Episodes

January 11, 2020

Strong low pressure passed to the south and east of lower Michigan on the 11th. This system produced two separate waves of mixed wintry precipitation, lasting from the late night hours of the 10th into early morning on the 12th. The heaviest snow fell in the Alpena and Rogers City area, with 6 to 8 inches, accompanied at times by wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph. This resulted in considerable blowing and drifting snow. Further south, the problem was freezing rain. Houghton Lake, Oscoda, and Standish picked up around a quarter-inch of ice accumulation. Combined with the gusty winds, this resulted in spotty power outages.

June 28, 2005

Thunderstorms developed across much of north-central and northeast Lower Michigan, just ahead of a slow-moving cold front. Some of these storms reached severe levels, downing trees and power lines and producing penny-sized hail.

December 25, 2003

Heavy snow moved into the region from the northeast on Christmas Eve night, wrapping around a powerful upper level disturbance in the eastern Great Lakes. The snow was enhanced by warmth and moisture off of Lake Huron. Snowfall totals of over 6 inches were common in northeast Lower Michigan and far eastern Upper Michigan. Ten to twelve inches of snow fell near Kinross, Hessel and Hawks.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
