stretching east from the low also lifted north across the region. Rain developed along this front. Temperatures at the onset of the precipitation remained below freezing. A four to six hour period of freezing rain occurred in the Youngstown-Warren area before temperatures warmed. Further north the freezing precipitation lasted for a shorter duration. Up to a third of an inch of ice accumulation was reported in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties with around a quarter inch in Portage and Ashtabula Counties. The ice accumulated mainly on trees and grassy surfaces. Strong southeast winds accompanied the precipitation with gusts as high as 35 mph reported. Some trees and limbs were toppled by the ice and there were also a few reports of power outages. A few accidents were reported.
