Castine Power Outages Caused by Weather

Events

September 26, 2007 - Thunderstorm Wind

A microburst in the Castine area produced estimated wind gusts of 85 to 95 mph. Numerous large trees across the town were uprooted or snapped by the winds...with significant damage also reported to power lines and utility poles. Several structures and five vehicles were damaged when trees were toppled on to them. Many roads across the town were blocked for a time immediately after the storm due to the large number of fallen trees and power lines. On the campus of the Maine Maritime Academy several buildings sustained roof damage and broken windows...with damage also reported to bleachers at the football field. It was estimated that storm clean up across town could take several weeks.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
