Two trees were down on the 400 block of Marlboro Street. A large branch was down on a car on the 1300 block of Commonwealth Avenue. A large tree was down on cars on Jamaica Street. In Roslindale, a large branch was down on Lower South Street next to Arnold Street.

In Boston at Logan International Airport (KBOS) at 6:54 PM EST the ASOS reported a wind gust of 46 mph. In Boston at 3:24 PM EST powerlines were down on Seaverns Ave. In Revere at 3:37 PM EST powerlines were down on an abandoned house causing a fire.

At 1 PM EST (2 PM EDT), power lines were reported down on Calumet Street in the Roxbury section of Boston.

Winds generally were gusting to between 45 and 50 mph. Atop the Blue Hill, the ASOS there recorded a gust to 51 mph at 151 PM EST (251 PM EDT). In Boston at 142 PM EST, a large tree and power lines were down on Soldiers Field Road.

At 12 AM EST (midnight) on March 7, the ASOS at Logan International Airport (KBOS) recorded a wind gust to 45 mph. A few minutes earlier a CWOP station at Winthrop measured a gust to 38 mph. At 1125 PM EST on March 6, amateur radio operators reported a tree and power line down on Idaho Street in the Lower Mills section of southern Boston.

At 10:14 PM EST the Automated Surface Observing System platform at Logan International Airport measured a sustained wind of 33 mph. At 12:30 AM EST on the 9th an amateur radio operator in Boston reported power lines down on Child Street. A tree and street light were also down on Lee Street in Boston, and a tree was down on Chester Street in Boston.

Sustained winds reached 32 mph at Logan Airport in the late morning and peak gusts reached 46 mph at 1014 PM at night. During the course of the day, however, there were numerous reports of individual trees down. In Boston, single trees were down on Belgrade Ave., Malcolm Rd., and Homestead St. and power lines were down on Clinton St. In Chelsea at 1053 AM, wires fell onto a parked car on Marlboro St. Later, in Chelsea, 525 PM a large tree fell onto a building on Fremont Avenue. In Brookline, at 240 PM a tree was down on Warren Street and at 650 PM a large tree and power lines were down on Russett Road.

At 10:05 PM EST on May 4th, a street light was brought down on Dana Avenue at the Truman Parkway in Boston. At 12:37 AM on May 5th, an amateur radio operator in Boston reported a wind gust to 52 mph. At 3:05 AM EST, a tree was down on power lines on Corey Road in Boston.

Two and one-half to five inches of snow fell on Suffolk County. At 928 AM EST, power lines were reported down on Maple Street in Boston.

At 823 AM EST on Sept 21, a tree was down on power lines on Clarendon Street in Boston. At 144 PM EST on Sept 21 a large tree was down on Turtle Pond Parkway, in the Hyde Park section of Boston, at Maple Leaf Drive.

Winds gusted to 59 mph in Brookline. A tree was brought down on wires along River Road in Winthrop. A Tree was down on a car on Pleasant Street in Boston. Power Lines were brought down on Seattle Street in Boston.

Power lines on Weld and Beech Streets were downed by thunderstorm winds.

Power lines were downed onto Allston and Moultrie Streets in Dorchester. A tree was downed onto a car on Mellen and Ashmont Streets. Mallet Street was blocked due to a downed tree. In East Boston, wires were downed onto Moore Street. A tree was downed onto a car near the corner of Trenton and Meridian Streets. A tree was downed onto a house on Summit Avenue in Chelsea. In Jamaica Plain, a tree was downed onto Forest Hills Street. A large tree was downed across L Street in South Boston. In Roslindale, a tree was downed onto multiple cars on Navarre Street near Canterbury Street. A tree was downed onto two cars on Henley and Main Streets in Charlestown.

The Automated Surface Observing System at Logan International Airport recorded sustained winds of 38 mph and wind gusts of 54 mph. These winds resulted in downed tree limbs and power lines on Allston and Rutherford Streets, as well as on Bronx Road. In addition, these winds greatly exacerbated a structure fire in the Back Bay (ended up as a 9 alarm fire), in which 2 firefighters were killed and 13 others were injured.

In Boston, a tree was downed onto East Street and power lines were downed on Red Pine Road. A large tree was downed onto cars and laying across Blue Hill Avenue. A tree was downed at the intersection of VFW Parkway and Centre Street in Jamaica Plain.

In addition, trees were downed on LaGrange, Pembroke, Prince, and Washington Streets and Longwood Avenue in Boston. One of the trees on Pembroke Street landed on a car, resulting in damage to the car. A power pole was downed onto a house in Boston.

A passing powerful coastal low combined with building strong high pressure over Quebec brough strong, damaging winds to the south coast of MA.

A low pressure nor'easter underwent bombogenesis as it developed east of Nantucket on the 26th. It then moved west toward Nantucket Sound, before heading eastward again back out to sea on the 27th. Winds gusted to 60-90+ mph. More than one-half million power outages were reported...495,000 in MA and 96,800 in RI. Schools were closed for multiple days, as it took a while to clean up the downed trees/wires and to restore power.

An arctic cold front moved through southern New England on the afternoon of March 1st. It was followed by very strong/damaging west-northwest winds, which continued through much of the night and into the early morning hours on March 2nd. There were many reports of downed trees and at one point, more than 60,000 customers were without power in Massachusetts.

Immediately after winds and rainfall associated with post-tropical cyclone Zeta (which passed well to our southeast) diminished, a new system approached. This was a rapidly moving upper level low and its associated upper jet max, which moved northeastward from the Mississippi Valley and low pressure again passed to the south of New England. Cold air was streaming into the region from the north. The result was some heavy, wet snow across the region, with many areas receiving 3 to 6 inches. The weight of the snow caused scattered tree and power line damage.

A squall line formed in New York State then raced eastward in the late afternoon and early evening, gathering strength as it raced across Massachusetts, northeast Connecticut, and northern Rhode Island. Hundreds of thousands of people were left without power in southern New England, as there was widespread tree and power line damage from winds generally gusting to between 50 and 80 mph. The Storm Prediction Center officially classified it as a derecho. Along the line, an isolated brief tornado touched down in Millis, Massachusetts. Prior to the derecho, strong southwest winds gusted to 40-50 mph in the early afternoon.

A powerful low pressure system tracked across the Great Lakes and brought strong and damaging winds to all of Massachusetts Monday late morning through the evening. A very strong and highly anomalous low level jet brought southerly wind gusts of 60-70 mph ahead of a cold front that moved through Monday evening.

Powerful low pressure moved from eastern Pennsylvania across central Connecticut and central Massachusetts on February 7, 2020. A southerly jet of 85 to 95 mph was just above the surface at 925 mb. Damaging winds occurred across much of eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island with some damage reported farther to the west. There were widespread power outages and numerous trees down, some falling on homes and vehicles. Late in the evening, as of 11 PM, more than 66,000 residents remained without power.

A powerful coastal storm developed along the NJ coast then moved|northeast across southern New England Wednesday night into Thursday. |This will brought periods of very heavy rain and strong to damaging |winds to the region.

A cold front stalled over Southern New England on the 11th. Low pressure from the Midwest then moved slowly east along the front. The weather system drew upon warm and very humid air to create showers with local downpours, resulting in rainfall amounts of two to five inches in Northern Massachusetts on August 11th and 12th. An exceptionally powerful downpour left 8.15 inches in the city of Lynn.

A very powerful low pressure system tracked up the east coast, passing southeast of Southern New England. This storm brought heavy snow and gusty winds, resulting in blizzard conditions along the Massachusetts east coast.

Low pressure traveling along a cold front stalled south of southern New England brought heavy rain, which changed over to heavy snow as temperatures dropped. This snow was extraordinarily wet and heavy, bringing down trees and wires across portions of southern New England. Power outages reached a peak of approximately 107,000 customers without power in Massachusetts during the peak of the storm, mainly across eastern Massachusetts.

A strong low pressure system moved through the Great Lakes bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to southern New England. A strong low level jet combined with the heavy rain to result in intermittently strong winds mixing to the surface. These winds resulted in scattered tree and power line damage across southern New England.

An historic winter storm brought heavy snow to southern New England with blizzard conditions to much of Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts, beginning during the day on Monday, January 26 and lasting into the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 27. The highest snowfall totals, averaging two to three feet, extended from extreme northeast Connecticut and northwest Rhode Island into much of central and northeast Massachusetts, including greater Boston. Some of the highest totals reported include Hudson, MA (36 inches), Acton, MA (34 inches), Thompson, CT (33.5 inches), and Methuen, MA (31.5 inches). Much of southeast Massachusetts and the rest of Rhode Island received one to two feet of snow. Totals dropped off dramatically west of the Connecticut River Valley where totals of 4 to 8 inches were observed. ||The storm was well-forecast, with Blizzard Watches and Winter Storm Watches issued 2 days before the snow began. Low pressure tracked northeast from the Carolinas and strengthened rapidly as it slowly passed southeast of Nantucket on Monday evening, January 26. All of the precipitation fell as snow with this storm. At its peak, snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour were common. In Massachusetts, blizzard conditions were officially reported in Marshfield (14 hours), Hyannis (13 hours), Nantucket (11 hours), Boston (9 hours), Chatham (9 hours), Worcester (7 hours), and Beverly (3 hours). In Rhode Island, blizzard conditions were officially reported in Westerly (5 hours), Newport (4 hours), and at T.F. Green State Airport in Warwick (3 hours). Several other locations fell just short of the required criteria (3 consecutive hours of blizzard conditions) including Fitchburg, New Bedford, Falmouth, and Martha���s Vineyard in Massachusetts and Smithfield in Rhode Island.||Daily snowfall records were set for January 27 in Boston (22.1 inches, previous record 8.8 inches in 2011), Worcester (31.9 inches, previous record 11.0 in 2011), and Providence (16.0 inches, previous record 6.7 inches in 2011). In Worcester, the snowfall total of 34.5 inches was the greatest on record (dating back to 1892), breaking the previous record of 33.0 inches on March 31 to April 1, 1997. In Providence, the total of 19.1 inches was the fourth highest on record (dating back to 1904), while in Boston the total of 24.6 inches was the sixth highest on record (dating back to 1872).||The Blizzard of January 2015 produced very strong winds late Monday into Tuesday near the Massachusetts and Rhode Island coasts where gusts of 50 to 65 mph were common. Gusts reached hurricane force at a few locations in Massachusetts including Nantucket (78 mph), Chatham (75 mph), Humarock (74 mph), and Aquinnah (74 mph).||Significant coastal flooding occurred along the Massachusetts east coast, mainly south of Boston. Due to a north-northeast wind around the time of the early morning high tide, Boston���s north shore was spared to some degree with mostly minor impacts. North and east facing coastlines from Hull to Chatham as well as Nantucket experienced moderate to major coastal flooding with some areas experiencing inundation in excess of 3 feet and pockets of structural damage, especially where sea walls and other protective devices were compromised. Severe erosion was reported along portions of the coastline south of Boston. The Sandwich area was especially hard hit with erosion as a consequence of strong onshore winds by the time of the early morning high tide. Very preliminary estimates indicate that the coastal impact along the eastern Massachusetts coast south of Boston was generally comparable to but in a few locations a little greater than the February 2013 Blizzard. Residents had to be evacuated from neighborhoods in Hull and Scituate.||The governor of Massachusetts declared a travel ban that began on January 27th at midnight and was lifted county-by-county as conditions allowed. Power outages were few (limited mainly to Cape Cod and the Islands) but had a high impact as all power was out on the island of Nantucket. Logan International Airport was closed through 6 am January 28th. A total of 116 cities and towns declared local states of emergency during this storm, activating their Emergency Operations Centers. Most Amtrak, ferry, train, and bus service was suspended for January 27th, prior to the storm. Over 40 shelters opened, serving a total of 450 individuals.||Two fatalities were reported as a result of this storm: a 97 year old man who died while trying to clear a carbon dioxide vent at his home in Yarmouth and a 53 year old man in New Bedford who died while snow blowing his neighbors driveway.||President Obama issued a federal disaster declaration for the eastern parts of Massachusetts for this storm, allowing federal assistance for emergency work and repairs to facilities damaged by the storm.

Low pressure moving up the east coast brought a soaking rain and strong winds to much of southern New England. The strongest winds were along the east coast of Massachusetts where many trees were still fully leaved. This resulted in significant tree damage along with power outages. In addition, both downed leaves from the storm and naturally fallen leaves from before the storm clogged storm drains which resulted in street flooding, particularly across northeastern Massachusetts.

An historic winter storm deposited tremendous amounts of snow over all of southern New England, mainly from the mid-afternoon on Friday, February 8 and lasting into the daylight hours of Saturday, February 9. What made this an amazing storm was the widespread coverage of heavy snowfall. Most locations received 2 to 2.5 feet of snow! A stationary band of even heavier snowfall persisted from southwest NH through central MA and on to the southwest across central and western CT. In those areas, reports averaged closer to 2.5 to 3 feet! Along the southeast MA coast, average amounts ranged from 1 to 2 feet. Only on Martha���s Vineyard and Nantucket were snowfall totals less than 1 foot (6 to 12 inches). Isolated thunderstorms were common across the entire region during the height of the storm.||A low pressure system advancing from the Great Lakes region combined forces with a very moist low pressure system moving northeast from the Gulf Coast states. Explosive deepening took place Friday evening, February 8, as a low center moved from the North Carolina coast to south of Nantucket. Strong high pressure to the north of New England helped ensure that cold air remained in place over the area. Snowfall gained intensity during the afternoon, but during the night, 2 to 3 inch per hour amounts were common throughout the region. The band of heaviest snowfall, with 3 to 5 inches per hour for several hours, extended from southwest NH to central and western CT. The precipitation started as mainly snow, although a brief period of rain at the onset was common on the Islands. Snow ended in the morning in western and central MA, southwest NH, most of CT and RI, and in the early afternoon across eastern MA. It lingered during the whole afternoon over Cape Cod and Nantucket, aided by some ocean-effect bands of snowfall.||The Blizzard of 2013 also produced a prolonged period of very strong winds Friday night along the MA and RI coasts. Gusts exceeded hurricane force (74 mph) at a few locations. Gale force gusts (to 50 mph) continued on the MA coast through Saturday afternoon. The strong winds, combined with a wet snow, led to extensive power outages from downed trees and wires in southeast coastal MA and in southern RI. Elsewhere, farther inland, the snow became drier and did not cling to trees like it did along the south and southeast coast of New England. Some wind gusts included: 76 mph at Logan Int���l. Airport (Boston, MA), 75 mph at Bedford, MA, 77 mph at Hyannis, MA and 68 mph in Jamestown, RI. Damaging gusts to 60 mph were recorded as far west as Worcester County, MA. Wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph were common elsewhere in southern New England.| |In addition, moderate to major coastal flooding occurred, most notably during the time of the high tide Saturday morning along the Massachusetts east coast. At the storm's height near the early morning low tide, the storm surge reached 3 to 4 feet along much of the MA east coast from Boston south. At the time of the mid-morning high tide, the winds had shifted from northeast to north and the surge had dropped to 1.5 to 2.5 feet for most MA east coast locations. However, this was an astronomically high tide given the nearness to the time of the new moon, and waves to 30 feet had built just 15 miles off the coast. Consequently, many coastal roadways were impassable from Salisbury and Gloucester to Marshfield and Scituate on the south shore and on parts of Cape Cod. Water several feet deep was seen flowing into some vulnerable homes in Scituate. Although there was some structural damage, it did not come close to what was experienced during the Blizzard of 1978. Minor tidal flooding occurred along the south coasts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island during times of high tide Friday night and Saturday morning.

A cold front moved across southern New England into a warm moist airmass with plenty of instability. This resulted in severe thunderstorms and in some cases training of storms that resulted in flash flooding across some of the more urban areas. A microburst occurred in Arlington, knocking down numerous trees and damaging a roof. Also, several railroad crossings along the Greenbush and Old Colony commuter rail lines in Massachusetts lost power due to lightning. This delayed both lines by 20 to 25 minutes as trains slowed down and had crews walking along the train as it crossed the roads at those crossings.

A rare and historic October Nor'easter brought very heavy snow to portions of southern New England on Saturday October 29. Low pressure tracked northeast from the North Carolina coast Saturday morning, rapidly strengthening as it passed well south of Nantucket Saturday evening. As the storm intensified, colder air from aloft was drawn into New England resulting in heavy snow in the interior. ||Snowfall accumulations of one to two feet were common in the Monadnocks, Berkshires, Connecticut Valley, and higher elevations in central Massachusetts. Up to 31 inches of snow was reported at Jaffrey, New Hampshire and Plainfield, Massachusetts. Minor accumulations were even reported down to the south coast as the rain changed to a period of snow late Saturday night before ending. The accumulation of the heavy wet snow on trees and power lines resulted in widespread tree damage and power outages across many communities in central and western Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, and northeastern Connecticut. This resulted in school closures and numerous towns cancelled or rescheduled Halloween and trick-or-treating activities. At the peak, 665,000 customers in Massachusetts were without power. Seventy-seven shelters were opened and sheltered over 2000 residents across the state. All shelters were closed by the evening of November 6th. A state of emergency was declared by Governor Patrick on October 29th and he declared an end to the state of emergency on November 6th.||Six fatalities occurred during and in the aftermath of the storm. They are not included in the Storm Data statistics due to their very indirect nature. Further descriptions of these fatalities are as follows:||Four people died from carbon monoxide poisoning from improperly ventilated generators, including a 47 year old Worcester man and a 49 year old Hatfield woman.||A Lunenberg resident died in a fire.||A 20 year old Springfield man died after walking into an area of downed power lines and stepping on or touching an electrified metal guardrail.||The precipitation started as mainly snow early Saturday afternoon across the interior of southern New England, although a brief period of rain at the onset was common across the lower elevations. Several hours of heavy snow occurred from mid afternoon through late evening on Saturday October 29. Snowfall rates reached 3 inches per hour for several hours in the Berkshires and Monadnocks as a nearly stationary band of heavy snow set up across this region. The snow tapered off just after midnight Saturday night in western New England with the last of the precipitation exiting eastern New England Sunday morning. This storm also brought damaging winds to Cape Cod and the islands with wind gusts up to 70 mph occurring early Sunday morning October 30 as well as minor to moderate coastal flooding to east coastal Massachusetts during the high tide early Sunday morning.

Hurricane Irene formed east of the Caribbean island of Dominica, part of the Lesser Antilles region, on the afternoon of August 20. Irene moved through the Caribbean and up the east coast of the United States making landfall twice. She first made landfall as a Category 1 Hurricane near Cape Lookout, North Carolina around 7:30am on August 27, then moved offshore again during the evening. She then made a 2nd landfall, again as a Category 1 Hurricane at 540am on August 28 near Little Egg Inlet in New Jersey. She moved over New York City and then into southeastern New York State and Connecticut as a Tropical Storm a few hours later. By the end of the evening of the 28th, Irene was crossing the U.S./Canada border having produced significant amounts of rain, storm surge, inland and coastal flooding, and wind damage across southern New England and much of the east coast of the United States.||In Southern New England, the minimum surface pressure recorded was 976.9mb taken at Barnes Municipal Airport in Westfield, Massachusetts. The storm surge experienced along the coast was generally in the two to four foot range with a high of 4.78 feet at Fox Point in Providence, Rhode Island. The highest sustained windspeed was 54 knots (62 mph) at the Physical Oceanographic Real Time System station at Conimicut Light in Narragansett Bay, RI. The highest sustained wind speed on land was 38 knots (44 mph) recorded on the Automated Surface Observing Systems at both Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis, MA (KHYA) and Logan International Airport in Boston, MA (KBOS). Rainfall amounts ranged from nearly zero (0.03 at Nantucket Memorial Airport - ACK) to nearly 10 inches (9.92 in Conway, MA).||Despite the relatively low wind speeds, sustained winds over a 6 to 12 hour long duration resulted in widespread tree damage and resulted in power outages to roughly half a million customers throughout the state. Some of these customers did not get their power back until the Friday following the storm (some five days later). During the passage of Tropical Storm Irene, the winds resulted in $34.7M in property damages, storm surge resulted in $75,000 in property damages, and inland flooding resulted in $24.13M in property damages, all in Massachusetts.||This rainfall contributed to significant flooding in northwestern Massachusetts where mainstem rivers and their tributaries reached levels not seen since 1987, and in some cases (The Connecticut River at Montague) since 1938. The Deerfield River at West Deerfield set a new flood of record at 23.8 feet, the previous record was 17.71 feet set in April of 1987. The North River at Shattuckville set a new flood of record at 17.66 feet, the previous record was 12.32 feet set in October of 2005. The Westfield River reached its highest level since 1980. The Connecticut River at Holyoke, Springfield, and Northampton crested at its highest level since April 1987.||The collective effects of Tropical Storm Irene on August 28, resulted in 1 fatality, 0 injuries, and $127.3M in property damage in the following counties: Barnstable, Bristol, Essex, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Middlesex, Nantucket, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk, and Worcester (all in MA), Hartford, Tolland, and Windham (all in CT), Cheshire and Hillsborough (all in NH), and Bristol, Providence, Kent, Washington, and Newport (all in RI).

A developing nor'easter coastal storm dumped up to two feet of snow across Massachusetts in a 24 hour period. Strong winds combined with the heavy snow along the coast producing numerous downed trees and wires, resulting in 100,000 homes without power statewide, though most were in southeastern Massachusetts. Logan International Airport closed for several hours during the storm.||This was the second major storm of an above average winter of snowfall. The first occurred December 26 and 27, with several other relatively minor snowfalls in the month of January, and a third major storm February 1 and 2. With only a brief thaw in between the December storm and the January storm, snow piled up across southern New England resulting in numerous roof collapses, towns seeking permission to dump excess snow in area rivers and bays, and numerous disruptions to transportation. Federal assistance was sought by Governor Patrick for costs associated with the January 12 winter storm and its cleanup. It was granted by President Obama for Hampshire, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, and Suffolk counties.

A strengthening winter storm passed southeast of Nantucket and brought heavy snow and strong winds to Massachusetts, resulting in near blizzard conditions at times. This combination of heavy snow and strong winds also resulted in numerous downed trees, power outages to thousands of Massachusetts residents, and other significant wind damage mainly in eastern Massachusetts. More than 2000 flights were cancelled along the east coast due to the storm and Amtrak service between New York and Boston was suspended during the storm. Despite numerous cancellations Boston's Logan International Airport remained open during the storm. Snowfall totals ranged from as little as 2 to 6 inches on Cape Cod and the Islands to as much as 10 to 20 inches elsewhere. The State House News Service estimated that clean up costs were more than $14 million for the state of Massachusetts.

Low pressure centered over Martha's Vineyard brought strong northeast winds onshore into northeastern Massachusetts. Sustained wind speeds ranged from about 30 mph on the Cape (nearest to the center of the storm) to 45 mph along the northeast coast of Massachusetts. Gusts ranged from 55 mph up to 70 mph. Numerous trees, utility poles, and wires were downed by these winds with these sometimes damaging homes, cars, and other property on the ground. This resulted in numerous power outages across northeast Massachusetts. In addition, the MBTA green line train to Riverside was shut down for about 10 hours because of trees on the tracks. The MBTA Newburyport commuter rail line was also shut down after a tree landed on a locomotive. Northeast winds also built up seas along the east coast. This combined with relatively high astronomical tides resulted in minor to moderate coastal flooding along the east coast.||In addition, four inches to near a foot of snow fell in western Massachusetts. One to three inches of rain fell east of Interstate 495, resulting in some minor poor drainage and street flooding.

Low pressure moved up the Atlantic coast and spread snow across southern New England. Six to twelve inches of heavy snow fell across much of Massachusetts, downing trees and power lines, some of which fell on cars, homes, and across commuter train/subway tracks. In anticipation of the heaviest snow falling during the morning commute, the mayor of Boston closed 144 schools and ordered all non-essential city workers to stay home. Despite many Massachusetts communities following their lead, enough people were still on the roads to result in many minor spin-out accidents. At Boston Logan Airport, at least 100 flights were cancelled during the storm. In addition to the snow, advisory level winds blew on Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard. No wind damage was reported.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Noel impacted coastal Massachusetts with high winds and coastal flooding. Trees, branches, and power lines were downed, resulting in an estimated 50,000 customers without power across the South Shore, Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard. Several houses and cars were damaged by falling trees and tree limbs throughout this area as well. A handful of boats also were beached on Nantucket. Coastal flooding closed several streets across coastal Massachusetts and the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, including the Marblehead Neck Causeway in eastern Essex County.

An unusually strong and slow moving coastal storm for mid April tracked to western Long Island Sound on April 16th before weakening slowly and drifting offshore. This storm brought a variety of impacts in southern New England, including heavy snow to the higher elevations of western Massachusetts, damaging winds in excess of 60 mph, widespread river and stream flooding, and significant coastal flooding through several high tide cycles.|Snowfall totals as high as 4 to 8 inches were observed in the higher elevations of Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden Counties. There were numerous reports of downed trees and power lines in these areas from the weight of the heavy, wet snow. Lesser storm totals of 1 to 3 inches were reported from northern Worcester into northwest Middlesex Counties. Most of this snow fell during the day on April 15th, and changed to rain at night as milder air was drawn into the interior.|East to northeast winds gusted as high as 60 mph in eastern Massachusetts. The highest gusts reported included 72 mph at the Blue Hill Observatory in Milton, 67 mph in East Falmouth, 64 mph on Nantucket, and 63 mph in Plymouth. There were widespread reports of downed trees, large branches, and power lines, as far inland as Taunton, Framingham, and Topsfield. Several roads were blocked by fallen trees in southeast Massachusetts. Wind damage was more sporadic across western and central Massachusetts.|Rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches, combined with wet antecedent conditions, resulted in widespread river and stream flooding, as well as significant flooding of urban areas. The worst flooding affected the Merrimack Valley, where moderate to major flooding occurred on the Merrimack, Nashua, and North Nashua Rivers. For many locations, this may have been the worst flooding since the May, 2006 or April, 1987 floods ��� but along the North Nashua, the preliminary crests recorded may have been the highest since the floods of September, 1938.|Many small streams throughout the region also rose out of their banks and flooded nearby areas, including roadways. Major flooding occurred along the Mill River in Northampton, which required the evacuation of nearby residents. |Minor to moderate coastal flooding occurred along the coastline of|Massachusetts through several high tide cycles, due to the combination of strong onshore winds, high seas, and astronomically high tides.|Along the South Coast, the worst coastal flooding occurred with morning high tide on April 16th, where flood waters and debris closed several shore roads. In eastern Massachusetts, the worst coastal flooding occurred with the evening high tide on April 17th. Moderate flooding forced the closure of many shore roads. There were reports of cars stranded in flood waters along the Plymouth County coast. Although no injuries or fatalities were reported, four people including two children needed to be rescued from vehicles ��� one of whom nearly drowned when her car was carried away by flood waters in the Green Harbor section of Marshfield. On Nantucket, one home on Sheep Pond Road fell into the ocean after waves eroded the bluff underneath. Coastal flooding also affected Martha���s Vineyard and Chatham. A breach was opened on Norton Point Beach on Chappaquiddick Island, cutting off access to Edgartown, and also on Nauset Beach in Chatham where several cottages were cut off from the mainland.

Strong northwest winds in the wake of a polar cold front produced sporadic damage in part of the Connecticut Valley as well as the northeast coast. In Chicopee, sheet metal was blown onto wires, causing a power outage. An amateur radio operator reported a measured wind gust to 56 mph. In Saugus, wind gusts estimated as high as 45 mph brought down wires and one tree on Howard Street. Wires were also downed near Fox Hill Bridge in Revere.

Low pressure intensified rapidly as it tracked from the mid Atlantic states into New England. This storm system brought damaging east to southeast winds to much of eastern Massachusetts, where wind gusts were measured as high as 66 mph on Cape Cod.|Trained spotters and amateur radio operators reported widespread damage from the Merrimack Valley into the metropolitan Boston area, as well as southeast Massachusetts including Cape Cod and the islands. There were many reports of downed or uprooted trees, some of which fell onto houses or vehicles. According to media reports, an estimated 11,000 customers were left without power. In Swampscott, the combination of wind and rough seas ripped five sailboats and two powerboats from their moorings, causing them to either smash into rocks or run aground on the beach.|Significant coastal flooding was reported along the south coast of Massachusetts, where moderate coastal flooding was reported in New Bedford on French Street.|In addition, rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches resulted in widespread urban flooding from greater Boston to the South Shore. Several roads were closed due to flooding from Boston and Cambridge to Wellesley, Taunton, and Brockton.

Severe thunderstorms produced significant wind damage throughout most of Massachusetts.The storms first affected the western third of the state by late afternoon, where there were many reports of downed trees, branches, and power lines in Hampshire and Hampden Counties. Two people had to be rescued in Southwick, when gusty winds from the storms overturned their canoe.As the storms progressed into central Massachusetts, they downed trees in Worcester County from Hardwick to Northborough, one of which narrowly missed hitting a police cruiser. A nine-year old child was injured in Northborough by falling debris and there was structural damage to a building. Quarter sized hail fell in Webster, and quarter to dollar sized hail was reported in West Boylston.Wind damage was more severe in eastern Massachusetts. A National Weather Service Storm Survey concluded that a microburst occurred in Lowell with estimated wind speeds of 70 mph. Many pine trees were snapped near their tops to about one-third of the way down. A car was flattened by a fallen tree at a baseball field along Pawtucket Boulevard. Damage was also noted on Varnum Avenue, one block farther to the north.Elsewhere, there were many reports of trees falling on cars around greater Boston, including the western and southern suburbs. A wind gust to 60 mph was recorded at Blue Hill Observatory in Milton. Quarter sized hail fell in Stoughton and penny sized hail was reported in Salem.

A strong cold front swept across southern New England from late Friday morning through the afternoon hours of 17 February 2006, producing high winds across most of Massachusetts. Southwest winds sustained between 20 and 30 MPH with gusts to around 60 MPH were common during this event. These winds brought down numerous trees, power poles, and wires across the state. Some of the downed trees landed on buildings and cars. One known fatality and three known injuries directly resulted from this high wind event.Part of a roof was torn off a car dealership building on Main Street in Greenfield, off an industrial building at Pleasant and Main Streets in Ashland, and off the sixteenth floor of the Green Building on the MIT campus in Cambridge. A utility pole was uprooted on River Road in Whately, on Wildwood Ave in Woburn, on Willow Road in Lynn, and on Rocky Hill Road in Hadley. Several utility poles came down in Lowell, 3 utility poles came down in Hubbardston, and one pole came down on Route 110 in Amesbury. In South Hadley, a large tree limb fell on the Mount Holyoke Wilder Hall dormitory then slid off to fall 4 stories and land on the ground floor entrance porch, injuring one female student. A tree fell down on a house at 110 Hastings Street in Framingham, at 258 Willis Road in Sudbury, at 3 Wildrose Drive in Andover, at 47 Sugar Hill Road and at Jackson Street in Methuen, at 110 Osgood Street in North Andover, on Monument Street in Wenham, on Trask Street in Peobody, and on Peter Hobert Driver in Hingham.In Haverhill, high winds brought down a large pine tree, which landed on the passenger side of a vehicle. The tree nearly cut the vehicle in half, critically injuring the 37 year old male passenger, and minorly injuring the 27 year old female driver.During this high wind event, the Bedford Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) measured a sustained wind of 44 MPH at 12:53 PM and a peak wind gust of 58 MPH at 12:52 PM. The Fitchburg ASOS measured a sustained wind of 44 MPH at 12:22 PM and a peak wind gust of 60 MPH at 1221 PM. The Beverly ASOS measured a sustained wind of 43 MPH at 1:06 PM and a peak wind gust of 58 MPH at 1:06 PM. The Boston ASOS measured a sustained wind of 48 MPH at 1:15 PM and a peak wind gust of 58 MPH at 1:15 PM. The Blue Hill Observatory ASOS measured a sustained wind of 45 MPH at 11:53 AM.One known fatality occurred when a tree fell on a pickup truck in Billerica, crushing the truck and the 46 year old man inside.In summary, this high wind event of 17 February 2006 caused lots of damage across Massachusetts, including 1 fatality and 3 known injuries across the state.

A low pressure system centered near the Delaware coast intensified rapidly as it tracked quickly northeast across southern New England, producing near-blizzard conditions across Massachusetts around mid afternoon. Damaging winds, whiteout conditions, and approximately one hour of thunder snow occurred across most of the region. In addition, snowfall amounts ranged from around 2 inches across south coastal locations, to as much as 16 inches across northeast and north central Massachusetts. The combination of high winds and snow caused approximately 150,000 electric customers to lose power.Damaging wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph were common across Cape Cod and the rest of southeast Massachusetts. These high winds brought down numerous trees, telephone poles, and wires. The Westport Fire Department reported numerous trees and two telephone poles down around town. One tree fell down on a building, causing damage to that building. A widow's walk was blown off of a house on Nantucket as a result of high winds. A tree was reported blown down on a car on the corner of Bakerville and Gulf Roads in North Dartmouth. A fallen highway sign closed Route 3 on the Duxbury-Kingston line for a short time.Cape Cod received widespread wind damage during this storm; trees, limbs, and wires were reported down in Chatham, Marstons Mills, Dennis, Falmouth, Orleans, and Centerville. Measured wind gusts include 64 mph in Bourne, 59 mph in Falmouth, 75 mph in Chatham, and 64 mph in Marstons Mills. In addition, a house boat came apart and was blown onto the shore in Buzzards Bay. In Wellfleet, oyster farmers discovered that their steel rebar beds used to cultivate oysters were churned and twisted by the storm's high winds and seas. Nearly 12 farmers each lost between $50,000 and $100,000, and many other farmers each experienced a few thousand dollars loss from these damaging winds.Whiteout conditions caused Boston's Logan airport to close for approximately 2 hours beginning around 3:30 PM EST. Before the airport closed, a lightning bolt struck Comair Flight 5437 Canada regional flight just before landing. This flight was traveling from Baltimore International Airport. The lightning bolt caused damage to the airplane's left wing tip, but the plane landed safely with 3 crew members and 35 passengers aboard.In addition, this powerful winter storm also produced coastal flooding in Wareham, closing three roads.This rapidly-moving low produced near-blizzard conditions across the eastern half of southern New England as it moved across southeast Massachusetts during the afternoon of 9 December 2005, however, no known injuries directly resulted from this event.

A strong low pressure system departing toward the Canadian Maritimes, combined with an area of high pressure moving east from the Great Lakes, produced a large pressure gradient that resulted in high winds mainly across the eastern half of Massachusetts. These winds brought down limbs, trees, and power lines, causing power outages across the region. High wind gusts knocked down several large trees, limbs and wires across Worcester, Middlesex, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Bristol, and Plymouth counties. Blue Hill Observatory in Milton recorded a sustained wind of 43 MPH at 241 PM EST. In Georgetown, high wind gusts knocked at 15 inch diameter tree down on a nearby truck. In East Boston, strong wind gusts brought a utility pole and wires down on Boardman Street. No injuries directly resulted from this high wind event.

A strong coastal storm brought high winds to much of eastern Massachusetts, which brought down trees and power lines, especially on Cape Cod and the islands where winds gusted as high as 60 mph on Nantucket. About 12,000 electric customers were left without power during the storm.In addition, moderate coastal flooding was reported from Salem to Cohasset and Hull. Several coastal roadways were closed due to flooding around the time of high tide.One injury was directly related to the high winds. In Brockton, a woman was driving along West Street when a tree fell onto her car, smashing the windshield and dislocating her shoulder.

The most widespread severe weather outbreak of the season brought many reports of large hail, downed trees, and power lines throughout much of central and eastern Massachusetts. Hail as large as golf balls and hen eggs caused damage to several cars in Norwell, Scituate, and Marshfield. Lightning from the storms caused two injuries. A man in South Boston was struck by part of a bolt of lightning that struck a nearby tree. Another man in Blackstone was struck by lightning but only received minor injuries. Several structure fires to homes and businesses were also reported from lightning strikes in Leominster, Wilmington, Hingham, and Hyannis.

Low pressure moving through the St. Lawrence valley brought high winds to much of southern New England. In Massachusetts, peak wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph brought down trees and power lines over much of the state, and disrupted electric service to about 12,000 customers. The hardest hit area was in Western Massachusetts, where power was not restored for two days.

A major winter storm impacted southern New England on Christmas Day, bringing heavy, wet snow and high winds to the Bay State. The greatest snowfall accumulations were reported from the east slopes of the Berkshires into central and northeast Massachusetts, where 8 to 15 inches of snow fell. Around 6 inches of snow fell in the greater Boston area, with 2 to 5 inches in Bristol and Plymouth Counties.The weight of the snow, combined with strong northeast winds, brought down trees and power lines throughout much of Worcester County and the Merrimack Valley. About 29,000 customers lost power in these areas during the height of the storm, many on the northern end of Interstate 495. High winds were reported in the immediate Boston area and also on Nantucket. At Logan International Airport, sustained winds reached 40 mph during the late afternoon, while at the Blue Hill Observatory in Milton sustained winds reached 45 mph with a peak gust to 65 mph. On Nantucket, sustained winds of 41 mph were reported.Official storm totals included 13.5 inches at Worcester Airport, 10.7 inches at Blue Hill Observatory, 5.4 inches at Logan International Airport, and 2.8 inches at the National Weather Service office in Taunton.Other snowfall totals from the storm included 18 inches in Middlefield; 16 inches in Goshen; 15 inches in Byfield; 12 inches in Newburyport, Pepperell, Townsend, and Shrewsbury; 10 inches in North Andover, Ayer, Reading, Sterling, West Brookfield, Sunderland, West Springfield and Hadley; 8 inches in Methuen, Lexington, Fitchburg, and Sutton; and 6 inches in Waltham, Winthrop, and Northbridge.

The combination of high astronomical tides and an intensifying coastal storm tracking south of New England caused some of the worst flooding along the eastern Massachusetts coast in over a decade. Salisbury in coastal Essex County was hardest hit, where about 30 homes were surrounded by flood waters. Widespread minor to moderate flooding was reported in coastal communities from Gloucester to Duxbury. The high tide caused flooding in many basements and forced temporary road closures in Hingham, Marshfield, Quincy, and Revere. Morrisey Boulevard in Boston was closed around high tide at noon. In Hull, firefighters used a boat to rescue two residents after their house was inundated by several feet of water. At least two cars were stranded in Cohasset. On Cape Cod, flood waters surrounded several homes in Eastham and Chatham.The storm also brought heavy, wet snow to western Franklin County, where amounts as high as 6 to 8 inches were reported. The weight of the snow brought down tree limbs, causing scattered power outages.

A line of severe thunderstorms moved across much of the Bay State during the afternoon and early evening, producing widespread wind damage. There were numerous reports of downed trees, power lines, and large branches from the Connecticut River Valley to the Worcester Hills, Merrimack Valley, and the eastern Massachusetts coastline from Marblehead to Hingham. Amateur radio operators measured wind gusts to 71 mph in Easthampton and to 59 mph in West Springfield as the storms moved through. In the city of Boston,winds estimated near 60 mph blew down scaffolding on a school building, while in Salem winds of similar magnitude ripped siding off a house.A tornado briefly touched down in West Brookfield at 315 pm, and there were no injuries reported. The tornado had an approximate path width of 75 yards, a path length of about one-half mile, and was only on the ground for about 30 seconds, as determined by a National Weather Service survey of the area. The intensity of the tornado was determined to be an F1 on the Fujita damage scale, which corresponds to wind speeds between 73 and 112 mph. It is likely that winds were closer to the upper region of that range. The tornado formed over the northeast portion of Lake Wickaboag and traveled to the east, dissipating just to the east of the portion of Wickaboag Valley Road that is adjacent to the lake. Microburst damage was evident for about another two miles east of where the tornado circulation ended.Eyewitnesses reported that a curtain of water was drawn from the lake as high as 50 feet into the air, and traveled east. A portion of it hit a house by the lake, causing its roof to fly off and become embedded to a tree across the street. There was also a brief flash as power lines were downed on Wickaboag Valley Road. Although most downed trees were facing southwest to northeast, there was some evidence of trees blown down to the north and northwest near the lake.The same thunderstorm was responsible for another microburst in Spencer. Large trees were uprooted, some of which landed on cars and houses. Wind speeds were estimated to be near 100 mph based upon the damage observed.Another severe thunderstorm produced a microburst in Concord, as determined by a National Weather Service survey, which occurred between 345 and 400 pm. Straight line winds on Monument Street were estimated near 75 mph. Numerous large trees were snapped off and uprooted, which in turn knocked down many electric poles and wires. A couple of large trees were snapped off, and fell on a house on Monument Street. The microburst was approximately one-half mile wide and about one and a half miles long.

Severe thunderstorms moved through parts of central and northeast Massachusetts, with many reports of downed trees, power lines, and large branches from Easthampton to Shrewsbury, Westborough, Weston, and Wayland.The storms also produced frequent lightning, and lightning strikes caused additional damage in Worcester, Middlesex, and Suffolk Counties. In Westborough, lightning ignited a fire in a utility building at National Grid which caused extensive damage. The five-alarm fire spewed black smoke over Route 9, but never threatened the nearby dispatch center which serves more than 1.6 million customers. Around the same time, lightning struck the attic of a house in Winthrop, causing significant damage. Several lightning strikes were also reported from Lowell to Billerica, causing scattered power outages.

A severe thunderstorm produced nickel-sized hail in Petersham. Other thunderstorms with frequent lightning knocked out power to about 50,000 electric customers in the Bay State, primarily in Franklin, Hampshire, and Suffolk Counties. Lightning sparked a fire that destroyed the Boston Tea Party gift shop, resulting in an estimated 1.5 million dollars in damage.

Severe thunderstorms rolled through much of western and central Massachusetts, dropping large hail and downing trees and power lines in Hampden, Hampshire, Worcester, and Middlesex Counties. Hail the size of ping pong balls was reported in South Oxford, while quarter-sized hail fell in South Amherst, Belchertown, Ware, Chester, and Huntington. A spotter in Springfield reported nickel-sized hail, and dime-sized hail was observed in Northampton, Warren, Chester, Brookfield, and West Boylston. Around 6,000 electric customers, mostly in the Connecticut River Valley, lost power during the storms.In Eastern Massachusetts, the storms produced frequent lightning. In Revere, a man out walking his dog was struck and killed by lightning. Lightning struck two homes in Norwood, as well as an antenna on Norwood Town Hall, disrupting fire department communications. Minor damage was reported in all instances. Lightning also struck a utility pole in Canton, causing several homes to lose power. In Randolph, a large section of town was left without power due to lightning strikes.

A major winter storm impacted the Bay State with near blizzard conditions, high winds, and coastal flooding. The slow-moving storm, which tracked south of New England, dumped over two feet of snow across the interior, knocked out power to about 80,000 customers, and shut down businesses and schools for several days. There were also many reports of downed trees and wires during the height of the storm, along with reports of lightning and thunder. Hundreds of flights at Logan International Airport were canceled, as were flights at other nearby airports. In magnitude, it was the worst storm to affect the state since 1992, and a state of emergency was in effect for three days. After the storm, the weight of the heavy wet snow caused several roof collapses throughout the state, most notably at a church in Westford. No injuries were reported. Damage from this storm was estimated to be in the tens of millions of dollars.The highest snowfall totals were reported from the east slopes of the Berkshires across Worcester County and into northeast Massachusetts, where amounts of 15 to 30 inches were common. Greater Boston received between 12 and 22 inches of snow, but Logan International Airport received 9.8 inches from this storm. Amounts in southeast Massachusetts ranged from 2 to 4 inches along the immediate coast to as much as a foot farther inland. Other official totals include 23 inches at the Blue Hills Observatory in Milton, 22 inches at Worcester Airport, and 9.5 inches at the National Weather Service in Taunton.Powerful northeast winds affected much of east coastal and southeast Massachusetts. Speeds of 50 to 60 mph were widely observed and caused damage to trees and power lines, especially on Cape Cod and the islands. Some unofficial gusts reported by spotters include 64 mph in Wareham, 61 mph in Fairhaven, and 60 mph at Nauset Beach in Orleans. At Chatham Municipal Airport, winds gusted to 63 mph.High tides during the storm ran 2 to 3 feet above normal, resulting in widespread coastal flooding along the entire east facing coastline, including Cape Cod and the islands. The strong surf slammed sea walls and flooded beachfront homes and roadways, and damaged a part of the sea wall in Winthrop. In Marblehead, Ocean Avenue and Front Street were flooded, as was Nahant Road in Nahant. In Winthrop, Winthrop Shore Drive, Shirley Avenue, and Moore and Charles Streets were flooded. Flood waters also impacted the Jamaicaway in Boston and Quincy Shore Drive in Quincy. In Hull, flooding affected Gun Rock, Atlantic, and Nantasket Avenues while in Scituate, flooding affected Turner and Jericho Roads as well as 5th, 6th, and 7th Avenues. In its wake, the flooding left behind piles of seaweed, pieces of deck and lawn furniture, and even lobsters and fish.

An unusual June nor'easter brought strong winds, heavy rain, and a brief period of flooding to Massachusetts. Northeast winds averaging 25 to 35 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph, downed tree limbs and power lines in a number of communities in central and northeast Massachusetts, though damage was also reported in Southwick, in Hampden County. About 10,000 electric customers lost power throughout the state, of which 2,500 were in Greater Boston.Rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches were common throughout much of the state, but were more concentrated along the east slopes of the Berkshires, in the Worcester hills, and inside the I-495 belt. Some of the higher amounts reported include 4.95 inches in Southwick, 4.70 inches in Conway, 4.63 inches in Belmont, 4.05 inches in Beverly, 3.44 inches in Milton, and 3.42 inches in Bristol. At Logan International Airport in Boston, the 4.00 inches of rain which fell on June 6 broke the previous record rainfall for the date, which was 2.98 inches set in 1986. Poor drainage flooding closed a section of Morrissey Boulevard in Dorchester, while the northbound side of the Southeast Expressway at East Milton was impassable for a brief time. In Worcester, the high temperature for the day only reached 51 degrees, which broke the previous record for coolest high temperature of 52 degrees set in 1993. The heavy rain caused the Westfield River at Westfield to briefly go into a minor flood. The river crested at 13.05 feet at 830 am EDT, which was just over its flood stage of 13 feet. No damage was reported.

Severe thunderstorms moved through much of the Bay State in advance of a strong cold front, causing widespread damage. The storms began in western Massachusetts during the late afternoon, with numerous reports of downed trees, wires, and large hail in Hampshire and Hampden Counties. Hail as large as golf balls was reported in Granby.Northampton received the brunt of the storm damage, where a brief tornado and microburst caused extensive damage and one injury. The tornado, rated F1 on the Fujita Scale with winds of 73 to 112 mph, touched down very briefly at 5 pm EDT in the higher elevations in Leeds, in the northwest section of Northampton. A few minutes later, the same tornado briefly touched down again near Bridge Road in the Pine Brook Farm portion of Northampton. The initial touchdown was only 15 yards wide at its maximum, about one half mile long, and lasted only one minute. It began near Kennedy Road, just to the west of the southern portion of Roberts Meadow Reservoir. It ended on the east side of the reservoir at Reservoir Road. Convergent tree damage was noted in these areas. The majority of the damage from this severe thunderstorm occurred from a very powerful microburst, with estimated winds between 90 and 105 mph, which affected the section of Northampton around Pine Brook Curve, Emily Lane, and Hatfield Street. Straight line wind damage was observed in this area, with large trees snapped in the middle, and in some cases at their bases. Four homes were declared uninhabitable due to large trees which had fell upon them. Hundreds of trees were downed as well as power lines. Hail, ranging in size from quarter to golf ball, accompanied this storm. Amazingly, only one minor injury occurred. A man was struck by a tree which fell into his kitchen, but was spared by his refrigerator, which acted as a shield according to several accounts.In central and eastern Massachusetts, thunderstorm winds downed trees, branches, and power lines throughout many communities in Worcester, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Plymouth Counties. Dime to nickel size hail also accompanied the storms. At Logan International Airport in Boston, a wind gust to 62 mph was reported.About 15,000 electric customers lost power during the storms as they moved through Massachusetts.
