Burlington Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
A tree was blown over onto power lines.
An EF2 tornado with 120 mph peak winds touched down doing damage to trees and the roof of a house. As it moved east it, strengthened causing more tree damage and siding damage to a house. The tornado then reached peak strength, destroying a farm outbuilding, throwing two pieces of farming equipment 40 yards, and then moving a pickup truck through the air approx 20 yards. A house at this location suffered major damage, as it was moved off it's foundation. All the windows were blown out, a bolted down garage was destroyed and lofted. Three power poles were also snapped at this location. The tornado then turned northeast, destroying numerous trees. Once it came down the bluff, it hit power lines causing them to lean over. The tornado ended shortly after this.
A second EF2 tornado with winds to 120 mph, touched down just east of the first one initially damaging trees and the roof of a mobile home. As it moved east, it strengthened as it went down the bluff. Here it destroyed a pig farm building along with taking down a wooden high power transmission line. One other house along with numerous trees sustained damage from the tornado.

Episodes
A strong and quick moving cold front made its way through the Midwest. The environment ahead of the cold front was unseasonably warm, with temperatures in the upper 60s and readings in the 40s not far behind the front. This led to strong baroclinicity along the front, and subsequent convection with just the right amount of instability. This is considered a high shear low CAPE (HSLC) event, where organized severe thunderstorms are favored in this environment. Potential hazards are damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes. Six tornadoes were confirmed and several wind reports were received (ranging between 50-60 mph, with a few gusts over 60 mph). Damage reports ranged from structural damage to tree damage. Many residents were left without power in parts of northwestern IL, leading to some schools canceling classes on the 11th. Besides the strong winds, a few severe hail reports were received.||In addition, heavy rain occurred with some of the stronger storms, with rainfall totals over an inch. For how dry it has been, flash flooding was not much of a concern. While the environment was very moist and favorable for heavy rainfall, the fast storm motions led to little accumulation through much of our forecast area.
Severe thunderstorms moved southward across eastern Iowa during the morning hours on June 28, 2019. These thunderstorms produced damaging winds between 50 to 80 MPH that downed trees, limbs, power lines and destroyed barns and a silo.
Severe thunderstorms tracked across portions of eastern Iowa, northeast Missouri, and northwest Illinois Saturday evening, June 15, bringing damaging winds, heavy downpours, frequent lightning, large hail, and a tornado. Many areas saw winds between 30-50 mph during the evening hours, with higher winds of 60-70 mph reported in Iowa and Benton counties in Iowa. ||The storms produced three tornadoes in Des Moines County (west of Mediapolis, IA and south of Oakville, IA) between 7:50 pm and 8:30 pm.||Two tornadoes south of Oakville were rated EF2 and downed numerous trees, severely damaged a house displacing it off its foundation, destroyed outbuildings, and downed power poles.||The tornado west of Mediapolis remained in an open field with no observable damage to assign a rating.||Another tornado occurred just northeast of Keithsburg in Mercer County Illinois. This tornado was rated EF1.
A 30 knot low level jet impinging on a slow moving warm front triggered scattered thunderstorms during the early morning hours of July 1, 2012. The storms were confined to extreme northeast Missouri, southeast Iowa and western Illinois. A few of the storms produced 60 mph winds which knocked down trees and limbs. Law enforcement reported a tree fell on a house along with power lines down near Leando, Iowa in Van Buren county. There were also a couple of quarter size hail reports from trained spotters. Some of the storms dumped heavy rainfall of over 3 inches in Van Buren county in southeast Iowa.
A disturbance moving eastward out of Kansas brought strong to severe thunderstorms to most of Eastern Iowa, Northeast Missouri, and Northwest Illinois during the afternoon and early evening hours of June 16. Thunderstorm winds brought down trees and power and phone lines in Jefferson County with widespread heavy rain south of Interstate 80. High temperatures ranged from 81 degrees at Independence, IA to 92 degrees in Macomb, IL.
