Episodes
A cold front moved into the Mid Atlantic during the afternoon of June 16. With a warm moist atmosphere in place, numerous strong to severe thunderstorms developed in the afternoon and evening. Damaging winds that lead to the downing of trees and power lines were common across north central Virginia. Some locations also received severe hail. Near Ruckersville, Virginia, baseball size hail lead to six inches of accumulation.
A strong low pressure system crossed the Mid Atlantic during the afternoon and evening hours of May 8th. This system along with warm temperatures and high dew points triggered numerous strong to severe showers and thunderstorms across the region. Two tornadoes occurred in central Virginia. Several storms produced damaging winds that downed trees and power lines in portions of northern and central Virginia. A few locations reported flooding as storms trained over the same area through the afternoon and evening.
Strong thunderstorms produced widespread wind damage across Northern Virginia on May 25th. One thunderstorm spawned a tornado in Northern Loudoun County, near Lovettsville. The weak tornado topped trees, shredded leaves and spread debris along a two mile track. Straight-line winds downed trees and power lines area wide. At the height of the storms thousands were without power. Some areas were pelted with nickel to half dollar size hail, which dented cars and damaged gardens. Several minor automobile accidents were reported to the 911 Center.
A line of strong to severe thunderstorms moved across the region on the 19th. These storms preceded a cold front and produced gusty, damaging winds and heavy rainfall. Widespread power outages were reported due to downed trees and power lines.
Two severe thunderstorms moved through Northern Virginia during the afternoon of the 7th. One produced a tornado that moved through Fauquier County, and the other produced high winds that downed trees and power lines across the western suburbs of Washington D.C. In Fauquier County, an F0 tornado touched down 3 miles west of Warrenton. It lifted up and down along a 5 mile path before finally dissipating 2 miles southeast of town. The first location where damage was found was in the vicinity of Waterloo Estates. A large tree several feet in diameter was downed on Stonelea Lane. A three-quarter-mile long path of downed trees up to 50 yards wide was surveyed between Stonelea Lane and Fauquier High School. The tornado lifted as it pushed over the high school, but not before damaging a flag pole and athletic field equipment on school grounds. Several people at the high school saw the funnel and took shelter inside the building. The next touchdown was on Culpeper Street, just south of the center of town. Several tree branches were downed there. The tornado lifted off the ground again, but touched down briefly southeast of town near the intersection of Route 643 (Meetze Road) and Poplar Grove Drive. One final touchdown was observed near the intersection of Route 674 (Lunsford Road) and Route 670 (Auburn Road). Both touchdown locations southeast of town had minor tree damage. It is possible that the tornado touched down one more time in the community of Cassanova, about 5 miles southeast of Warrenton. Minor damage was reported at the intersection of Route 602 and 616, but the damage was cleaned up before it could be surveyed. A funnel cloud was spotted two more times with this storm, once near Brent Town in southeast Fauquier County and finally at Quantico in Prince William County. High winds were also produced by the thunderstorm just north and south of the tornado's path. Trees were downed in two locations along Route 802 (Springs Road) about 2 miles southwest of Warrenton. A microburst of wind up to 70 MPH downed several large trees in a small area of eastern Warrenton between Alexandria Pike and Walker Drive. Leaves and twigs were plastered to buildings and siding was damaged in this area as well. This thunderstorm also produced very heavy downpours and pea sized hail over Warrenton. Street and basement flooding was reported as the storm moved through. Small hail and heavy downpours were also reported in Opal.Another thunderstorm produced high winds across the Virginia suburbs of D.C. In Falls Church, a power line was downed onto a moving pickup truck on Westmoreland Drive. Two people were trapped inside the vehicle until firefighters could cut off electricity to the wires. In Fairfax County, power lines were downed onto Woodland Drive in Tyson's Corner. Trees were downed in Vienna. Cloud to ground lightning started a house fire northeast of Mount Vernon and blew transformers in Merrifield and Herndon. In the city of Fairfax, a townhouse and a house both caught fire after being struck by lightning. Scattered trees were downed as well, including one which fell on a car at the intersection of Arlington Boulevard and Dale Road. A wind gust of 46 MPH was recorded in Reston. In Alexandria, power lines were downed in the western end of the city.
Scattered thunderstorms developed during the early afternoon across Northern Virginia. Some of the storms produced damaging winds, very heavy downpours, and frequent lightning. In Greene County, a handful fo lightning fires were reported. A shed was struck and caught fire on Celt Road in Greene. Along Roue 633 in Greene a tree caught on fire after being struck. In addition, lightning struck Brokenback Mountain and caused a 1 acre brush fire. In Albemarle County, lightning started at least 7 brush fire. In Orange County, lightning started an attic fire at a 4-unit apartment building on Oakbrook Drive in Orange. In Spotsylvania County, a home in Paytes was heavily damaged by a lightning fire. A residence on Buchanan Court was damaged by fire after lightning hit a tree and jumped to the gutter of the home. Other lightning strikes caused power outages and damaged a chimney. Heavy downpours flooded roads in Fredericksburg, including River Road which was closed by debris that was deposited on the pavement by rushing water. Pea sized hail was also reported. High winds downed scattered trees and power lines across Spotsylvania County, including a few that fell onto roads in Fredericksburg. In Alexandria, a lightning fire damaged the roof of an apartment building on Duke Street.
Thunderstorms that produced winds in excess of 55 MPH, hail, and heavy downpours moved through a portion of Northern Virginia during the afternoon of the 25th. In Spotsylvania County, downed trees and power lines were downed across a two mile stretch along Route 208 (Blockhouse Road). Trees were also downed in Snell, Spotsylvania Courthouse, and Fredericksburg. Dime sized hail was reported in Fredericksburg and hail between one quarter and one half inch fell in Snell, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Massaponax, and Thornburg. In Stafford County, scattered trees were downed and pea sized hail was reported. In Prince William County, about 4 miles east of Manassas, heavy rainfall caused a large mudslide at the intersection of Bear Drive and Yatesford Road. In Fairfax County, a funnel cloud was spotted at the intersection of Route 7 and Spring Hill Road in Tyson's Corner. Rainfall totals included 2.50 inches in Vienna, 2.10 inches at Ft. Belvoir, and 1.64 inches in Lorton. In Alexandria, the combination of heavy rainfall and high tide resulted in temporary flooding in Old Town.
Temperatures in the mid 80s to lower 90s in combination with humid conditions resulted in several rounds of thunderstorms across Northern and Central Virginia from midday through late evening on the 13th. Several storms produced winds in excess of 55 MPH, large hail, frequent lightning, and very heavy downpours. One storm produced a 4 mile long F1 tornado on the north side of Charlottesville. At 7:45 PM a tornado touched down about 2 miles west of Charlottesville on the north side of Farmington Country Club and downed several trees. It moved northeast across Barracks Road to Albemarle High School where it took insulation from underneath modular classrooms and splattered it along nearby walls. The storm then crossed Hydraulic Road and Route 29 near Albemarle Square Shopping Center where it blew out a plate-glass window, injuring one customer. The tornado moved into the Woodbrook neighborhood where it damaged a few homes and trees then dissipated around 7:55 PM EDT. Hundreds of trees in the path of this 300 yard wide tornado were downed or snapped. The hardest hit areas were along Route 250 and Owensville Road, including the neighborhoods of Farmington, West Leigh, and Glenaire. Just south of the tornado's path, straight line winds estimated between 80 and 100 MPH downed several trees, power lines, and telephone poles. A storage place and its contents were also destroyed and homes nearby reported minor damage. One parked car and several guard rails were flattened by downed trees. Nearly 16,000 area customers lost power after the storm struck. In Loudoun County, quarter sized hail fell near the Route 15 Potomac River bridge northeast of Taylorstown. A cold front that crossed the Mid-Atlantic region during the afternoon of the 8th was accompanied by strong winds. Sowers that developed ahead and along the cold front brought winds in excess of 45 MPH to the surface, producing damage to trees, power lines, and a building under construction. Fallen tree limbs took out two sets of power lines in Alexandria and near Springfield in Fairfax County. A partially constructed townhouse near Huntington in Fairfax County collapsed after being hit by strong winds. A wind gust of 51 MPH was recorded at Washington Reagan National Airport that afternoon. Temperatures dropped more than 20 degrees within an hour after the cold front passed. Above 2500 feet in Shenandoah National Park, temperatures dropped below freezing. Strong winds continued behind the cold front from the evening of the 8th through the afternoon of the 9th. Northwest winds gusting over 35 MPH brought down additional trees and power lines in Alexandria, Fairfax City, and across Fairfax County. Over 2500 customers lost power. Power Outage FAQs
What is Power Outage?
Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.
What Causes Power Outages?
- Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.
What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
- Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
- Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
- Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
