Power Outage in Canton, IL

Two powerlines were blown down and one power pole was leaning.

A tornado touched down about 1 mile south of Ipava at 7:11 PM CDT. It tracked east-northeastward causing EF-1 level damage near the intersection of East Square Road and North Summum Road where several farm buildings and a home sustained damage. The tornado then curved northeastward and crossed the Spoon River Bottoms. Damage began increasing about 1.5 miles west of Lewistown near County Highway 14 where several houses and outbuildings were damaged along North Milton Road. The tornado increased in intensity, producing EF-3 damage just northwest of Lewistown where it crumpled a metal high tension transmission tower. It crossed State Highway 97 just northwest of the intersection with State Highway 100 and damaged numerous homes and farm buildings along State Highway 100 between North Grain Bin Highway and East Epworth Spring Road. The tornado blew down several power poles from this point northeastward to the southwest edge of Bryant. Much of the tornado damage within the town of Bryant was west of State Highway 100 between Ash Street and Elm Street...with damage east of State Highway 100 being caused by rear-flank downdraft winds of 70 to 100 mph. EF-3 tornado damage was observed about 1 mile southwest of Bryant near the intersection of State Highway 100 and North Wright Road where several houses were demolished. EF-3 damage was also noted 1 mile northeast of Bryant near the west end of East Hooty Road. Four injuries occurred in the Bryant area. The tornado continued northeastward, damaging trees and power lines west of Saint David and a home along West Hickory Street southwest of Canton. It dissipated about 2 miles southwest of Canton at 7:38 PM CDT.

Numerous trees and power lines were blown down along Route 9 west of Canton.

Numerous observers measured between 0.30 and 0.50 ice across Fulton County. The heavy ice accumulation snapped many tree branches, caused scattered power outages, and created slick and hazardous travel conditions.

Westerly winds increased to around 40mph with gusts of 50-60mph. A few large tree limbs and power lines were blown down.

A tornado touched down in a wooded area of northeastern Fulton County 4.9 miles east-northeast of Canton at 8:22 PM CDT. The tornado tracked southeastward, doing damage to numerous trees as it crossed County Highway 27 near North Orion School Road. It did minor roof damage to several homes and a church, and downed additional trees and power poles before dissipating in an open field 3.8 miles north of Banner at 8:27 PM CDT.

This tornado crossed from Schuyler County into far southern Fulton County about 6.9 miles southeast of Astoria at 3:55 PM CST. The tornado progressed northeastward doing extensive tree damage as it nearly paralleled Highway 100. Additional tree damage and minor roof damage occurred near the intersection of Highway 100 and US-136. The tornado then tracked nearly due northward through rural areas doing tree damage before hitting some homes along North Waterford Road, producing mainly roof and siding damage, along with snapping and uprooting many trees. The hardest hit areas from this tornado were along East County Highway 9 southeast of Lewistown, where more extensive home damage occurred, along with very large trees getting snapped or uprooted. A winery suffered extensive damage to several buildings and numerous trees and power lines were downed. The tornado dissipated in a field east of East Township Line Road and County Highway 9 about 2.3 miles southeast of Lewistown at 4:18 PM CST.

Numerous weather observers reported 5 to 10 inches of snow across the northwest half of Fulton County...with 2 to 5 inches southeastward to the Illinois River. Winds gusting 45-50mph created whiteout conditions and produced snow drifts of 3-5 feet deep. Scattered power outages occurred and several motorists were stranded on rural roads due to the snow.

Ten power poles were snapped at the base near the Correctional Center.

Weather observers across much of Fulton County reported ice accumulations of less than 0.25. The greatest ice accumulations of around 0.25 occurred in the far northern part of the county, including the city of Canton where several trees fell onto power lines.

A corridor of enhanced wind damage occurred along Highway 24 in Fulton County from southwest of Fairview to just south of Farmington. A National Weather Service Storm Survey found several machine sheds, garages, and outbuildings damaged or destroyed along this path. In addition, numerous trees and powerlines were blown down as well. The winds were likely caused by the rear-flank downdraft from a supercell thunderstorm just ahead of the main line of storms.

Several power lines were blown down in Canton. A large tree limb broke off and fell onto a house, causing minor damage.

Numerous trees and power lines were blown down. A metal shed was damaged and awnings were ripped off a pavillion.

Shingles were blown off a roof and several tree limbs fell into power lines.

Weather observers across Fulton County reported between one half and three quarters of an inch of ice, including one half inch amounts in both Canton and Avon. In addition, widespread power outages and numerous traffic accidents were reported across the county.

Widespread wind damage was reported in the town of Canton. Extensive tree damage was noted in the Sycamore Terrace neighborhood, where several 2 to 10 foot diameter trees were broken and/or uprooted. Numerous trees and powerlines were blown down throughout Canton as well. The wind also caused the transmission tower at WBYS radio to fall to the ground.

Numerous trees and power lines were blown down between Ipava and Canton. Other impacted communities included Cuba, Fiatt and Smithfield.

Large hail to golf ball size fell for twenty minutes in Canton. Strong winds also blew a few power lines down.

Severe storms moved across Fulton county, blowing down numerous trees, tree limbs and power lines. Also, the roof of a silo was blown off west of Farmington and the walls of a new gymnasium in the process of being built in Farmington were blown down. No injuries were reported.

Thunderstorm winds blew down numerous trees, tree limbs and power lines countywide. The hardest hit areas were around Smithfield, Cuba and Lewistown. One home sustained moderate roof damage due to a fallen tree. No injuries were reported.

Thunderstorm winds blew over a semi on Route 24 three miles south of Duncan Mills. Also, in Lewistown numerous large tree limbs were blown down and a power pole was snapped off.

Fulton County ESDA officials reported power lines down due to heavy accumulations of ice in northern parts of the county.
