Power Outage in Altavista, VA

Strong winds across the county up to 45 mph resulted in downed power lines with at least 2125 power customers without power. Damage values are estimated.

Several trees and powerlines were downed by the non-thunderstorm winds from the remnants of Ian. One tree fell on a home on Edgewood Drive. This is a continuation of impacts due to Ian from September 30th.

Several trees were downed by the non-thunderstorm winds from the remnants of Ian, including in and near Lynchburg and Gladys. Some of the trees fell on homes and apartments in the Lynchburg area, and four families were displaced. Approximately 5,300 residents lost power. One tree fell on a car while it was traveling along the 2200 block of Bishop Creek Road, caused the car to run off the road, and the driver was killed. Non-thunderstorm winds from the remnants of Ian continued to impact the area overnight through the morning hours of October 1, 2022.

A couple trees, a utility pole and a few power lines were downed by thunderstorm winds in the northern portion of the county.

Several trees were blown down by thunderstorm winds around Altavista, with a few bringing power lines down with them.

Broadcast media, Skywarn-trained weather spotters and members of the general public observed ice accumulations ranging from 0.25 to 0.5 inches in thickness across Campbell County and the City of Lynchburg, including in the communities of Rustburg, Gladys and Altavista. The icing was intermixed with sleet accumulations of up to 0.5 inches across the county and in Lynchburg. Over 5,260 power outages were reported in the city and county combined because of the icing. In addition, the icing caused a tree to fall onto a truck along Highway 460 near the Candlers Mountain Road exit. It does not appear that the driver was injured. Key impacts: power outages; hazardous to impossible travel conditions; automobile accidentz; widespread tree damage.

At least four traffic accidents were reported by the City of Lynchburg Police Department as a result of slick roadway surfaces caused by a combination of snow, sleet and freezing rain having fallen during the late evening hours of the 11th into the early morning hours of the 12th. No injuries, if any occurred, were considered to be serious. A few power outages were also reported in the city. Key Impacts: transportation delays, traffic accidents, school closures, isolated/sporadic power outages.

Thunderstorm winds blew down two trees on to power lines in the Windcrest Manor area along Timberlake Drive.

Winds downed numerous trees and power lines within the county and also the City of Lynchburg. Several roads were blocked, including one by a downed power line near the Bedford County line along Route 24. A mobile home sustained moderate damage when a tree fell on the structure. Power outages peaked at 21,000 customers in the Lynchburg region. Damage values are estimated.

Snowfall amounts ranged from around two inches near Lynchburg to around four inches near Brookneal to around six inches near Gladys. Minor power outages occurred thanks to snow and ice weighted trees and limbs falling on power lines. Damage values are estimated.

In the area of the City of Lynchburg, a tree fell across Langhorn Road, taking a power line with it. Another tree was blown down onto a house. Damage values are estimated.

Snowfall amounts between 3 to 8 inches were observed across several locations in the county. The highest accumulation was in the Concord area where 8 inches was measured. A report of a quarter of an inch of freezing rain was also reported in Rustburg. Strong winds after the storm caused 305 customers to lose power in the City of Lynchburg.

The public reported that a power line was down on U.S. 501 near Gladys. The downed power line led to a vehicle accident involving an overturned car. Numerous tree limbs were also down across the area.

Strong northwest winds behind a strengthening coastal low caused scattered tree damage damage across the county through the day of the 10th. A transformer power line was also down near Altavista.

Eight to fourteen inches of snow fell across the county causing sporadic power outages and travel problems. It was the greatest 24-hour snowfall at Lynchburg since February, 1996.

Trees were blown down in Campbell County and across the City of Lynchburg. Some of these fallen trees brought down powerlines in the process. At one point, 4600 electrical customers in the Lynchburg area were without power.

A weak disturbance passed across the central Appalachians and lower mid-Atlantic during the late evening hours of the 11th into the early morning hours of the 12th, resulting in a mixture of snow, sleet and ice from freezing rain. Accumulations from this event ranged from around 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet, with less than a tenth of an inch of icing. This caused little to no damage, with only isolated/sporadic power outages reported. Travel was impacted however, with multiple automobile accidents reported in Campbell County. Injuries resulting from these accidents, if any, were considered to be minor. The wintry conditions resulted in school closures across region. COVID-19 vaccination centers in Lynchburg were also closed due to the difficult travel conditions.
