Power Outage in Baraga, MI

Storm total snowfall reports across the county included an estimated 41 inches just southeast of Mount Arvon, 27 inches at Herman, 19.5 inches at Three Lakes, 14 inches at L'Anse and 9.7 inches at Michigamme. The wet and heavy snowfall brought down trees and powerlines causing power outages, and numerous roads were closed across the county due to the near impossible travel on roadways from dense and compacted wet snow. Schools were closed throughout the county on the 1st and 2nd.

Two-day storm total snowfall reports included 14 inches of wet snow at Herman and Three Lakes and 12-16 inches in the Watton area. The heavy wet snow combined with north winds gusting near 35 mph caused power outages and tree damage to hundreds of customers during the event. North winds gusting near 35 mph caused power outages to hundreds of customers during the event and closed schools throughout the county on the 17th.

Facebook user shared pictures of a tree down over a road and on a primary power line three miles southeast of Assinins. Time of the report was estimated from radar.

Trees and power lines were reported down along Bayshore and Pequaming Roads northeast of L'Anse.

Multiple trees were observed down in the Three Lakes area and widespread power outages were reported throughout Baraga County.

Observers in Herman and Three Lakes measured over a quarter inch of ice accumulation from freezing rain, and just south of Baraga 0.8 inch of sleet was reported. The observer at Three Lakes had his power knocked out for three hours on the morning of the 30th due to the ice accumulation on the power lines.

Widespread freezing rain of 0.25 inches or more caused treacherous and icy road conditions, tree damage and widespread power outages during the period. Schools were cancelled on the 23rd due to the impacts from the freezing rain.

A lightning strike caused damage to a local power substation and caused power outages in L'anse in the early morning of the 7th.

Social media reports confirmed power outages outside of L'anse and trees reported down in L'anse and Baraga.

There was a public report of a heavy chair and wood missing from a yard west of Three Lakes. Thunderstorm winds also bent an analog antenna and knocked the power out for two hours. Time of the damage was estimated from radar.

Social media photos revealed a tree snapped off a quarter of the way off the ground, falling onto power lines on Lehto Road. The delayed report was estimated from radar.

Numerous power outages were reported across northwest Baraga County by UPPCO.

There were social media photos of power poles snapped near the intersection of Johnson Road and Bayshore Road near Zeba. Time of the delayed report was estimated from radar.

Observers at Herman and Watton measured between nine and ten inches of dense lake enhanced snow on the 27th. The wet, heavy snow combined with northeast winds gusting to 40 to 50 mph at times caused damage to trees and power lines which blocked some secondary roads and snowmobile trails. Baraga County Offices were closed on the 27th due to the storm.

The State Police Regional Dispatch reported trees down on power lines in Pequaming.

There was a public report of power and cell service out in L'anse.

Regional law enforcement dispatch reported large trees down and snapped power lines near the intersection of Highway M-38 and Pelkie Road. This was a delayed report.

Wind gusts between 50 and 55 mph knocked down some trees causing sporadic power outages across portions of Baraga County on the morning of the 24th.

The observer in Alberta reported a 20-inch diameter spruce tree snapped and two large maple branches broken by strong south wind gusts. The Baraga County Sheriff also reported a large tree down across Highway M-28 in Three Lakes with branches on power lines.

A fairly large tree was reported down on power lines at Pelkie Road and Highway M-38. This report by police dispatch and the sheriff's office was estimated by radar.

Large trees were downed on power lines and across the road 10 miles south of M-28 on US-141.

The observer in Herman measured two-tenths of an inch of ice accumulation from freezing rain. The power was also knocked out at his residence.

The observer near Herman measured 13.1 inches of snow in 18 hours. The wet snow caused numerous minor accidents, sporadic power outages and some tree damage.

Ten inch diameter tree was downed and power was out. Hail of unknown size was also reported.

Numerous downed trees and power outages were reported in L'anse and Baraga from strong wake low winds. Tree damage was also reported in Watton.

A tree fell on power lines sparking a small fire on Imperial Heights Road just off of US-41.

Numerous trees and power lines were reported down throughout the county.

Storm total snowfall over a two-day period included 29 inches at Alberta, 24.9 inches at Herman and 20.3 inches near Sidnaw. The heavy wet snow caused power outages, tree damage and closed schools on the 20th and 21st.
