Power Outage in Alma, KS

Power poles knotted down. Could have been associated with a tornado.

The 4th and final tornado of the day was produced by the same long lived supercell thunderstorm that produced all other tornadoes. This tornado did damage to one structure and to power poles along its path. The tornado was reported to be on the ground at K-99 and K-31 by law enforcement and it dissipated around one half mile east of this location.

Damage survey revealed minor hedge row tree damage and one power pole broken near beginning of path. Circulation then traveled over pastureland into non-accessible area of Shawnee County where dual pol radar showed a weak damage or debris signature approx. 2 miles southeast of start point. The tornado continued southeast to cause tree damage including snapped trunk of large trees and causing minor roof damage to a home at 109th street 1 mile east of Carlson Road before lifting.

A roof was blown off of a barn. Trees down on several roads across the southeast corner of the county. Widespread power outages.

Large trees were blown down across portions of Wabaunsee County. North of Bushong, the Chalk COOP observer reported a large dome blown off of his silo, which was also caved in due to the wind. Large hay bales were blown off of a parked semi-truck, and additional power poles were snapped. The winds continued to Harveyville, where more power poles were blown down.

Ice accumulations from one quarter of an inch up to one inch were reported across the county. Alta Vista was one of the hardest hit areas, with devastating tree damage evident across the town. Widespread power outages affected the county. Emergency shelters were set up across the county to assist those most adversely affected by the outages. A boil order was issued for residents because of the lack of water pressure for an extended period of time. Farmers found it incredibly difficult to keep their livestock fed and watered. Over 300 tons of salt was spread on Wabaunsee County roads in an effort to keep conditions safe for motorists that had to travel.
