Strong winds across the county up to 45 mph resulted in downed power lines with at least 2125 power customers without power. Damage values are estimated.

Several trees and powerlines were downed by the non-thunderstorm winds from the remnants of Ian. One tree fell on a home on Edgewood Drive. This is a continuation of impacts due to Ian from September 30th.

September 30, 2022 - Strong Wind

Several trees were downed by the non-thunderstorm winds from the remnants of Ian, including in and near Lynchburg and Gladys. Some of the trees fell on homes and apartments in the Lynchburg area, and four families were displaced. Approximately 5,300 residents lost power. One tree fell on a car while it was traveling along the 2200 block of Bishop Creek Road, caused the car to run off the road, and the driver was killed. Non-thunderstorm winds from the remnants of Ian continued to impact the area overnight through the morning hours of October 1, 2022.

February 11, 2021

A weak disturbance passed across the central Appalachians and lower mid-Atlantic during the late evening hours of the 11th into the early morning hours of the 12th, resulting in a mixture of snow, sleet and ice from freezing rain. Accumulations from this event ranged from around 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet, with less than a tenth of an inch of icing. This caused little to no damage, with only isolated/sporadic power outages reported. Travel was impacted however, with multiple automobile accidents reported in Campbell County. Injuries resulting from these accidents, if any, were considered to be minor. The wintry conditions resulted in school closures across region. COVID-19 vaccination centers in Lynchburg were also closed due to the difficult travel conditions.

Power outages reported in Altavista as storms impact area | WSET

Power outages have been reported in Altavista Wednesday after storms swept across Central Virginia. According to Dominion Energy,1,672 customers are affected. SEE ALSO:Severe Thunderstorm Watch; strong storms develop Wednesday. Dominion Energy is investigating the exact cause of the outage, but photos from the area show storm damage, including a tree falling on power lines. The power is estimated to be restored from 6 p. m. to 11 p. m.
